  • Colorado prisons are the first in the nation to give inmates computer tablets. Officials believe the prisons will be safer with less bullying around wall phones and more opportunities for inmates to occupy their time. An inmate and warden at Four Mile Correctional Center talk about the program.

Great idea. The good outweighs the bad. There will be less fights and inmates preying on other inmates because few will want to risk losing their tablet. While this is great, the real reform needs to be replicating outside living while inside. The punishment is removal from society. Our current incarceration methods keep inmates idol. They have virtually no responsibility while inside. After 10 or 50 years the basic skills of living are dormant. This will lead many to become institutionalized. When they do get out there is going to be a mental component that wants to return to the familiar. The same way a victim will gravitate back to their abuser.

I think it's an excellent idea. Yes, these are bad people (even though it's only min security) but even max security inmates deserve some form of modern recreation. Mostly because it's humane and reduces violence. If all they have to do to kill time is workout and beat each other up, how can you expect them to rehabilitate or become better people? With these devices, inmates can pass do a multitude of things and it genuinely would not cost the prison a lot of money to implement. Yes, I believe in higher security facilities where one is locked in their cell for multiple days at a time, it should be mandatory to have some form of tablet with books, music, and educational tv and non-violent movies. Locking people in cells for extended period of isolation without any form of connection to society is cruel. I know some of these people were not merciful to their victims, I get that. BUT we are supposed to be BETTER. We are supposed to set the example. We can't do that if we are treating just like they would treat others. It's hard to grasp, I understand. But prison doesn't work right now. We need to stop making criminals WORSE criminals...

Based on the comments, nobody has seen 60 days. They charge to use those tablets. 25 cents to send a message when they pay 19 cents an hour? Also, not every inmate can afford these, the guys doing long prison times that dont have any money typically will threaten those that do have the money to pay for these. Sad but it makes sense to me, it is prison, these guys dont play by the rules and respect others things.
