Fun fact, Bruce wrote Fire for rockabilly singer Robert Gordon, and even played piano on Robert's version. Those two Robert Gordon/Link Wray albums rock, good stuff! Great review Alan! I have been very close to purchasing this--but have not pulled the trigger in all these years. The River was a very big album for me when I was in high school, so there is a strong amount of sentiment attached to it for me. Part of what has prevented me from doing so is my (marginal) disdain for box sets--too big, too expensive, too much, no time to listen to all of the material. In recent years, I had a huge blood letting of many box sets that occupied my bookshelves after spending multiple years being not listened to. Most of these sets were jazz boxes, and I had a lot: Bill Evans, Sonny Rollins, Trane, Miles, Monk--all of them GONE, save for Evan's Complete Fantasy and Art Pepper's Hollywood All Stars. I just didn't have time (or in some cases, desire) to listen to all of this stuff. The only artist I have not sold box sets of is the Stones, for obvious reasons--but those box sets are, content wise, nothing special. I mean, I was thrilled when Tattoo You got the deluxe treatment--only to get a hardcover box filled with pictures and graphics. Looking at The River hard cover book, it has an essay by Mikal Gilmore (more often than not, those turn out to be revamped Wikipedia entries, regardless of who writes them) and the rest of the book is made up of photographs. As you like to say, 'more sizzle than steak'. Well, at least you get some mock ups of the recording session notes, and touring detail. And the mock up of his working notebook is a nice touch, as it takes me back to my journal days. The music on this set seems approachable: you get a remastered original album, the alternate single album, and a disc of outtakes/leftovers/rarities, etc. The DVDs look very interesting, as I'd like to see that Arizona show, and hopefully the documentary is not something akin to what we'd see on those lame Rock Legends shows on AXS. The packaging of the CDs looks similar to what Bob did on the Complete Basement Tapes (another one that gleefully hit the auction block sometime ago). Some of these box sets though, are still, just too much. I wouldn't even THINK of trying to tackle these mega-tomes that Neil Young's archives have put out. That being said, I think it's a real shame that ABKCO released all of these box or 'anniversary' sets of those Stones classics--and it pains me to say, they pretty much all suck. I mean, Satanic was very well packaged, but there was no content to it whatsoever. And Banquet, Bleed, Ya Yas all offered less than that. You know, you SHOULD do a review of those ABKCO box sets, if only to illustrate the skimpiness of them! Please, do it! I would also love to see you review their mono box set, as I think there is much discussion that could be generated from that.

    • @TheAlanRosenbergShow
      @TheAlanRosenbergShow Před dnem

      Thanks so much - that's really kind and I appreciate it. I'll do the Springsteen Darkness box in a day or two, so you may want to hold off till you see that. Another really cool boxset. I bought them when they came out and haven't looked if they're still available and what they're going for, but someone else said they're very expensive, which is a bummer. Musically the River box really only has 11 unreleased tracks - the other 11 are on Tracks which is another fantastic boxset. The DVD's of the Tempe AZ show were fantastic but I only watched it once - it's like 3 1/2 hours long. So not sure how much you would actually play The River box. The book is mostly photos like you said, so you look at it like once. With that said, I think it's a great box and fantastic as an "individual album" box set. Not much more he could've put in it really. But depending on price - debatable if worth it for you. I haven't listened to it in like 10 years. But with boxsets I have like 25 in my backlog I may never get thru. It's crazy and I'm trying to stop buying them, even when I find a cheap deal. The Stones boxes, as you said, are definitely more sizzle than steak. Musically, amongst the most disappointing reissue deluxe editions from a major artist. I never even bought the Abkco ones except for The Ya Ya's box, which was disappointing as well. The Let It Bleed, Beggars - c'mon - it's all sizzle and NO STeak...lol. I won't even buy it. I have shown some Stones boxes (and you can see them, well some of them, on the shelf on my video). I mean the 1969 shows were filmed for Gimme Shelter. How on earth have they not released that footage. How could you not include that footage in the Ya Ya's box. A full concert or more - would've been amazing. And why do I prefer the original bootleg recordings over the ones the Stones release in the boxsets which have been re-recorded with new Mick vocals which don't match the sound of the time. I appreciate cleaning up the old bootleg / incomplete recordings (Springsteen did it on The River box too), but the sound still has to match the original time period. Have you heard "Following The River" from the Exile bonus tracks. Nice song, but doesn't sound at all from the time with Jagger's vocals IMHO. And that's just one example. Anyway, I went off...lol. I appreciate you dumpling boxsets you'll never listen to and making space. I'm dumping some stuff as well. It gets ridiculous. Thanks so much again.

    Hi, Alan. That has to be one of the greatest box sets ever. Unfortunately I don't own it...man of the people Bruce Springsteen is charging way to much for it! :) But I have checked it out from the library. As great as the River is as a double album, it would potentially be even better as a triple album. It's my favorite period of Springsteen's music, not just the original album itself but the outtakes. I love the sound, the production, the consistency in the songwriting. I love how the band sounds, the usage of keyboards, the dark edge that even the most upbeat songs retain. So many great songs from this period, and a lot of them have this Elvis Costello/Graham Parker angry young man vibe to them that I think suits Springsteen really well at this point in his career. Or if not a triple album, he could have released a second double album with all that A grade material. I really wish the price would come down on that box set, although much of that material did end up on Tracks, which I do own.

    Much like Steve Hackett keeping the Genesis material alive, Martin is keeping the Tull catalog going. I too am impressed with the singer and his guitar playing. I heard them doing "Hunting Girl". Very good. I also heard them doing "a song for jeffrey" and others from "This Was". And songs from Stand Up and Benefit too. My favorite era is the '71-'75 lineup. I saw Thick as a Brick tour twice, Passion Play twice, and WarChild/Minstrel. I saw them many times after that, but they were at their best when Jeffrey Hammond was in the band. Now Tull's music got more complex and intricate after Jeffrey, but the stage shows were never as exciting as when he was in the band. As you may know, Ian played with Hammond, Evan, and Barlow before "Jethro Tull" was formed. But years later as Tull became successful, Ian brought each of those three friends back one by one. Evan on Benefit. Hammond on Aqualung, and Barlow on Thick. Back in the days before scores of moving lights and massive video walls, Tull shows were incredibly exciting because of the musicians on the stage playing and performing. Ian's physical stage movements were amazing. Jeffrey's stage movements were also amazing. Barre and Evan were too. At the Thick as a Brick show in '72 they played an extended version of the whole album, lasting over an hour. Ian then said, "and now for our next number"

    Godspeed on your Nick Cave journey! For me, I'm not the biggest fan of his really early stuff or the later albums, but everything in between...wow! From Your Funeral, My Trial through Push the Sky Away, that's a fantastic winning streak. Midnight Oil, also one of my favorite bands. If all you have is Diesel and Dust, well, you have a lot of listening to do my friend! Blue Sky Mining would be close to a top ten album for me, and their latest, Resist, is one of their best. Hoodoo Gurus are a band I used to love, and I keep meaning to get caught up with the latter part of their catalogue, I kept listening after Crank, which in fact is a fine album, as are all the records that preceded it.
