This is honestly one of my favorite channels. You remind me of my dad, and working with him as a kid on stuff around the house. Obviously you're at a much larger scope but it's that perfect blend of nostalgia and genuine learning and wisdom that comes through all of your videos.
Union Carpenter here (in Oregon). The best practice we have for placing bolts in concrete is to make a template using two sheets of plywood. Screw the two plywood templates together. Mark center and bolt locations. Drill out bolt holes for exact size or just a hair bigger of bolts.
Then make a box by using the two plywood templates and space them with a row of 2x4 along the outside edge. Place bolts in Template and attach with nuts top and bottom. Add template or box to concrete for work. With centers marked on template, you can adjust for placement and elevation. On large pours we might cover the exposed bolts with white lithium grease or aluminum foil to preserve the threads from being coated with concrete.
Love your channel, good luck!!!
Used to build traffic signals. Our bases (SW Missouri) 36" diameter 8-10ft+ 2" ×6,7,8ft J'bolts & #4 rebar cage. 1/8" flat template to the bottom of J aligns them. Used it to build top template from dbl 2x4 & 3/4 plywood
Yesssss
Stayed tuned for more of This Old Gate!
Cheers Scott!
With all that ground and form work it's going to be a gate for the end of time!
I dont know why but this video feels like an old school EC video, just Scott and a camera and us. Cant wait for part 2
Great work Scott, just like being there. Look forward to seeing the progress
I think You said it last video when You mentioned “ Too much is just enough “😂
Massive rebar framework. Excellent job
I spent a week with a Kubota like that. What a fantastic tool. So effective and versatile.
Excellent. How great it would be to have you as a neighbor!
Oh man am I looking forward to this series!
Concrete work was what originally drew me to this channel, so its always great to see; and I'm hoping/assuming we will get some blacksmithing work too. But beyond that, I cant wait to see the finished product for something that needs to be functional, structural, and aesthetic for the EC property. The draft work is already looking impressive!
I love the 'In the hole' POV! Let's get into the dirt and see this stuff!
At least if it's overdone it's not ever underdone 😂
Too much is always enough
I like to build things to last well into the Millennium myself! 😎
I use road fabric between the original ground and whatever I am adding, usually gravel.
I really appreciate the explanations and examples you give
A word to the wise.
You need 2 conduits running across for powered gates, 1 power, and 1for communication.
Run (4) 1 inch.
Typically the "slave" side is opposite of the "master" side where you trench power too..and control panel..
Christmas lights and globe..on top of column must be accounted for if a lady is involved.
I installed automatic gates for 15 years.
You're going to want a 3r sub-panel for the lighting and controls in the near vicinity too, and document the work and buried electric.
If you're running wire into columns, you want your conduit to last, plan accordingly. Plan for sensors or timers. If you're running lighting down the drive, you should run 2 sets of conduit and bury a couple sets of comm wire too.
I've had to dig out concreted light posts where guys ran UF, at least make an accessible junction nearby.
I love watching this channel! I've learned so much!
So close to the highway, I’d put a block wall there, or a concrete one, just in case a vehicle loses control. Love the videos 👍
There's a pretty substantial ditch between the highway and the driveway. I suspect that a vehicle going fast enough to jump the ditch would also punch through a block wall.

God bless you, Scott. So thankful for who you are.
So this is Ralphie from a the Christmas Story all grown up 😂😂😂😂😂
A mini excavator would be awesome! I have a backhoe attachment for my skidsteer, which is all I really need for what I do. Here we don't have trouble with post pushing out of the ground but rather the snow load pushing the posts down into the ground. Thanks for the video.
Thats going to be gorgeous!
Mate, looks good! Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for posting, and keep up the good content.
Tacking those bars is better then no ties. And its just your gate, right. Thats a better rebar and footing then 99% of the people would do. Amazing work
The end of the video reminds me of an old Microsoft screensaver. Great work as always
Right on time Scott! I'm just starting planning on my shop expansion project and your little side trip to talk about "black mud" really gave me some things to consider. Thanks again, keep up the good content.
Very nice. I live in Western Oregon and we have the expansive clay too. Generally for fence posts I go 3 feet down and just use 3/4 minus gravel that moves around with the soil. This seems fine even on corners (where you have a lot of sideways load). For my recent (mother of all) hammock frames I case a concrete pier about 3.5 ft down and a 12 inch sonotube. My little 30hp tractor has just enough power to run a 12inch auger in the clay but boy if it ever got stuck I'd be in a world of hurt..:)
Thank you I look forward to the next one
Thanks for the awesome content and great videos!!!
Excellent.
THANK YOU . KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK
I was expecting a pole hole attachment at the most but then you explained it and I understand. Fantastic video as usual. Thanks explaining the difference between the excavators.
Well done.. good plan.. love the channel as always!! Hope mine could ever be half as good !!! 😊
I sincerely hope that I am not the only one that closes his eyes and holds up a hand in front of his eyes when surprised with a weld arc on the tv. Excellent description of the thought process behind your design decisions, my dude.
Love all of your content and incredibly glad that i can learn from you despite being half way across the country. Excited for this project even more because i need to build a gate for a second drive thats being used by everyone but me 🤦♂️
I for one greatly welcome an automatic gate. It will make a huge difference.
Well done guys!….like a kid at the heavy machinery yard…..a little of this, a touch of that, a some of those! Bob’s ur Uncle! Keep up the great videos gentlemen!
Well done, I absolutely love anything you post. I know your dad would so proud of you. I would love if you could read us another book and Keep up the good work.
I like your methods!
Thankyou 👍
Awesome work 👍🏽👍🏽
nothing beats a good build a good foundations for concrete homeowners tend yo just throw somthing on,
Great content
When you're done there mind swinging by north Idaho and doing the same for my property.
“Peace of mind is worth more than 15 bucks, I’m sure.” Truer words have never been spoken.
Man, I Love Watching Your Work/Videos. Wish I Could Do A Few Jobs With You. I’m A Natural Builder Myself; It’s In My Blood🤪.With that said? Tack Welding Those Rebars, Will Not Take Away Tinsel Strength Not Any Other Strength From Them. I Retired As A Chemical Plant Pipe Welder. I Shall Watch Nearly, If Not All Of Your Videos! Thanks For Sharing Your Building Skills⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
At 2:14 did that truck stop on the highway, reverse and then turn left?
You should totally do a automatic gate opener I recently installed one on my gate and it so easy to get in and out with my truck and trailer.
Oh that will be awesome when the DCC meets at your house again.
Be sure to add an engraved QR code onto the gate once it's done linking to the video series for posterity 😆
Dear Scott, why did you put the cross-beam in between the pier foundations please? Best. PEK
Bought my 1st mini x Yanmar vio35 in late 2018 and made my last payment in July. 1600 hrs and could likely sell it for about $6-$8,000 less than what the original sale price.
Looks like a fun project keep a blacksmith out of trouble and invaders at bay.
Don't forget to attach the no trespassing sign, It gives you legal recourse.
Hey you're right next to Kilkenny
11:34 Did that orange car drive through the trench?
Ha ha! No, that was me… I could just barely drive around it but it was scary!
in some places in eaarth they dont put this good rebar in the buildings, i was in guatemala aand it was horrible what they had in their concrete ,
Outstanding summary on excavators. Work output is the managment term for what excavators do. The 1 for all machine does not exist.
You mention drag a hose if it reaches. If it does not, how many gallons does that bucket hold? Fill the bucket with water and roll the tractor low.
Can’t even imagine trying to live that close to such a busy noisy highway.. I’d be putting a for sale sign up and find some quiet land to enjoy my time left on this earth..
Gregory, look up at that columns of elcable. What do you think about this?
I prefer laying a mud Matt rather than gravel at the bottom of the hole. No need for compacting. Is it going to be a cantilever sliding gate?
What is the reason for the gravel under the concrete footings (other than slab on grade)?
In Texas , it's called black gumbo
Worried watching that bucket over the power lines (red paint). Were the lines pot-holed for depth or did the locator tell you the depth?
I'm pretty sure that the red paint lines were Scott's own layout for his project, not utilities locate marks. From other parts of the video it looks like all the power is overhead (including, I think the service.) I see a telecom pedestal further down the driveway, but that's a ways away, and a Tcom locate would be orange.
@6:21 Heard in a vehicle driving by on the highway, "mom, why is that man digging a grave by the side of the road?"
"Because there is too much traffic on the road."
what we did is zip tie a length of snow fencing to a wooden dowel and then place that into loops of rope to close it
👍
“Too much is always enough”
Belt and bracers job. That gate ain’t going to move anytime soon.
👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
I love your channel but cant figure out what this episode had to do with a gate ?
No matter how many times I see it, muscle memory still makes me squint and want to look away when I see someone strike an arc in a video. 😂
Pears? You’re supposed to eat pears. 😅
That is definitely a prison type footing but will last a multiple lifetimes. Looking forward to this project because I’ll be installing a 14’ gate in the coming months.
Build the wall! 😂
I WAS LOST AFTER HE DUG THE HOLE
History in the making and the people driving by may not know it.
WOW! Lot of work for a couple of gate posts.
WAs that 332 6010?
Where’s the tool tank?
wow Scott it looks like you're right next to a highway. How annoying is that?
Well that ain’t goin anywhere!
6:32 "Peace of mind is worth more than fifteen bucks, for sure." Amen!
7:32 I'd want to wear a mask in all that dust.
This dude is the father in law you dream of getting.
12:08 welding rebar always seems like a no no. Makes us structural engineers cringe. But, you actually can. Typical rebar is ASTM A615 material. You can not weld that. But, if you spec ASTM A706 you can weld it. We often spec this for major prefab mats so you can weld it an make construction much easier.
Love your stuff, but man does this look overbuilt
I don't understand the what the trench across the driveway is going to be for. 🤷
If you’re gonna build a big gate, don’t put a masterlock on it
peace of mind is worth more than $15 bucks
What's wrong with having deer in the garden? Don't you want some venison to go with those veggies?
I thought that was what the veggies were for. Dear bait. Does he actually eat them himself?
Those stupid backhoe loaders were never a thing in Europe. Here there have always been mini-excavators and wheel loade
Well now that you have retired, people leave you alone..Now you can really get some work done..Lol
if you 2x the speed, he kinda sounds like ben shapiro
EC seems off
Not to take away from your hard work. Those uprights should have longer legs and under your bottom mat. Carpenters can't rebar. It's not just you 😊.
I for one would like to apologize on behalf of the yahoo's that encroached on your property. I'm assuming they're lookie-loos from CZcams (that aren't the deer), and it's sad that people think that it's okay to do that. You're not running a business like South Main Auto or something like that where you have an actual shop open to the public. Ugh, I hate people sometimes.
