Like a fine wine, The Lone Bellow is getting better with age. The folk trio comprised of Brian Elmquist (guitars/vox), Zach Williams (lead vox/guitar) and Kanene Donehy Pipkin (multi-instrumentalist/vox) have roots in Brooklyn. Legend has it TLB’s history traces all the way back to a Park Slope diner meetup in the early 2010s. Rockwood Music Hall, the venue renowned for championing the best of the little guys, was the site where they recorded their heralded debut album. But Southern flair pervades their identity, too. So much so that they uprooted to Nashville a little while back. Both in lyrical theme and sonic texture, ‘Half Moon Light’ is a celebration of such forward progression. Recorded with Aaron Dessner of The National, the album tackles everything from present societal failures - “Illegal Immigrant” is a humanistic tale of the tragedy at the U.S./Mexico border - to the personal wounds of a father’s death. In the studio, the trio turned in fantastic performances of “Wonder” and “Good Times," proving they’ve never been better.
