I've watched this movie loads of times since the 80s, and have watched countless reactions. And I still have tears coming out when Del says Marie's been dead for 8 years. John Candy could make you laugh out loud and can break your heart.
Still one of the funniest road trip buddy comedy films ever made
This and Midnight Run. Both amazing.
Yeah, I never knew how good this movie was until I actually saw it not too long ago… classic movie
I saw a interview with Steve Martin. Ever since John Candy died, Martin says he has trouble watching the ending of the movie.
The airport cussing scene is just.... Incredible
And the only reason it was rated *R.*
Not many realize it, but John Candy was one of the great actors. He can make you laugh or cry, on demand.
Yep, I can’t believe that in 2024 he’ll have already been gone for 30 years 😳😱
I think most people realise how great he was. One of the most beloved actors of his generation.
@@nebularain3338 yes, I feel sorry for the people who weren’t born yet when he was still alive… he was a National treasure.
I was 7 when he passed away and at that age, I didn’t know alot about death yet.
I thought that we couldn’t enjoy his movies anymore now that he was gone 😳🫤
@@nsasupporter7557 Same here. About the same age when he passed. First time I realized it was possible for actors to die mid-production and wondered how they can complete a film without them being there.
@@nsasupporter7557 He is missed.
Lovely reaction as always Dear!
John Candy was one of those rare amazing actors that didn't star in a single bad movie and was taken from us far too soon.
You are going to love "The Great Outdoors" (1988).
Armed and Dangerous is a classic also! John Candy in Drag LMFAO
I don't think she's your "Dear".
@@jkhoover not telling you how to behave, but you should be aware that it’s common in some countries to refer to people you aren’t familiar with, male or female, as “dear”, I think out of politeness or friendliness. Similarly some people will refer to strangers as “auntie” or “uncle” as a term of endearment. Or maybe she knows this commenter personally?
@@jkhoover No. I don't know her personally. Just a greeting and form of kindness. I wish you that you are well.
@@jkhooverRelax, it's an expression.
Another great Steve Martin comedy/romance is "Roxanne," his take on Cyrano de Bergerac.
We all love ❤️ & miss you 😢 John Candy
one of the best movie lines "your going the wrong way!, pff,how do they know where we are going"
Planes, Trains, and Automobiles is probably the gold standard of comedies with unexpected emotions. Not many movies have ever been made that can make you cry from laughter and sadness
Hi Madison,
With your writing and story-telling background, I'm so glad you are watching a movie with great writing. As I'm sure you are aware, you can learn a lot from great writers and great writing. You can also learn to recognize bad writing as well, I imagine
I love Planes, Trains and Automobiles. I originally saw this in the theater. "Those aren't pillows!" was the line that got the biggest laugh.
that line's is just about the funniest thing EVER!
This film checks off so many boxes: comedy movie, holiday movie, buddy movie, road picture, feel good movie, even disaster movie! Loved your reaction, as usual...happy Turkey day!!
Yeah, I can’t believe that in 2024 he’ll have already been gone for 30 years 😱😳
The final scene has more poignancy when you know that this was scripted and filmed with Neals wife suspecting that he was having an affair and that all the escapades were just excuses to not come home whilst he saw the other woman. It's only when she says "Hello Mr Griffiths" that she realises it was all true and she had nothing to fear after all. Her performance always felt a bit 'odd' to me until you know that context. Why they decided in editing to cut the subplot I'll never know as I think there's enough jollity to be able to withstand a little pathos and I think the ending would be even better with it still intact.
because that was an unnecessary and distracting subplot, and femayle paranoia like that is not worth a moment of screen time.
Yes, the lost cut of the film definitely changes the marriage dynamic from the theatrical release (just missing each other) to something more nefarious
My guess would be for time. Studios used to be so weird about running time, great things got cut all the time to meet theater scheduling.
The scene where JC says " I like me, my wife likes me". Solidifys him as a very very good actor.
The hurt on his face while he's being ranted at tears my heart out, every time. 😫
🤠 One of my top 5 comedies of all time! 👍
great reaction, Madison...... Happy Thanksgiving......
the guy who robbed them was the Pizza delivery guy who they didn't tip
In case you didn't see it, there is an after credits scene.
I've loved this movie ever since I first saw it many years ago.
My favorite Steve Martin film is "LA Story".
Another super fun performance from Steve Martin is My Blue Heaven. Also stars the always wonderful Rick Moranis. It's a comedy based on Henry Hill's (the lead character in Goodfellas) time in witness relocation. It basically picks up where Goodfellas leaves off, but is a comedy instead of a drama. Came out literally like a month or two before Goodfellas. It's great fun.
Watch Summer Rental (1985). Another great John Candy comedy.
absolutely!
"at the very least, the absolute minimum, you've got a woman you love to grow old with"
The way Del nods just guts you when you watch this movie again.
"You shared a motel room with a complete stranger? Are you crazy?"
"Not yet. But I'm getting there."
Happy Thanksgiving! 😎 🦃
Fun Fact: After the credits, Neal's boss is still at his desk analyzing the ads, his Thanksgiving dinner sitting on his desk.
New House Fact: Neal's (Steve Martin) house was also a set built from scratch, consisting of seven rooms, and taking five months to complete. It ended up costing $100,000, which angered Paramount executives, and caused turmoil on the set.
Crazy Rant Fact: The Marathon Car Rental scene is exactly one minute long from the time Steve Martin starts his tirade to the time the attendant ends the scene. In that sixty seconds, the "F" word is used nineteen times. The film would've easily been rated PG or PG-13 by the MPAA, if it weren't for this one scene.
John candy's best role
You weren’t wrong. 🥺
Great reaction again and have a happy thanksgiving!!
It's my favorite holiday movie. It's all about the journey, not the destination.
Have you seen "Dead men don't wear plaid" from 1982 by Carl Reiner? With Steve Martin as a PI and Rachel Ward as his client plus a huge cast of Hollywood stars from the 1940's and 1950's like Ingrid Bergman and many others.
Its a crime comedy and really fun to watch. If you haven't seen it you really should put it on your list for future reactions.
edit: shortened the comment a bit
Yeah, in the preview for it they said, from the guys who brought you the Jerk. Sorry about that. That always cracked me up
Have you ever heard the expression "Less is more"?
@@jkhoover yeah, more or less
@@jkhoover OK, I know, you are right. Thats the typical "when-you-are-too-enthuiastic-about-something-fuck-up". I am disappointed about myself now, should have known better. *sigh*😞
edit:Just modified the original comment. Lets hope Madison hasn't read it yet and my "Fuck-up-moment" has not done any damage already.
You would like John Candy in Uncle Buck (1989).
Armed and Dangerous with Eugene Levy
Great reaction Madison. I hope you'll react to "It's a Wonderful Life" (original B&W version) during the Holiday season...wishing you and yours a great Thanksgiving!🦃🦃🦃🦃🦃🦃🍗🍗🍗🍗🍗🍗
Cool reaction as always Madison, you take care and have a great weekend sweetie 🥰🥰
I always wondered why Candy's character was trying so hard to get to Chicago. No family, no friends, nowhere to go when he got there.
I lent this to a guy who never seen it, and he loved it so he bought it. He found the, these aren't pillows special edition. Roxanne is one I think you'd like. Peace
I was an unspottable extra in this movie. I was in the bus station scene where John Candy was selling the curtain rings to the girls as earrings, but I've never been able to actually see myself in the background. I understand that a LOT of the footage was cut for the movie, so that might explain it. It's a shame because it's a great movie, and I'd love to say. "There I am!"
Another great thanksgiving movie is Home for the Holidays. Always love your reactions.
You notice at the airport when they first meet , John Candy is reading some story on Canada . And he's Canadian .
I think I have seen this movie like 14 times... Love it!🤩
I was on a train that broke down with a friend. We were like, a 5 min walk from the station, but they wouldn't let us off, as much as we begged. Took several hours to get it running again.
😱
god bless john candy.. a comic genius....
Unfortunately, there was over an hour of this movie that was cut for the theatrical release. What was cut has been, mostly, lost. The missing scenes elucidate a lot on some scenes that seem confusing. For instance, the pizza guy getting stiffed for a tip comes back to rob the guys. Also, missing scenes where Neal's wife thinks he is cheating on her and Del isn't real.
John Hughes was really good at movies that are very funny, but with a serious heart to them. Him and Chris Columbus.
Now you should watch a very underrated Thanksgiving movie, Dutch, starring Ed O'Neill.
A great reaction, Madison. It's a magical film, full of great humour and pathos.
john hughes was a master he also made frris buelers day off, pretty in pink, breakfast club and loads of others also another great 80's comedy is the rockumentary this is spinal tap its really funny
SPLASH - Tom Hanks, Daryl Hannah, John Candy, and Eugene Levy
A perfect movie
My favorite Steve Martin movie is Roxanne, for John Candy its The Great Outdoors.
Or Uncle Buck
This was a favorite of my parents and they'd catch it every time it would be broadcast on the cable service.
Another great John Candy movie is Uncle Buck (1989)
If you already seen this one, I'd recommend Dutch (1991) a mix, in a way, between Uncle buck and Plantes, train and Automobile, altho John Candy isn't in this one, John Hugues is also the writer.
A comedy and a tear jerker all in one
This is the best road trip buddy comedy ever! But Silver Streak, with Gene Wilder, and Midnight Run, with Robert DeNiro, are good too! And of course 4 Latas. And Finnish Blood Swedish Heart, that one is a documentary about a real father and a real son taking a real road trip, excellent! Lots of good music, too!
One of my favorite comedies....John Candy was gold and with Martin, comic perfection...side note: I think the airport scene holds a cinematic record for most f-bombs (whether in a monalogue, or scene, or some other category)..
That was great! Thank you!
Miss john candy. He was a one off.
I Watch This Movie Every Thanksgiving, That's My Tradition, Which Is Tomorrow,As Always Loving Seeing Your Reactions To All These Great Movie's Sweetheart, Happy Thanksgiving Everyone & R.I.P To John Hughes & John Candy, Still Miss You, Guy's
I absolutely love this movie. Since i was a young teen
...🎉🎉😂😂 Genuinely funny.
Im convinced 5his is ehere they got the inspiration behind Tommy boy
" Gobble Gobble. "
Nice catch!
Another outstanding coming home for the holidays comedy is "DUTCH" 1991 with Ed O'Neill ❤ 👍 🎥 Very fun and touching
The perfect Thanksgiving film and one of my fave films. DynamicDuo teaming of Martin & Candy with John Hughes' mix of heart & hilarity is a perfect comedy. So glad you saw this and enjoyed it too - Have a Happy Thanksgiving Madison! ;D xoxo
You were right
Hello Madison K. Thames, Steve Martin used to be a support player on the Ray Stevens television program.
That rental car scene with all the F-bombs had me laughing till I couldn't breath the first time I saw this movie. 🤣
I love the Spencer Tracey Father of the Bride!!!!!! Sooooo good!!!!!!
I saw the movie at the theatre originally. I have watched other reactors respond to this movie. But I enjoyed your reaction very much.
My fav comedy ever
Great film, great reaction, great channel 👏🏻👏🏻👍🇬🇧
If you haven't seen it yet, I can def. recommend Uncle Buck. Another great John Candy movie around humor and family.
I think he dropped more f-bombs in that one scene than all his other movies combined, lol
Happy Thanksgiving Madison!!! 🍗
Fun fact: There are people who live on trains, just traveling all over because the train tickets are cheaper than rent.
43 no age to die, wonderful man.
Great reaction! I miss John Candy so much. He and Steve Martin made a great pair. Happy Thanksgiving!
It's _The Odd Couple_ (1968) road movie.
You cut so much more out than your normal reactions. The infamous minute long 18 F-Bombs at the rental car desk is why this movie is rated R
Great reaction!!!!!! I think Dell’s moving in!!!!!😅😅😂😂😂
Good review, just too short, many funny parts were left out.Great holiday movie.
You should really watch Steve’s earlier stand up , he was hilarious
Definitely check out COOL RUNNINGS, also starring John Candy, if you haven't already.
I miss John Candy.
I think John Candy would have played an amazing live action Peter Griffin.
Those aren't pillows!!! 🤣🤣🤣
This is THE Thanksgiving movie.
they cut about an hour from this movie, it was MUCH darker
ARRIVING at an airport 45 minutes before flying? nice.
Well, there's no "horses" in the title. Great reaction, Madison. I'm beginning to wonder if you've ever really been surprised by a movie or if you catch all the twists before they happen. The only time I've seen you surprised was with The Sixth Sense.
Roger Ebert watched this every year. ☺☺
Please Consider this Movie
Some Kind of Wonderful
It's a 1987 American romantic drama film starring Eric Stoltz, Mary Stuart Masterson, and Lea Thompson. It is one of several successful teen dramas written by John Hughes in the 1980s.
imo: John Hughes best film
You should watch Dirty, Rotten, Scoundrels if you liked that
If you're a Steve Martin fan, and you haven't, yet, watch ROXANNE. Martin comedy and romance at it's best.
Another good Steve Martin comedy is Parenthood.
Great reaction. Can I recommended a very highly UNDERATED movie? PRIMAL FEAR. It was Edward Norton's breakout film.
It's a fun movie. WDE
Way to put the pieces together.
How do you edit out their hug?
Just to torture people who don't subscribe to the channel. 😆
Steve Martin (and many more) in Parenthood if you’ve never seen it.
You should watch Uncle Buck.
have you seen The Jerk yet?
I’m not into Steve Martin honestly, but he’s still a legend regardless and this is a classic movie. “Bringing Down the House” was also a really funny Steve Martin movie
🥲👍
I’m not into Steve Martin… but he’s still a legend regardless and this is a classic movie
I'm also still a million bucks short of being a millionaire.
Love that I am aswell 😂
You’re reaction vids are great. You’re such a softy.
