The Real Difference Between Nikon/Nikkor 50mm 1.8 d and g Lenses.
Nikon 50mm f1.8 G and D have always confused a lot of people when they are on the market for buying one of these Nikon 50mm f/1.8 lenses. Here in this video i am trying to eliminate this confusion once and for all.
See the real differences between Nikon 50mm f1.8g and f1.8d lens in this video. Simply speaking, Nikon D lenses are always manual and G lenses come with an Auto focusing motor in it.

In about 2 minutes you have told me what I have not been able to find out on other websites. Thank you very much.
+Smedleydog1 Hello Smedleydog1. You're Welcome, and it is very encouraging to know that this video is serving its purpose as I intended. So glad to know it helped.
Smedleydog1 am I able to use it on D3300??
Change the video speed to 1.25
Thank me later
Thanks for this video buddy! Much appreciated.
Thank you soooo much I have been trying to figure this out for months!!!!!
the best review and explanation I have watched on this subject..quite doubt-blowing...thanks!
Another point to add is that the bokeh is different between the two lenses, with the G having a more rounded bokeh due to its curved aperture blades compared to the more hexagonal bokeh of the D lens. For many people the bokeh quality is important so I wanted to throw that out there in case people skim comments for more information.
Appreciate this explanation
Thanks buddy..Very helpful..keep up the good work..
I have only one question. I want to buy this 1.8D lens for macro photography and I plan to use it with a reverse ring. I know that the autofocus wouldn't work BUT will I be able to change the aperture via the external aperture ring...with a reverse ring???
The 50mm 1.8 D, does work with some lower end DX bodies. The D50 and D70, both have autofocus motors built in.
You can use the aperture ring when using a reversing ring or passive (unconnected) extension tubes.
Locate a small switch beneath where it reads; 1:1.8D and move the switch to the 'up' position. The aperture ring now moves freely.
When re-attaching this lens to your camera body, rotate the aperture ring to the f22 position, then move the switch to the 'down' position.
I have had many enjoyable hours when using a reversing ring or extension tubes with the 1.8 D.
A fabulous lens!
Hey there, Appreciate your comment. Yes Nikon 50mm 1.8D is a fabulous lens indeed. Best bang for the buck. It sure can produce some neat pictures. Thanks for stopping by!!!

Very educative now I can make a striaght forward decision on which one to go for. Thank you
Great video, helped out a lot! :)
So helpful, thank you very much!
super video sir.. great one to clarify beginners doubts. expecting many more good videos
Can you plz tell me:
1) whether I can control the aperture ring of 50mm 1.8 D through command dial of my camera D7200?
how to do this? I heard somewhere that you need to lock the aperture ring at F22 before fitting it with the camera..please elaborate
2) I want to to shoot with D7200 & 50mm 1.8D in totally manual mode... because I am doing videos most of the time.... In that case, should I place the (AF/M) toggle switch of the camera body in the manual mode?
3) Is the 50 mm 1.4D an yet better option? Considering the fact that you get more background blur and bokeh?
this has been so helpful! thank you :)
Excellent. I learned the hard way. Watched tons of videos and decided to buy the D to save money for my 3300. Bought it off eBay in great condition but when I put it on my camera, no about focus. After searching google I learned I did not have internal motor. I used the d lens for a month as a Manuel lens. I stopped in Best Buy to try the G and was amazed at the difference. I decided to buy a G lens locally off Craigslist today. I love it. Just posted my D lens. Wish I have seen this first. Thanks
+ExposedRoot You're Welcome. I had a few people tell me the same thing like you did here. That is what inspired me to do this video in first place. I am so glad to know it helps a lot of people out there. Have a good one!!!
ExposedRoot I agree
in online stores it shows that the 50 f/1.8d is equippied with the focus motor?
Many thanks for this video! I own the 50mm 1.8 D lens and never knew there was a different Nikon 50mm lens...I appreciate the explanation of the differences!
Very nice explanation! Thanks! :) But I think high-end DX bodies like 7000 series has a focus motor inside. D lenses work fine on those DX cameras as well.
You are right.
3:06 please let me know what is the use of the aperture ring, if my camera display EFF error?
Thanks a lot man. Informative video.
It is really a nice video. I have got a clear view of D/G Lens & Dx/Fx Camera Body with some technical operations. Thanks for making such a helpful video. Keep it up...
This was extremely helpful. Thank you.
Boss I dont have the perfect words to tell you that It is the most informative perfect video ever made on youtube. Thank you.
i know im my Nikon D3500 theres a digital rangefinder function so if i pair the D lens would it work?
I have a 50mm D lens and an 85mm G lens that I use on a d750 body. I keep having issues with my 50mm D lens fishing around for the focus and taking a bit more time to focus than all my other lenses. The 85mm G lens seems to find focus much quicker and reliably. Has anyone else found the 50mm G focuses better than the D series on a d750? I'm considering trading in the 50mm D for a G lens if my camera can use it without fishing around for the focus as much.
I need help bro im planning to give a friend a camera on a tight budget which should i buy? D3300 or eos 700d
Cn i no wat is the botton near appreature ring in nikon 1.8d nd when the apperture is at 1.8d then why autfocoys doesnt work on my camera nikon d7000.
Very good 👍Many thanks!

+Imhizbabegurl Pack You're Welcome. Enjoy!!

Man I wish I saw this video earlier! You are excellent at explaining
Excellent review. Thank you.
D has AF, but it requires AF motor in your camera body.
Thank you,it was a great video,to learned what is the difference between D and G lens.Again Thank you.
+Joseph Benedicto You're Welcom Joseph. So glad to know it helped. Enjoy!!!
hi, I have a question... if i have a FX body... its Useless to buy a 50mm 1.8G?? its the same that 50mm 1.8D?? i see that i would have 2 autofocus motors for nothing, please answer my question, bye thanks
Well done...subject clearly explained !!
Buna ziua! Obiectivul il vindeti si sparat?
Hey.....what is the light next to the shoot button ??
helpful info!
does crop sensor d7200 have the same ability as full sensor to help auto focus the D version?
+jethro_my Yes The 50mm f/1.8d will autofocus perfectly on the DX D7200 (as well as on the D7100, D7000 and D90). It has little to do with FX/DX,. However, the entry model DX bodies (D3x00, D5x00, D40) lack an autofocusmotor in the body). The D7200 does have an autofocus motor in the body.
Great information. Sound has a lot of static though.
Thanks a lot. u make it so simple and clear to me.
You're Welcome. Glad to know it helped!!!
+Epic Aperture please tell me which is good for d5200
Main reason I bought Nikkor AF 50mm 1/1.8D (for my Nikon D610)was,that this lens have a very small amount (0.3%) of barrel distortion.
Nikkor AF-S 50mm 1/1.8G is probably better lens, but it has more distortion (1.1%).
Thanks very informative 👍
Great information thanks
Well explained. Thank you
I have a film camera and would like to use a g lens
How does the Aperture the d lens has an Aperture ring.
D has autofocus... You just have a Autofocus motor in the camera
Only in 7000 series bro .. not in 3000 or 5000 series
@@rakeshjakhar9383 i had it in ny D700
Silly question: if I want to change the aperture of the 1.8 D mounted on a D3300 can I do it from the camera or it can only be done on the lens aperture ring?
I don't really care for autofocus, I never use it. But I've never used an aperture ring
On the D lenses you lock the aperture ring to minimum aperture (f/22 on the 50mm 1.8D) before mounting them to modern cameras like your D3300. After that one extra step, the aperture is controlled through the camera just like it is on your G lens.
Sleeplessdawg thanks mate
Thanks for your straight to the point answers.
You’re Welcome!!!
Very useful information, thanks
Hey Al As, you're Welcome. Appreciate your comment. Enjoy!!!
Finally your video cleared my confusion. Otherwise no one showed that small lever thing in camera body. They just brag about SWM, autofocus blah blah! Saved my money by not investing in 1.8D. Will go for 1.8G for my d5300.
useful content. thanks buddy
To clarify before I buy, can I use manual focus on the 1.8d and still film on the Nikon d3200
+Ethan Clark I'm pretty sure you can. Because the d3200 has no autofocus motor in the body, the lens behaves as a manual focus lens. That's the only limitation. For shooting films instead of stills, some people even prefer to focus manually.
EWCvisuals hey did you get the 1.8 D to use with your d3200?
A clear explanation thanks!
Great to know it helped!!!
which one is the best either D of G?
@Epic Aperture - I enquired in Nikon stores. You are incorrect. Both lens have AF - means auto focus. Just that, there is a Silent wave motor in 1.8G hence, it is AF-S.
finally doubt cleared. thank you :)
Attiq Bhayo Glad to hear it helped... Enjoy!!!
good video ,,,if 1.8d on d5200 and i want to change aperture, is can change it from aperture mode or manualy change it with aperture ring
+Febi Ardiansyah Yes, you can. Just leave the aperture ring in the lock position at f/22, and change aperture in the A (or M) mode.
Thanks a lot!
you know what.. you are AWESOME.. Thank you very much
Good explanation on d and g lens.i must approximate you a lot of thanks
Appriciate
Niceeeee simple and helpful
Will it compatible for Nikon D5600 ?
Its very useful..
thank you for this information
What's wrong with the others? I've searched for a simple comparison of the two but no one explained it as I needed. Thank you for the concise illustration!
You’re Welcome. Glad to know it helped! Enjoy!
Great!!
Great..doubts totally clear
Nice Bro.....Best Explanation Ever

+Rodolfo Troncoso You're Welcome Rogolfo. Have fun!!
Thank you a million.
You're Welcome. Hope it helped. Cheers!
hlw bro, would you like to give me suggestion on should i buy a 55-300mm zoom lens for my nikon d7200 body or not??? i am little bit confuse that which one should i choose 55-300mm or 55-200mm. is there any chance of being soft of picture taken after 200mm focal length using 55-300mm ???
thanx in advance :)
Angkon Ahmed Hey, both of those are good start up lenses. I personally have not use either of those. But i don't think there would be an issue of pictures being soft if you use a good tripod and possible a shutter release of some sort on full zoom to prevent any shaking movements. Since it is not a constant Aperture, the softening issue gets rectified to a certain extend by that itself, if any.
Also, if you are using a post processing program like lightroom, it won't be an issue. May i ask what kind of photos are you looking to take with this lens?.
thank you men (y)
Helpful
Is 1.8 g is compatible with nikon d5300
+ Epic Aperture you need to remake this video after you do your homework because you are wrong the 1.8D 50mm autofocus does work on DX cameras the autofocus doesn't work on lower end Nikon body's but it the autofocus works just fine on all of the 7000 series cameras know what your saying before you go off and make a video and furthermore that 50mm 1.8d lens has a screw drive autofocusing which works on camera with internal autofocusing motors like the 7000 series that Nikon has been making for years now
Big Dog Peck u need to listen carfully he said on most of not all of lol

gulbadan singh thank you bro blessings be onto you and your family. All praise be to Allah
this video is a gem
Lot of positive comments. What everyone needs to know is the many DX (cropped sensor) cameras have built-in motor (e.g. Nikon D7100, D7200). It is not true that only FX cameras have the motor. While publishing this video in June 2015, this is a huge misleading information. Secondly, I didn't like the sudden spike in sound level when changing topics. That is simply silly.
The D Lenses work very well on the D100, D200, D300, D50, D70, D80, D90, D7000, which are all DX sensors. I have the original 50mm AF without the 'D'. It does a few odd things on my D850 when using a Flash.
very helpful
Very Good
Tnxxxxxxx....
thank you bro
Nikon D3400 is Full frame camera are not?
the nikkor 1.8 D should work on the D90, right?
Hey there, Yes it should work on a D90, because D90 body has a AF screw on its F mount.
It was useful.
thanks buddy... :)
