  • Today’s tip video comes from a question asked by Thad.
Thad asked, “Do you have any tips or tricks you can share in using a stitch groover? I’ve messed up more than one piece of work with a wayward stitch groove.”
This is a great question as I’ve definitely shared the same frustrations. In this video I’ll show a few tricks that have helped me execute accurate stitch grooves.
If you enjoy fundamental tips that help you save time and money wasted in costly mistakes, you will find plenty of them all together in “Leather Shop Basics”. This is one of my online courses. For more information or to get registered, follow the link below.

Great video! Something, among others, that I have struggled with... but a quality blade solved most of my stitching groove issues. Next, when I can afford it, a quality swivel knife blade. I have so many issues, as an old, arthritic, rookie, that I'll keep watching. Thanks for these videos!

Joe, I never wait until the end of the project to groove the edge. I would rather waste a piece of leather than do all the tooling like your example just to have the edger jump off the leather. That would be very aggravating to the point of giving up leather work. There is a lot of work just in doing the design and tooling it. My suggestion to your viewers is to always groove the leather first. Best regards, Richard

Very helpful video on the correct use of these tools. I started doing leatherwork years ago, the results being questionable ( more like ‘train wreck’). Thank you for posting!

If you’re like me and have trouble with the corners meeting nicely, take the guide off and use the groover like a scribe. That might give you more control in that area.

This might be a dumb question but, my stitch groover is dull and won’t cut worth a darn. It has the guide and the tiny hole that cuts must be dull. I only used it a few times. Looks just like the one you used but who knows what the brand or quality is. Thanks

How does one sharpen this tool Joe? That's a mighty tiny hole there.

I get a groove, but i do not get a strip out like you are. What am i doing wrong? I have it angled, decent pressure, straight groove, but no little strip removed.

What types of leather can you use the Groover on?

Mine has never worked decently even though it has only been used a couple times.
