  • A legendary figure in music history, Larry Graham enters the 2013 Rock and Soul SuperJam picture like a ton of bricks. He's revered by the rest of the all-star band but also an intimidating figure with a strong vision. As a founding member of Sly and the Family Stone, Larry redefined funk bass playing and helped revolutionize ensemble singing in pop music. The plan for Larry's portion of the show was a group singalong with everyone onstage contributing vocals to classic songs such as "Hot Fun In The Summertime" and "Thank You (Falettinme Be Mice Agin)". Will this be the highlight of the set as Jim James and John Oates had envisioned or a train wreck that will derail the SuperJam?
The Bonnaroo Music & Arts Festival is four of the best days ever. 80,000 happy campers. 700 acres of Tennessee nature. 150 epic performances. 10+ stages of music. Several dozen comedians. An escape into excitement. Music. Art. Discoveries.

@bonnaroo Love how Larry shows up and immediately he's got band members running laps with tambourines in their hands. Clearly a meticulous guy which I respect. This guy is protecting the legacy of his art.

OK, as no one else is asking...why is Jim James wearing a towel on his head? :) I know it gets hot up there; I have played many gigs on a well-lighted stage (and it DOES get hot), but I don't wear a towel, just wipe off between songs...how very odd...:)

"Aaaaww, AAHHH, Wwoohh, wWOWw" said everyone else with their earplugs in, and their rose coloured (... NOT like ROSE Stewart though !) glasses on all fogged up from HYPE !! BUT not this ronin : I say this is a cluttered, directionless W*#K-fest resulting in an appalling noise, and a sickeningly CHEAP vibe, typical of where music and the world is heading, and has been for at LEAST two decades. Think we're all that easily fooled do y'all? Think again. Drummer couldn't hold a candle to Greg Errico's groove, feel, and TIME (you right ol chap? with the metronome are ya?), singer sounds like she should be awesome but is so busy overdoing it she spoiled her chance at improving the sitch, Oates : whatever man, the rest : Blah, blah, bleh, bleat, baah etc. I've heard professional cover bands SH*T all over this standard on a regular basis (... back in the day when that was the idea), AND I've played in some too folks!. Want a reference for what I'm talking about, so you can all wrap your heads around professional standard? Try checking out ,'SUPERMARKET', Aussie band from Sydney whose reputation preceded them, thanks to the expert efforts of members such as Barry Leef & Erana Clarke (vocals), Victor Rounds (bass), Russell Dunlop (drums), Jim Kelly (guitar), and the late, great, Michael Joseph Kenny (Keyboards and arrangements), as well as a host of thoroughly professional brass players who sounded like a SECTION, lo and behold! ... But NO - here's THIS lot staggering their way through basic rehearsal manouvres, and talking about it all like it's a trip to outer space, both in terms of how 'tricky' it all apparently was to ROTE LEARN 50+ year old arrangements that are FAMOUS as sh#t, and also what legends they are for pulling it all off. OMG.
And what of our main ol' man, - the one that even the other members of the ACTUAL band he's famous for (or should I say FROM ...) being in said was the dodgy member who tried to take undue credit and was happy to pull the little personally motivated sidescams at the expense of the rest of the band? Hhmmm? Well, he's so "locked-in to his arrangements" that he couldn't be budged, and yet, after these 'gruelling' rehearsal sessions, the word is "we don't know what's actually gonna happen when we go to actually perform" !!! WTF?!?!? So ... DID ol' Laz actually manage to convey the arrangements that he's just so part of or NOT? Did you drongo's actually listen (either to Larry, or just the freakin CD ...) and learn them, or NOT? Or, hang on, is it that y'all are such masterful improvisers, and such free 'artistes' that you're just so damn default-ready to go anywhere from here to the ends of the universe with, oh ... some really WELL known, 5 minute ... SONGS ? Sounds like preacher Larry's sermon didn't reach it's mark to me, - but no surprise, since he's now a good conservative JW, and they don't do 'sermons', just 'talks', and that's all it ALL was - just talk ... No PLAYING, just TALK !! And all THAT, while THE man, the REAL man, the ONLY MAN that THIS music can be boiled down to (... you know, Mr Sylvester Stewart AKA SLY STONE ffs!) is NOWHERE in sight, OR SOUND, because he's toughing it out in a motorhome as his permanant address, having been ripped off and punished financially for his troubles of conceptualising, crafting, and spearheading this music (... you know, only that stuff called 'FUNK' ...), while 'brother' Larry grins and plays his old lines as half-baked and ordinarily as he likes now, when some cat you never heard of could Fender him off the stage at the drop of his big ol' hat ( and don't try the "he IS getting old, you know?" crap - you hear Pharoah Sanders last year? Or Harold Mabern? Or McCoy Tyner? Remember Elvin Jones & Max Roach in their 'old-age' - Just to pull some ageing masters who have a bit more to handle than four strings, out of the air? - It's about the EFFORT ... the ENERGY, specifically, the effort and energy of THIS performance which has been so 'effortlessly' and thoughtlessly lauded in the comments here).
So NAH, y'all are entitled to your opinions, and I'm entitled to MINE, that is regarding what I just cringed all the way through HEARING and WATCHING, as well as what, I just cringed and shook my head in disbelief all the way through READING. My opinion is firmly that : " Y'all have PERFECT ears - there's NO HOLES in 'em at all !!! [C/ Mick Kenny].
Power to ya Sly my man!! Also to Rose, Freddy, Cynthia, Greg, and Jerry! ... And, I guess, you too, Larry, coz you need some bruz, you truly need some!
    - JazzWarrior - ... musical ronin : No ties, no lies, stayin' wise while the real world dies ...
