  • This was a standard rebuild on an existing engine platform with no additional modifi cations for power. The primary consideration was reliability and clean running. When we originally received this engine for rebuil (we have done it twice now over a period of years), it had broken the timing gears so we didn't have a baseline dyno run. After the fi rst rebuild, it was run on a chas- sis dyno (our original DTS engine dyno couldn't handle the quick rpm changes) and produced 289 HP @ 9000 rpm. After the second rebuild (re-fresh), we ran it on our new Superfl ow Powermark dyno and saw a defi nite improvement (365 HP @ 9,800). Most of the improvement was due to fuel curve tuning on the Lucas mechani- cal injection system and ignition optimiza- tion. While not the most powerful vintage F1 engine, it has been very reliable and smooth.

    Nice flat torque curve and good power given the revs used. As stated probably enduro tune given 10k rev ceiling. F1 spec had higher limit in 12:5k range, which would be 480-500 bop, Ford Cosworth DFV topped out at 10,5 x 10:8k and was typically 430-450 bhp, but ferrari flat twelve always had the edge on power during the 70’s.

      Back in 1972 my first time to USGP at Watkins Glen. I was surprised to learn that after Friday practice and Saturday qualifying. You could walk through the garage and watch the mechanics work on the machinery. Like touring a horse stable.Cars on both sides of the center aisle. No privacy between teams just 5’ partitions Tyrrell, Lotus, Ensign,Ligier Ferrari, Renault. When a team started one of the cars there was a big push to get to that end of the garage .If they didn’t have too much going on, language permitting, the mechanics would engage in small talk with the assembled fans. After Saturday’s session while having spaghetti at a local Italian restaurant COLONIAL I think .My wife says look there,the reserved table we were curious about ,was held every year for the Ferrari mechanics Now entering the restaurant End of story ,could go on for hours

    • @droceretik
      @droceretik Před 8 lety

      +Mats Andersen What was the expected output? Who expected it? How do you come to the conclusion that the dyno is inaccurate? 122 hp/litre. I think that is very good for an early 70's F1 naturally aspirated engine. Read the FULL introduction and you may change your views.

    • @matsandersen78
      @matsandersen78 Před 8 lety

      Maybe youre right. I just based my comment at the claimed output on these when new. But this was perhaps on more revs, different fuel and more radical level of tune:-)

    • @matsandersen78
      @matsandersen78 Před 8 lety

      +droceretik
      I did read the intro, and I did not state that the dyno was wrong, I suggested it could be.
      Thinking about it 122 bph pr litre is not very much for any high reving race engine, even for a modified production engine that is modified for racing.
      We get 207-210hp pr litre when we modify for example the late 1950's Alfa Romeo design 8 valve road engine. We only pull them to 8000rpm to achive this and use regular "pump gas". There are many built in "faults" or shortcomings in that engine that should not be the case in this F1 engine. Its has better geometry, mroe valves, better combustion chamber, higher octane fuel and all over designed with a purpose to go racing, hence overall tune /exhaust/intake developed for maximin efficiency at a certain rpm range.
      I just think 365hp seems like not as much as it could have been. But the project is still cool and I love it:-)
