Sainte Chapelle is my favorite place to visit in Paris. It always fills me with awe for its beauty and for the craftsmanship that it took to build this perfect jewel of a building. It may have been deconsecrated during the French Revolution, but there is still a very sacred feeling when you enter the upstairs chapel with all of those beautiful windows.
We're busy inventing aircraft, smart phones, space travel, the internet, modern medicine, and a myriad of things that they couldn't have conceived of. That freed up their minds to build these biblical architectural graphic novels. Pretty low-level stuff relative to what our brains can do. That being said, of course it's lovely. But I don't think the characterization that humanity has lost its way is a just one. Don't forget the cost to humanity that made this lovely building possible-- the tragedy of the Crusades and the oppression of Feudalism being chief among them.

I have attended concerts and recitals in this beautiful room. The acoustic is pretty nice and to have the opportunity to listen/see classical music ensembles add to the elegance of this place. Make sure that you find a recital happening during one of the many evenings of the year, you won't regret it. Also, bring a good camera, no flash please, and do some amazing photography as soon as the concert finish..it helps if you speak some French and show respect to the staff working there.

I was there last summer and purchased the museum pass. Skipped lines to get tickets and just had to go through security. Best decision I made and worth it if your are visiting multiple museums and monuments like I did. This church is amazing when you walk out of the staircase into the light and see these massive stained glass windows you are just stunned by the beauty.
It makes a lot of difference. Instead of moving on, you listen. Robot voice is annoying like hell and totally redundant since almost any person on earth can speak anyway.

The case could be made that it was purchased from the Venetians, since the crown was used as collateral on loans that went bad. The Venetians got word at the last minute that Louis IX would cover the debt and redeem the crown. Until the money arrived, the crown was taken to Venice and was displayed in the church of San Marco before making its way to Paris.

It's beautiful to me, but atheists like me love gothic architecture for aesthetic reasons. If you people are so passionate about gothic architecture I'd recommend the Cologne cathedral; (In Germany where it's spelled Koln with an umlaut over the "o") and it's the most perfect example of high French gothic architecture. It brought me to tears when I finally visited it 10 years ago after wanting to be inside of 26 years, (longer than I waited to be inside a woman) and Catholic children made fun of me for that. Yes, another example of the Gothic craftsmanship with this magnificent Köln Cathedral and its exceptional and sumptuous altarpiece of the 14th Century given by the Clarisses (nun order). I saw the Sainte Chapelle in Paris before and after about 10 years of restoration by a sunny afternoon, no comparison. I was absolutely dazzled by its beauty, its lightness. This gem was built in only 7 years.

@@francinesicard464 7 YEARS? No. The Cologne Cathedral was built in 632 years: from 1248 until 1880 (albeit with a couple centuries long breaks.)
What is amazing with Cologne Cathedral is that it was the only building standing in the old city after the infamous bombing.
