    As A Spaniard from that part of Spain I'm embarrassed by what that "salvage" crew did. Maybe they had given-up at that point, but I'm sure there were ways to get that boat off the beach without destroying it in the process. I'm a commercial fisherman on the BC coast of Canada, with 30 years experience. As a boater it's disgusting that 20 boaters stood by and watched a boat drift onto the beach and no one helped.

    Great follow up. When people ask about the dangers of sailing, especially mothers, they always ask about storms at sea. This story is a great lesson is that the most dangerous part of sailing when you are close to land. Glad to see that things are working out for Sea Dogs and he hasn't given up on a life at sea. I have been looking at new anchors and I am definitely going up one size. And my snubber design is going to get a double look. Happy New Year!!

      Well said Tim. We strongly believe in oversize ground tackle. We upped our anchor to a 60lbs Manson Supreme, oversized shackles and the largest chain our windlass could handle. And we upgraded our snubber to include a bridal from Mantus. Love to hear more about your snubber design. Have a great 2022. 🤙

    Indeed a very sad situation... all for the want of rigging a snubber. It was mentioned that the whole amount of anchor chain ran out of the chain locker which then broke the 'bitter end' of the chain resulting in it all on the bottom. However, in the recovery video, there is chain going up to the bow? Had that been previously recovered?

    Good episode, but, for my own education, I wish you had gone into more detail about how forgetting the snubber caused the accident. Did he leave it on a windlass and the gypsy let go? Did he wrap the chain around a cleat and the cleat ripped off because there was no spring that a snubber would have provided? Maybe you already went into the details about this, but I don't remember it from the the grounding episode.

  • @kisero2222
    @kisero2222 Před 2 lety +1

    i don't understand, if he forgot the snubber (shit happens, im sorry for him) the chain load went to the winch and the winch got detached from the deck? if that is the case in 13:37 you can see the winch there in place. Something from his explanation is missing, the problem was somewhere else, the snubber alone can not be the reason. Btw - in Spain is completely ilegal not to have at least third party insurance (7:21) on a registered sailboat sailing Spanish waters...is a miracle he is not in jail or paying damages out of his pocket.

    Crazy things happen. One night while asleep my anchore started to pull itself up. It was a very confusing moment. From deep sleep to whos on my boat.
    Long story short the remote at the helm shorted out and that was what it did. Pulled the anchore up. Immagine had i been ashore. I was in remote indonesia
    I dont have a remote anymore.

      Cheers for watching. Happy New Years.

    @rickcreel3657 Před 2 lety

    I wonder how bad the seas were the first day of the grounding. Monohulls would be more difficult rescue, but catamarans would be easier with my theory. The boilermakers construct a large tank with a 70ton top inside laying on the bottom. They take 3 fans, or blowers, and lift the top 50 to 60 feet in the air, and weld the top to the sides like a blow up dome. 3 or 4 airbags the length of a cat's bridge deck would lift a boat providing the bags were 6feet diameter. A leaf blower would probably work. Check with a fire department. because they are trained to do this.

  • @SpiralDiving
    @SpiralDiving Před 2 lety +1

    I'm puzzled -you say the chain ran out but the chain is still on the bow roller at 8:58 and you can see the chain out at the start of the vid 0:40? Then later the anchor is back on the fairlead? It looks more like she dragged... The salvage would have been very tricky with the way she was lying as she really needed too be heeled toward the beach before pulling to bow towards the sea. That said, still, a very sad loss and a strong warning about leaving a boat at anchor on a lee shore with no-one to keep and eye on her.

    • @SailingZephyr
      @SailingZephyr  Před 2 lety +1

      It was a missed bit of info I should have covered in the video. But we managed to recover the anchor and chain and reattach whilst it was on the reef. Then the first rescue crew tried using it in various ways.

  • @johnhayford5946
    @johnhayford5946 Před 2 lety +2

    Lack of details on what failed. It's fairly common not to use a snubber, so did the winch brake fail, or did it come loose from it's mounting, was the bitter end fixed etc ? Personally I normally use a snubber but back when I first started I did not bother, and I see many boats no bothering. So by itself no snubber is not the only failure. By coincidence when we were in Alienate a Cat came in for repair after it's winch had been ripped from the mountings as they did not bother deploying their harness, fortunately the chain was fixed on with rope so they did not drift off.

    • @SailingZephyr
      @SailingZephyr  Před 2 lety

      Have you watched the first video on the incident? We cover a lot of what your asking about. But short answer, no snubber, big 2 ft ferry waves and the clutch wasn’t tight enough on the gypsy. Waves worked it lose and spilled all the chain, snapped the safety line in the chain locker, 20 boats either side of him didn’t assist a drifting sailboat and it dragged onto the reef.

    • @timhardman4764
      @timhardman4764 Před 2 lety

      It is my understanding in the USA, you are typically automatically disqualified from Sailboat Insurance for any one of these issues much less all of them together. No recent and thorough Survey showing the boat in excellent condition, Boat older than 20 yrs, no Captains License/Certificate and little documented sailing experience, being a Solo sailor, Crossing Oceans or Circumnavigation. If you look long and hard enough you can probably insure anything but the price will be unaffordable if all the criteria above are in play. If you are not wealthy and your are a solo sailor with little experience but have a Capitan's Lic. you'll have to buy something you can afford to lose meaning (for me, and some of you) ending up with a "all-in" $50K vessel, 20+ years old that has 20+ yr. old rigging and sails, electronics package, wiring, motor, water and gas tanks etc... Make all those upgrades plus the misc. stuff and you are now all in somewhere between $80K and $100K to have a small, safe, comfortable and reliable boat and still no insurance and now a potential $100K loss that severely damages your financial health if retired with no future earnings potential. For me the solo status has always been the biggest obstacle followed closely by the financial risk if unable to get affordable insurance. A solo sailor as evidenced in this video is an exhausted sailor which is no fun and leads to mistakes that can sink your boat and maybe take your life. Any solo, full day or overnight passage has to be exhausting and stressful knowing everything is on the line if you have miscalculated or just get unlucky. I'm glad this guy has a decade to recover financially and try again. Sailing Zephyr, if you read this, perhaps an episode on this particular topic is in order (getting insurance in general) and again with all the variables I listed.

    What has a snubber got to do with it ????????? That was not the cause of this or anything ! Been at sea for 50 years and never ever used one !

    • @SailingZephyr
      @SailingZephyr  Před 2 lety +1

      Had a snubber been used, the tension and loads being applied to the chain from the ferry waves would have been on the cleat the snubber attaches too. However, these forces were all directed at the windlass, the clutch knob loosened and failed, pouring all the chain overboard. I would definitely recommend a snubber. It provides a secondary protection point, takes away shock loads being applied to your windlass, and also provides stretch which reduces stress on other components such as your bow roller. Your cleats are far stronger and designed to absorb high loads. You would never tow a boat into port via its windlass...always by the cleats. It's far cheaper to replace a $50 snubber than a $2000 windlass and I'm sure you'll agree allows for a more relaxing sleep at anchor when you know you have a secondary level of protection.

    Boats, cars and aircraft fail see the Bearfoot doctors experience where their Leopard cat went up in flames and burnt up another whilst tied up at a warf in a marina .
    The Insurance companies are notorious for their evasiveness when it comes to paying out and acts of nature ..
    There are millions of local fishermen, native people and local traders who rely on boats for their lives and food.
    They have no insurance or protection an no options.
    It's Ironic the whole insurance business was largely founded on the work of Lloyds of London .. and the Maritime trade.
    The time has come perhapse for a affordable third party.. guarentee form of insurance for light vessels that are live aboards.
    Simple fact is beyond territorial waters it remains the open sea... all laws and customs subject to its constant ever changing nature.
    Salvaging grounded vessels would be a great deal easier and more successful if air lift bag jacks and inflatable rollers were more widely available.

      He was more referring to how expensive the boat yard was and because of the difficulty in getting qualified people to work there as it's only a small island out of the way...it's crazy expensive. And all in really pricy Euros. But totally agree, there is some very expensive places in the US.

      Appreciate the feedback Ed. Apologies you didn’t enjoy the episode. If you watch our earlier episode 28, it covers the original incident. Cheerd

    What no anchor drag app on his phone? The boat could of sent him a message to say, Come save my dragging ass! It's sad to see a nice boat killed like that..
