It's said The Lone Bellow's history goes all the way back to a Park Slope, Brooklyn diner meetup in the early 2010s. The trio, comprised of singer/guitarist Brian Elmquist, lead singer/guitarist Zach Williams and multi-instrumentalist Kanene Donehy Pipkin definitely made an early mark around New York, especially at Rockwood Music Hall, a venue known for championing the best of the little guys, and the site where they recorded their 2013 debut album. But with bright harmonies and rootsy passion, Southern flair is part of their identity, and three years ago the trio uprooted to Nashville. Both in lyrical theme and sonic texture, their new ‘Half Moon Light’ album resounds with such forward progression. Recorded with Aaron Dessner of The National, the album tackles everything from the failures of contemporary society (“Illegal Immigrant” is a tale of the tragedy at the U.S./Mexico border) to the devastating loss of a parent. The band returned to NYC for a romp in our Times Square studio, turning in a fantastic performance of “Good Times," and proving they’ve never sounded better.
