- The name ‘Quattro’ has been synonymous with rally and ski communities since the early 80’s. On the world stage, Audi changed rallying history forever when they developed the Quattro driveline.
When Stig Blomqvist claimed the driver and manufacturer world rally titles in 1984 for Audi, it rendered rear-wheel-drive obsolete in competition, and opened up a new future for the Quattro driveline on a consumer level. Audi marketed heavily to outdoor adventure enthusiasts, so growing up, Ryan lusted after the adventure car with four circles on the grille.
The Audi 4000 Quattro was the test mule for their all-wheel-drive platform. Ryan takes a trip down memory lane, driving a stock 1986 4000CS on a snowy day. The Quattro easily plows through the rough road conditions to a secret parking spot where Ryan accesses his favorite mogul runs.
But it’s not just all historic Audi in this one. The Quattro platform is still alive and well, and robust enough to handle some modern power. Ryan drives a proper Audi 80 Rally Car recently imported from Latvia. It’s secret: There’s a 1998 A8 V8 motor under the hood and, boy, does it rip the gravel roads!

Once he opened the hood on Cheeto it was nostalgic for me. First car in high school was a 1998 A8 Quattro 4.2. Best car I’ve ever driven. Spent my whole summer in 2014 with my dad getting it running cherry. I took it up the mountains in the snow and it handled amazingly. The car would grip every turn and you’d just want to slam the gas pedal to the floor. Such an awesome video.
1998 A8 4.2 was my 2nd car in high school fun amazing car and 4 years after selling it, it showed up to my shop today, but I do love my current b8.5 S4 with the Sport Diff❤️

3:50 ‘ after introduction of 4wheel drive, no 2wheel drive car won the drivers or constructors championship ‘..... Audi won the constructors in 1982, but Lancia won it in 1983 with the 2wheel drive Lancia Rally 037 !
Yes, also Walter Röhrl, who was driving for Lancia at the time, didnt want to win the championship, nor did he want to drive in certain rallys. lol. And they won anyways.

You're misinterpreting the quote, which I guess I coulda written a little better. What I said was that after Audi took and manufacturers and drivers titles twice, there would never be another 2WD rally car to win the world championship. They completed winning two titles in the 1984 season... after the battle with Lancia's 037. But I'm very much aware of the 037 Quattro battle of '83.

My first memory of the Quattro was that of Michele Mouton winning the Acropolis Rally. I was a little kid. Excellent.

What a video! As an owner of various classic Audis I was surprised to see the 4000 getting love from Hagerty! One small little nitpick, Audi had the engines that far forward for years in the 70s with everything fwd. It wasn't the quattro that made them put it forward, it was like that all along. The 5 cyl just stuck out more than the 4s they mainly used previously.
Hmm yeah that's interesting. I've never seen a FWD 4000, but that makes sense that the axles would be in a similar location therefore not chaining motor location much.
Just look at a GT coupe, or B1
They more or less just added a center diff to the fwd gearbox and keept everthing else in the same location.
I loved watching rally races. They reminded me of racing on my ol' country roads. I learned about dirt tracking and handling in a pickup truck and a VW bug. So much fun running full out on those roads and learning the way to keep it on the road. Some roads were dirt roads and the others were gravel roads. Best fun i ever had on a country road:)

My buddy had the Quattro, I had the Civic Si with snow tires only on the front tires
(bad idea folks, 360 on the highway after a wind gust blew out my rear end)
You only truly understand the magic of that drivetrain if you drive them. Hands down the most fun AWD car I have ever driven. The locking diffs just make it perfect to flick and put the power down!

Absolute bro move that the owner let his car get driven hard and filmed. That way the rest of of us can watch in amazement. That V8 brings the power up to where it needs to be. The 4000/80 quattro has legend status.

Great video. I worked at a local Porsche/Audi store in the Boston area in the mid 80s and loved driving all of the Quattros - 4000, 5000 and Coupe. I was an avid New England skier, and I must admit I wore a jacket not dissimilar to Ryan's while hitting the slopes at Loon, Waterville Valley, Cannon and Mr. Snow. Fast forward 20 years and I found myself on the West Coast co-driving a wild Ur Quattro in a few local SCCA Pro Rally events and driving a modern A4 Quattro in some road races, including one through the streets of Los Angeles.
Having grown up in Colorado in the 70s and 80s I remember these Quattros like no other car. Especially the pearl white one. Heaven it was.

We did not have Audi 4000s in Latvia, but we did have the basically identical Audi 90 (b2) and so did my father for 8 years from when i was 6 years old. Oh how i loved that 2.2 5cylinder, that sound and my father liked driving it dynamicly. You can probably imagine my 6 year old little self hyping about the car .

Man di u bring memories, the first tine I ever saw an audi was in 1980 and it was a hatch back quatro coloured red, I was 15 it was a hot summer afternoon in the eastern part of Saudi Arabia,,,it's like it's only yesterday.

Just saw this vid today. My dad had an ‘85 4000 S quattro - which then became my 1st car. I loved that car. The engine was really torquey. I lived in a rural area. You could let the clutch out (slowly) and the car would drive UPHILL on idle. Great car and I’m glad to see one in such good condition still.

I had an 87. For the time it went as fast as most other cars. Never had a problem with the engine. It sure was a fun car. 👍😉

Yeah Constantine is right here, the 4000CS had 115 but this one is probably is a little worn. So I'd like to see what it puts out at the wheels this stage in its life.

Yeah that's me driving! This thing was an absolute dream to drive. Super well setup... actually the rear was too soft, but they're working on that. But everything else was solid and the tires we brand new soft compounds. So it directed well and was super predictable.
The cornering was great and the entrances to cornera were inch perfect. I enjoy all your videos, thank you!

Miss my 4000 cs Quattro. That was a solid ride
I had a VW Quantum Wagon Syncro. It had an Audi drive train, 5 Cylinder 5 Speed.
That car would go through anything. It was amazing.
I wanted one of those but could only find the base model front driver with the 1.8 liter four. But I had an '87 VW GLi at the same time with essentially the same motor (102 hp 2-valve motor). The VW felt a lot quicker than the Audi but the Audi was more comfortable. Both were pretty good snow cars.
Earlier VW's are great snow cars with the right tire!
My first Audi was a 1986 coupe gt and my dad had the 4000 both fwd. Then I went to the 1991 V8 3.6, 2001 A6 V8 4.2, 2008 A6 V8 and currently have a 455hp S4 and S5 sportback.
