    Rest in Peace Franco 🙏

Nothing has ever brought the city of Pittsburgh together more than the Steelers of the 70’s. Complete strangers could be like brothers when rooting for the Steelers and Franco was the player/person the city loved the most. And he has always treated Pittsburgh and Pittsburghers with love and respect. He was an amazing man.

Growing up a Bengals fan, hate and respect were synonymous. I hated those "Steel Curtain" Pittsburgh teams, because they were so damn great, but I respected them even more, and Franco is/was a part of the respect I have/had.
He seemed to be such a humbled, nice person as well. I was in tears when I heard the news that he had passed away, especially before this upcoming weekend when he was to be honored.
He was one of my late mother's favorite players, and that adds to the sadness of this all. R.I.P. Mr Franco Harris, you are/were truly a legendary man/player, Godspeed sir...🙏🏼...

I was a kid in the 70's and I will go to my grave believing that the old AFC Central division of the Steelers, Browns, Bengals and Oilers were the toughest division of that decade. Before the Steelers could take on the likes of the Raiders and Dolphins on the road to the Super Bowl, they have to play their other division rivals twice each during the regular season.

@@davester1970 I totally agree. Go back and look @ the AFC Central's standings through out the 70's, and you'll see that it was no cakewalk for Pittsburgh during that time.
They earned the right to play in all of those playoff games they participated in, and playing the other three teams twice got them prepared for playoff battles.
That division was brutal then, and I'll cherish memories from that period of time for the rest of my days here on 🌏...

I don't know if I can truly put into words what Franco Harris meant to me, but I'll try. My dad, was born and raised in Pennsylvania coal mining country. He grew up dirt poor, but through hard work and perseverance, he got his college degree and became an Air Force officer. He was a Steelers fan, even when they were one of the worst teams in the NFL. We moved around a lot when I was growing up and I hadn't formed an attachment yet to any particular team. Fast forward to December 23, 1972, I'm 11 years old watching the Steelers/Raiders game on TV with my dad, who wouldn't give up cheering for his team even when it looked like the game was over. Then the Immaculate Reception happens! I swear to God, I don't think I ever saw my father so joyful as he was on that day. We hugged and jumped and danced around the living room. It was one of those amazing father/son bonding moments I'll never forget. That was it. I was hooked and in an instant became a lifetime Steelers fan. In the 1970's the Steelers were the quintessential team of the working class. Rocky Bleier was a Vietnam veteran and Franco Harris was the son of a WW II veteran, which really meant something to our military family. Franco also transcended race. We still have quite a ways to go in this country in terms of accepting people for who they are, but in the early 1970's my impression was that America was combatting worse racism than it does today. Although he was of mixed-race heritage, Franco appealed to, was loved by, and perhaps maybe even identified with, every ethnicity, every color every person. He was a humble gentleman on and off the field. Fifty years after I saw that playoff game with my dad, it still seems like it happened just yesterday, and I'm still a Steelers fan. Always will be.

I was born and raised in a small town near to Pittsburgh. When Franco passed away - a LOT of my friends from home posted Facebook photos they took with Franco - random meetings from over the years - from a sidewalk in Pittsburgh, a shopping mall, a restaurant, Penn State games, you name it.
It got me thinking about ALL the extra time he took for fans over the years. He must have been stopped and asked to snap photos a dozen times a day - or more. Yet he took the time with many, many fans - with patience, class, and in good cheer. That alone is quite a thing.

I grew up in the in Houston during the 70's. As a huge Houston Oilers' fan I despised the Steelers (for good reason). Those were always great games but they just got the best of us in the playoffs. I couldn't stand any of their players. As I grew older though I learned to respect them as a great team as well as their players. By chance somehow France spoke to my high school class (in Houston) in the 80's. I had a chance to meet him. What a gentleman. He was a hall of fame player but a very humble person. I learned that he and his team respected the heck out of my Oilers during those years. Football and the world lost a great human. Rest easy Franco.
