      You’re never totally alone. I don’t think it’s nearly as bad as critics say. It’s still got great Entwistle which is sorely lacking ever since. It’s just that Kenney Jones doesn’t get that much respect including from Daltrey. I thought he did a good job but he was a timekeeper and opposite Moons style. Also The Who we’re amazing on their 1979 tour with Jones. Just not as good in 1982. I have the laserdisc Who Rocks America. They were fine. Much better by the way than the 1989 big band show. So hold your ground. I’m with you. There’s a lot worse out there. By the way right now I’m listening to live Dylan from 1978 and critics hate it. The Budokan tour era. It’s fucking great. Lol. Thanks so much

    The Stones two gigs in Brussels on October 17, 1973 just kills thanks to Mick Taylor. An official release is in the Super deluxe box of GHS. Thanks so much - really. Stones Brussels is amazing. I love the official release (I have it in the GHS super deluxe), plus when they downloaded it officially years before, I burned a copy and then bought a "pirate" version of that. But I had the bootleg years before and the bootleg version is different - they're both amazing. Prime Stones. GHS is a special album to me - the first Stones album I bought with my own money the day it came out - I was ten. It was my third Stones album after Sticky Fingers and Hot Rocks. Any live GHS is special to me, and for me no beating Mick Taylor. Thanks again as always for all your support. So happy you enjoy my little channel. Truly brings a smile to my face. Happy Thanksgiving. Very best, Alan

    Finally encountered this video. I don't listen to a lot of live albums anymore, but I still love Live at Leeds (the single CD version is THE ONE I agree), Frampton, and my all-time favorite Supertramp Paris. At this point I like to listen to Genesis Live rather than Seconds Out, just for the rawness of it. But Seconds Out is indeed an all-timer.
    One worth mentioning is It Bites - Thank You and Goodnight. They have a big 80s sound that might not appeal, but they're very tuneful and witty, which helps. They're also highly accomplished. And just about every track is not an attempt at recreating the studio version. On the contrary, they cut and add new complex bits that make it a must-have for a fan.
    I'm now going to listen to Renaissance at Carnegie for the first time! Thanks.

      Thanks so much. I hope you enjoy Renaissance live at Carnegie Hall. I still listen to it regularly. And a perfect mix of rock with a symphony orchestra. I once bought an It bites studio album. Had a great cover. Don’t remember which one. I thought was just ok and didn’t keep it. But I know they’re pretty well respected for modern day neo-prog.

    Can't wait for "Best Live Albums Vol.2." I have all but four of these. Bangladesh was one of my first Albums in '74. Love The Who Live at Leeds especially the expanded version #2. I saw the Wings Over America tour in '76 at the Kingdome where they filmed part of the movie. Also saw Peter Frampton in '76 and '77 in support of Frampton Comes Alive. Also at The Ritz in NYC in the late '90s. He played the album from start to finish from what I remember. Bob Mayo on keyboards. I'm a big Paul Simon fan and I happen to meet him about 20 years ago at an airport terminal I was working at. Extremely nice guy, he answered all my questions and he even signed a copy of his boarding pass for me. The only thing that was odd was he never made eye contact with me. He is a bit short so I always wondered if that was it. I guess I'll never know. Still love Get Your Ya Ya's Out but I played it to Death since it was the only non- bootleg recoding I had till the record splat bootlegs of the '75 tour. First time I saw them. Changed my life. Keep Rollin' Man, Rust Never Sleeps!

    Have to say, the deluxe version of Get Ya-Ya's Out is a money grab. They should have not only combine 1st and 2nd CD into one, but play the songs in the correct order as played at the concert. The Stones concerts in 1969 were about 75 minutes long. Therefore the complete concert, with the songs in the correct order, could fit on one CD. One thing I read is when Mick says "Charlie is good tonight", the comment is made before they play Satisfaction, not Honky Tonk Women. But I really like when the woman in the audience yells "paint it black, paint it black you devil' and the Stones start playing Sympathy for the Devil. That is great moment on the album.

      @TheAlanRosenbergShow  Před rokem

      I hear you. The price though wasn’t terrible. Packaging and booklet is nice. The opening acts cd is good. They could have combined their set as you said but they wanted to keep the original album as was because such a classiic. But I agree with you. Could have the deluxe with different order and also the classic original as well. In general The Stones deluxe stuff is lacking compared to the other biggies like Beatles and Who.

    Like you Alan, I love live albums too. When I'm exploring a new band, their highest rated live album is often where I start unless there is a really obvious studio album to try.
    They also frustrate me for what isn't there, either on albums released or live recordings that need to be released officially.
    When I get to my (long) list, you'll see that I rate Seconds Out by Genesis extremely highly, but it could have been so much better. As it brings together songs from mainly 1977 plus something from 1976, I want the deluxe version with the other songs recorded at those concerts. It seems crazy to me to release an album from the Wind and Wuthering tour and not feature Eleventh Earl of Marr and One For The Vine in particular. Sadly, they never performed Blood On The Rooftops live. Then there is the issue that Steve Hackett seems to low down in the mix.
    Talking of Genesis, where's the deluxe version of Genesis Live with Supper's Ready restored to the set list? I can understand leaving it off when they wanted a 40 odd minute vinyl album, but there's plenty of room on the CD and with Peter Gabriel's stories added back.
    I'm frustrated that we don't have an official album from The Who for any concerts between 1973 (post Quadrophenia) though to 1976. We've seen the odd track released on compilations, so we know the recordings exist.
    I love Roxy Music in their art rock phase, but Viva, their first live album is compiled from recordings from three years and it's too dominated by one of the early Roxy songs that I'm not keen on, The Bogus Man.
    Only in the last few years have we seen Bruce Springsteen get his act together and release a few recordings from his prime period, from Born To Run to The River.
    We've already talked about our difference of opinion on occasion based live albums, like Woodstock, The Last Waltz etc. You can add in Live Aid too, I'd have loved to have been at each of these, but I prefer focusing on one artist, rather than jumping between them.
    You'll see that some of your favourites feature very highly in my listing based on plays. Lucky you're to have been at the Live Rust concert.

    • @paulsimister944
      @paulsimister944 Před rokem

      I was going to give you a list of all the live albums that lie in my top 500 most played albums, but there were about 90 albums tied for the number of plays that went from about 480 to 570, so I thought I'd share my top 50 (ish) and then pick out the albums by bands who haven't already featured. It didn't lose as many albums as I expected, so the list is still long.
      I've also refined my sorting sequence so that when albums are tied on total plays, I give preference to those from 2023 first and then 2022.

      Your lists are amazing and really comprehensive. Like you I own literally hundreds of live albums. My two videos only show my top 44. So interesting and cool that of my top six (Frampton, Stones Ya Yas, Simon & Garfunkel Central Park, Bowie's David Live) only the Who's Live at Leeds and Yessongs are the only appearances on your list. Nice to see Dylan's Budokan - perhaps we are the only two fans of that album. Great to see Karnataka's Strange Behavour - I love that album! Stupidy is also amazing of course. I have to get that Golden Earring live album - time to dig into them. Big fan of the Waterboys live one - someone once told me it was unauthorized, but I really like it (The Pan Within/Because The Night is beyond incredible on it). Nice to see Magenta and of course Mostly Autumn who are a personal favorite - their live collection "The Story of Us"...was my gateway into their music and one of my all time faves. As a lifelong Allman Brothers fan (who owns and knows every one of their albums, and listens to them), I definitely hear you. It's no surprise it makes most lists of the greatest live albums ever...after all it was their first commercial hit album and their popularity deservedly jumped way up. I love the album. But here's why it didn't make this particular list (as well as the 2 CD The Fillmore Concerts). My list comprises what I actually listen to the most IN IT"S ENTIRETY. For the majority of people, including big Allman's fans...you typically have to be in the mood to hear 23 minutes of Whipping Post and 20 minutes of You Don't Love Me. Alright, I can listen to 13 minutes of Elizabeth Reed at any time. And when I talk to "big" fans and I ask that question after they tell me I'm wrong and this album should be #1 etc...and I ask when was the last time you listened to the whole album and how often do you listen to the whole album....well then they get my point and how I rank. So there's my explanation. Maybe you listen to the whole album all the time...then no argument. But boy do I have to be in the mood to hear 35 minutes of Mountain Jam.. I don't have that issue with any of the other albums in my ranking. Thanks so much for watching and commenting.

    I've always wondered why all these stale FM classic rock stations don't substitute live versions for overplayed studio tracks - at least once in awhile.

    • @TheAlanRosenbergShow
      @TheAlanRosenbergShow  Před 2 lety

      Absolutely. My cars are old and all have CD players, thankfully, so I virtually never hear radio now, except for short distances. I don't have satellite radio and I have approx. 5000 CD's, so I'll never pay for radio to pretty much hear the same boring playlists. Terrestrial radio has been so sad for decades now. Love when the DJ's are excited about a new album, let's say Springsteen or the Stones or Dylan...whoever and they briefly talk about it and then they'll say - so lets play some Springsteen (or whoever) and they play "Born To Run". excruciating to me. I don't know how a DJ can do it, assuming they like music....

    • @AnthonyStJames
      @AnthonyStJames Před 2 lety

      @@TheAlanRosenbergShow Not up to the DJs the great majority of the time, as I'm sure you know. They have their orders not to play newer music by their core artists, unfortunately. SiriusXM has a channel called Deep Tracks, and they've turned me on to quite a few worthy tracks that had slipped thru the cracks over the years. BTW, I'm a late-blooming Wishbone Ash fan, too. They were inexplicably absent from radio bitd - even from the free-form stations.

    • @TheAlanRosenbergShow
      @TheAlanRosenbergShow  Před 2 lety +1

      @@AnthonyStJames Once a year Sirius gives me a free week on my car to listen. There are many cool stations - especially the individual artist stations. Amazing to me they didn't have a Rolling Stones station. I did listen for that week a bit to Deep Tracks and I think there was Classic Vinyl, but I still heard Hotel California and Stairway...I couldn't believe it. Yes, on terrestrial radio, clearly the DJ's can't pick the songs. What I meant was, it must be hard for the DJ's, again assuming they love the music, since they must since they had the passion to do the job. It must be so hard to be in the studio and have to listen to the same tracks over and over again. I'd go crazy. I can't imagine if for example I loved the new "Springsteen" album and I'm talking about it and then have to announce lets' play some Springsteen and it's Born To Run....uhhhh, I'd go nuts....But I remember FM radio in the 70's and they would play the new releases, in fact certain stations would debut the new albums and play the whole thing once. Different times. Some how I still think there must be a market for a radio station that would play new releases by classic artists, but I guess that's on Sirius. Oh well - thanks again and sorry for my rambling on.

    What about Lynyrd Skynyrd's One For The Road?

      I love it and it's a classic for sure. I literally have and love 100's of live albums - for me not at the very top, but it's a great one for sure. My first Skynyrd album actually.

    I have seen The Stones live and Frampton live twice and once with Humble Pie. Frampton is great but doesn’t come close to the Stones. Live versions of Midnight Rambler and Sympathy for the Devil alone make it #1 not too mention the other the great definitive versions of classics.

      Ya Ya's is my #2 of all time. I actually did a video on why Frampton Comes Alive is the greatest live album of all time. But hey #1 - #2 - out of thousands of live albums - still pretty impressive. Stones are my all time favorite band by far.

    I disagree, there are many forgotten rock memorabilia from the 70s-80s: Jethro Tull Bursting Out - Deep Purple Made In Japan Whitesnake- Led Zeppelin - Marillion The Thieving Magpie - Real To Reel etc etc.

      Hi Pierre. Thanks for watching and commenting. I’m not sure I understand your comment. I totally agree there are tons of great live albums. I love and own literally hundreds of them. Including both of your Marillions, purple, white snake and many more. For my top top can’t include everything. Thanks for watching.

    What you mention here about Live at Leeds and how it is so radically different from the Tommy album etc and how you prefer the version of Live at Leeds without the Tommy material on it etc is nonsensical because Live at Leeds WAS the tour in support of the Tommy album, the Tommy tour basically. To hear the ENTIRE performance from Leeds University with the full performance of the Tommy material is essential to fully appreciate where The Who were as a creative ensemble at that point in time. I couldn’t disagree with you more in what you say about preferring Live at Leeds without the second disc. The problem with Live at Leeds is that it should have been at least a double or even triple album to begin with and should have included the Tommy material as well from its initial release to give Who fans a more complete picture of the actual Who live concert at that time.

      You're 100% correct. I think you minunderstood what I was saying...for me. By the time they re-re-rereleased Live At Leeds again, this time with the complete Tommy on Disc 2, I've already gotten so many Live Tommy concerts. Including the 1970 Isle Of Wight Tommy performance. For me, I have enough. Is the Live At Leeds performance fantastic, yes, classic performance, yes, at that time in history, yes (but so is Isle Of Wight), do I ever listen to that 2nd Live at Leeds Tommy disc....no. That's what I was saying. Thanks for watching and commenting. I'm Tommy'd out.

      @@TheAlanRosenbergShow Fair enough. That makes sense actually because even when I've AB'd Leeds and Hull, or Leeds/Hull/Wight you're correct, too much Tommy. I guess what I was getting at is the fact that casual Who fans know Live at Leeds, they don't necessarily know Hull or even the Isle of Wight performance nearly as well. This is why Leeds should have included the Tommy material from day one.

      @@vbassone Yes, you're right. I've should have explained better. If a newbie to The Who never heard live Tommy, then the deluxe Live At Leeds is amazing and the go to. For me, with Hull and Isle of Wight and so many other later day performances, it's nice to have, but I never listen to it. Thanks so much again for watching and commenting. I really appreciate it.

      @@vbassone yes. Their great box sets. I love them. Apparently some go for a fortune now. I kick myself for not getting the thick as a brick box. It’s the only one I’m missing and not gonna pay crazy money for it. Thanks again.
