Despite growing up in a world that told him from early childhood that he had to conform to the dark clothing colors and violent behavior of traditional masculinity, Richie’s colorful style and powerfully gentle spirit could not be crushed. The odds embedded in systemic racism were stacked against him from early childhood, as he noticed people fearful of him at 10 years old and was arrested for simply being late to class in grade school. Swimming against the tide of white supremacy ultimately led Richie to an arrest for robbing a pharmacy, a crime normally treated to a sentence of 2-6 years, which for him shockingly became an initial 150 years to life. But between the fervent support of the BLM organizing community and Richie’s unwavering faith in his authentic self, 7 harrowing years in the belly of patriarchal prison culture turned into a moment of vulnerable leadership and heroism.
From prison, Richie launched Success Stories, an organization which provides “an alternative to prisons that builds safer communities by delivering feminist programming to people who have caused harm,” where he teaches toxic masculinity workshops to incarcerated young men. This vocation reduced Richie’s own prison sentence by introducing a bill that became Proposition 57, which allows inmates to earn time off of their sentence by going to rehabilitative programs like Success Stories.
Today Richie is a prison abolitionist and feminist who visits prisons to speak about the psychological prison of patriarchy while wearing shades of pink and his favorite Hello Kitty shirts, courageously showing the world what real freedom looks like.

I've learned in relationships to ask for what I want, and it's even ok if the other person says no, it doesn't mean I don't deserve it, just means is not gonna come from them.
So true!
I love him 😭 What a kind, generous, thoughtful spirit he has. The US prison system is an abomination. I'm happy that people like Richie and so many others are fighting for change. I hope in my lifetime there'll be an enormous shift in how society treats the people who need help the most.
It really is an abomination. We hope so too.
“They’re just fighting for the only love they get.” Daaaamn. Simple words to say such big truth. This is great.
❤️So glad you were moved!
The beginning of his story is the most shocking to me. Imagine being arrested for playing rough and being late to class?! This is why cops don't belong in schools smh
Right it’s so evil
Perhaps rough means beating some-one’s teeth out ? Perhaps even racist ? A white girl ? Just wondering.
@@louisdewit4429 Your first assumption is that he beat a poor lil white girls teeth out??
@@AliRaza-dc2yq dude is clearly trolling. Try not to give people like that the satisfaction of your reacting, it’s what they’re after!
My school experience was the polar opposite. Violence, destruction, abuse and no consequences because tHey aRe chILDren
What a powerful example of how choosing authenticity is transformative♥️
The ultimate!
Is it authentic?
It seems like instead of creating his own style he just decided to wear what is traditionally marketed towards women... Seems like most the comments are conditioned to nod their heads in agreement.
@@JusDion conditioned?? No. Clothes are genderless. Pink doesn’t mean it’s only for females. He’s authentic.
The emotional awareness and intelligence... WOW!
Yes!! ❤️
Wow, I could listen to him for hours! The journey and the work he’s done (and are doing). It’s amazing!
So glad it resonated with you!
I am sure he could talk about himself non stop for about 48hours if you want
@@petermartin2924 I wouldn’t complain 😄
He said some really profound things here. ❤🙏🏾
Such an amazing story. "Justice" in North America is so so so broken. I see some people waking up, but there is so much education still to be done.
Agreed! Glad his story resonates with you
what a miracle that he survived hell and used the experience to reach self actualization. incredible human
So inspiring! xo
heartbreaking how the system is. glad people like richie are doing the work they do to change things. 🖤
Agreed
"The change of events only God could write..." genius. You can see the boy in the man, not that he is immature - but he found again the brilliance and radiance he was meant to share with our world before his boyhood was interrupted.
He's awesome. I love how he folds his clothes.
SAME! Lover that you noticed that!
@@StyleLikeU1 So many of your interviewees just drop their clothes on the floor. He is extremely neat.
a lot of times that is a habit from prison. You can get punished for any kind of messiness, so it becomes a life or death situation to be neat. I hope he's just a tidy person though.
Prison Habit to fold clothes perfectly or else.
He seems like such a sweet soul, who's made great mistakes, as many of us have. I'm glad for everything they've done at Success Stories
we are too!
He's not the only sweet soul who's made mistakes. He's also a brave soul.
As a Black Man, my soul has been touch!
So happy this video resonated with you!💓
Smart young man. MANY more people need to hear this. Interesting that he refuses to use the word "bitch" even in this context.
Thank you for supporting Richie and our channel!💗
I remember watching a clip of him in prison doing workshop about toxic masculinity. Happy to see him still fighting.
Thank you for supporting him then and now. xoxo
Absolutely loved this young man. Only wish him the best of life. We all learn from our experiences, and grow. His words are powerful. Onward and upward ⬆️. ♥️

Listen dude is soooo on point, I SERIOUSLY am going to follow him for sure.
He's incredible! As is his non profit, Success Stories!
This message is so precious and he's so beautiful, especially the things he says. And I love the way he's folding his clothes :)
We agree
hes such a great story teller
Amen! xo
As an artist in India, having lived the experiences of Institutional discrimination, this Dude has all my love and respect. Also he is such a balm to our aching hearts under the weight of critical theory. I would definitely ask him out on a date ❤️😽

Dearest Richie,

You have taken adversity and turned it into positivity.
I'm sure that everyday you are somehow making great changes in people who thought that their lives could not be changed.
You are a kind caring and loving soul and always remember this.

He is an excellent and gifted teacher.
So true! He's so honest. xoxo
Smiles, Richie, thankyou for sharing and being your authentic self.
Amazing interview.....thanks for sharing
Richie Reseda shares with us several very important realities regarding the world as it has so far functioned (against so many of us). As he removes his clothes to bare his body, he also removes from our eyes the oppressive and dehumanizing masks which we have been taught to wear (and which we have taken with us to our grave). A beautiful episode, a beautiful moment, a beautiful human being shining in authenticity, Thank you.
This was so beautiful! I'm inspired by his spirit.
Amen!
"Building trust in myself" Huge respect to you young man.
Oh this resonates profoundly. Thank you 🙏🏽

He’s so powerful and positive. An inspiration
Wowww I really enjoyed how he shared his story. And I love how authentic he is, it's oozing all over.
It's sooo attractive when someone is this vulnerable and authentic!!! 😍
Everything he said was so true and so needed to be heard in our society.
Also, hes an incredibly beautiful guy with great style and great hair.
This interview was OUT.STANDING. I was not expecting anything I learned from this profound young man! I hope he can take this video and use in his work. The level of knowledge - truly revolutionary explanations of toxic masculinity, patriarchy - prison culture - is very impactful.
What he fleshed out about why is it that young people (boys/men) turn to violence and we call them "monsters" - that what they are doing is trying to get love acceptance from wherever they can - and they get 'props' from other violent men etc for stabbing someone, hurting someone. This hit me in a particular lightbulb way because here in Philadelphia we are having an epidemic of young teenagers executing other young teenagers (young black men in the median age of 16 yrs old) - dozens. At least 1 reported each day on the news. And we are all at a loss to understand WHY. This explanation from someone who 'been there done that' is such an impactful insight to the outside onlookers like me. Clearly there's 'dysfunction' and anger etc -- but the impetus of the killings or violence is an outworking of some other losses. There was a phrase coined for young white mass shooters -- 'crying bullets' - acts of inner pain taken out on the world. The young man in the film though really reaching inside the mind and thought process because he lived it and articulates so powerfully.
This was truly an awesome interview.
Thank you for such a thoughtful comment, glad Richie resonated with you xo
Thanks for sharing! This gives me a shitload of hope :)

This interview was awesome! Man, what a life he's lived. I hope things only get better for him here on out.
Thank you for supporting us and
Richie!💓💓
I appreciate him sharing his story. So many people are so insulated from these issues because they don’t grow up in these circumstances. This work is important so we can begin to understand each other because the world we live in today is extremely complex and has become highly dysfunctional.
Thank you for this shared this with many of my male friends. Truly inspiring 🙏🏾🙏🏾🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤
Thank you so much for sharing and for being here! xo
That first statement is the realist statement I’ve ever heard. Much love to this person!

His experience describes the school to prison pipeline. So many of our systems don't give us a chance.
