If you have installed an outlet with USB A or USB C integrated ports you might have been underwhelmed by how long it took to charge your phone. After a few comments on past videos and some investigation, I decided to get the Leviton 5635 which promised some pretty impressive specs. A bit skeptical I wanted to install the outlet and test the charge rate with my USB multimeter to compare against past installs. Overall I like what I am seeing!

There's a new Leviton now going up to 60W - T5636-W can probably do even more than this one. (563-6 instead of the 563-5) anyway this is by far one of the best outlet videos for this that I have seen! I think since everything is going to USB-c, adding these in key areas will reduce searching for adapters, or even buying adapters. Keep the adapters for the car and travel!
I've installed two of these in my house and I've gotten similar results with iPhone, iPad and Samsung phones. It is definitely worth the money and time.

This was a good test. I have at least 2 USB A outlets in each room and considering upgrading them to USB C. I use them so the grandkids are only plugging into a low voltage outlet vs a charging having to plug into 120volts. I still remember when I was a kid and touched both prongs on a plug about 60 years ago.

I purchased and installed the Leviton USB outlet, and it definitely charges my iPad faster!
The only thing I think you missed about this outlet, is that it can't do PD/fast charge when there are two devices plugged in, because it's limited to 30W total. If you read the product insert, it explains that when two devices are connected, they will both operate at 5V/3A (max 15W) even if one or both devices support PD.
Good catch. I’m still going to install these in my house because of the convenience. Every room will have one.

One question you did not ask was how much power does this use when not in use?
When you initially pulled the old receptacle out, did you notice the in the back of the box there's bare wires exposed where they're spliced together feeding into the green insulating cap? But always great videos:)
Those are all the ground wires spliced together. Totally normal and is in almost every box if you are up to code.

I just bought the version with with 2 USB type A ports good to know it'll be worth the money though it wasn't $40 but it is this brand and fast charge capable
Any idea what the idle current draw in these is?
I would imagine the quiescent current would be completely negligible, even if it had an LED indicator to let you know it has power; likely in the sub-mA range. However, the active current draw for these outlets can go up to 15 or 20 amps depending on the style as well as the gauge of Romex and the rating of the circuit breaker powering the outlet.
Our 65 watt chargers for the laptops also do super fast (step up from the fast) charging for the Samsung, RavPower ~$20, but it is a plugin wall wart. They are the latest GAN tech. Several of our cameras require 2.5 amps for full function at 12v. There's so many devices.....power banks &c. A nice feature that is often overlooked is if the charger has a low power feature that does not shut off with a tiny load. A shame that the built in does not support super fast charging on Samsung, just the fast charging, but it may not be a big difference.

Normally I can trust Leviton for sockets that don’t fall out after a while, but Joe Homeowner adding a bunch of circuitry inside a plastic outlet box that might be getting moist along an exterior wall, behind a wall plate covered by some bed linens where nobody can observe it over the life of a home makes me wonder why any home insurance company would tolerate these
How much power does the outlet consume when not plugged into a device? Both with and without the USB cord plugged in.
At least with a wall wart, you can unplug it.

I did this test and with a Kill A Watt meter it showed 0.00 amp and 0.00 watts.
Question will using the electric outlets at the same time as a USB C affect charge time on UsBC outlet?

Would it not be better to have the 15 v at 2 amp? Is it not the v.a that counts but more the number of amps?
Does the multimeter test the usb port to determine if i works, or can you tell me how to test a usb port. Currently I have a very similar receptacle, and the usb no longer works, yet the receptacle does
As someone who likes the idea of upgrades and not needing the charging blocks, it seems like it's the law of diminishing returns: First, we needed the charging blocks and those were USB A. Apple went from the large 30 pin to the lightning port, which... they are still at in 2021 and it's slow data transfer rate. Now, we have the USB C to lightning port or USB C to USB mini.
Bottom line: I'm fed up with changing my cables- all sorts of lengths and ends to keep up with this supposed change in technology cables. Can't the industry just move to USB C all around on both ends like they do with HDMI? At this point, Imma just stick with my USB A ports, which are charging my phone while I sleep (for more than 180 minutes) and be done in the morning.

In our house, phone recharging occurs in two locations. The kitchen and the bedside table(s). So not worth $80 - $120 (two bedside tables).
p.s. I am jealous that your electrical box is flush with the drywall all the way around. I have replaced every receptacle, every light switch and most ceiling lights in my home and not once did I find a box and wall fit as shown in this video.

I want to add one to a duel outlet. I bought this one and it is two wide, I noticed all the newer outlets have plastic cover over the entire back now. the old one I removed is much narrower and the space is not wide enough to add a new outlet in the dual box. I thought things were suppose to get smaller not larger.
If you put that on your kitchen counter, would you have a GFCI on the daisy chain to prevent shock re: kitchen sink/dishwasher?
Yes, a GFCI would need to be first on the circuit and then this USB outlet coming of the “Line” screw terminals of the GFCI.
the building cod says under one meter from the faucet or water source.
I purchased something similar from home depot and I seem to be blowing up a lot of the charger adapters connected to the receptacle.
They seem to all get very hot and then they quit working

I bought this same outlet but I don't see how to if I can make one of the plugs controlled by a switch. Is that possible? The outlet I replaced had that functionality and I don't know if or how to make that happen with the 5635.
I am not a fan of integrated USB chargers, and this one is no exception. It may be better than most integrated chargers but that is a very very very low bar. It can deliver 30W PD. This outlet does not provide Qualcomm QC2 or QC3, and for a PD outlet it's not that impressive at 30W where PD chargers are available up to 100W, and QC2 and 3 are widespread. My approach is ALWAYS to use a cube charger that is best suited to the device I'm charging. They are almost always faster than anything built in to any wall, table, or car dashboard and they are extremely adaptable (being adapters) in that they can plug in to ANY wall outlet.

a 45W or 60W version would be nice, then you could charge many newer laptops from it. i wouldn't want to be the guy who had to work out the thermal design though
Probably makes sense for charging high-current devices fast, like a laptop. However, if you've got a lot of USB-C devices, a couple of these receptacle can cut down on chargers that are carried around a home. If I'm charging 4 devices, that's 4 charging adapters that I don't have to carry around (just the USB-C cables).
It depends on the application. I have a mix of charger receptacles (including the T-5635) and plug-in style chargers in my house. The built-in ones are useful for cases where you don't want to tie up an outlet or when plugging in cords behind furniture where there are space constraints.
I’ll be making a video soon but basically I tested the Leviton USBC unit versus the Eaton USBC unit and the Leviton did 27.8 watts (14.8volts 1.88amps) charging at the USBC cord drawing 31.1 watts from wall. The Eaton did 14.22 watts (5.04v 2.84amps) at USBC cord and 17.6 watts from the wall.
Questions about box fill. How much are these considered to occupy? I know a standard outlet counts for two conductors in a box, but this is significantly larger than a standard outlet. I've already been installing these and calculating the box fill as though they are a 1 1/2" GFCI rather than using the standard method. Is this correct, or is there a better way to go about solving that issue?
As to what I use, I've slowly been installing Leviton T5632 USB type "A"s throughout the areas where it could be expected that devices need charging; bedrooms, living room, kitchen, dining room, etc. Any future installs I do will use something like the Leviton T5633/T5833s or Eaton TRUSBAC15/20s which are a type "A" & "C" combo unit. Type "C" is the way of the future, but having an outlet compatible with both types allows for greater flexibility, particularly when using legacy products.
Actually, is that something you would be willing do a deep dive into? How do charge times & temps compare between the USB "C" ports on the Leviton 5635 compared to the 5633? Same for the Eaton models? What about similar models between brands? Between different outlet amp ratings? What about when one (or both) wall outlets are in use? etc. Is this something you've already done to a great extent? If not, and you were willing, what could I as a viewer do to help (got a patreon?)

How come there are no “load” and “line” terminals? Is it safe to just connect all same color wires together to 2 terminals rather than the usual 4 terminals (2 top, 2 bottom when daisy chaining multiple outlets in room - or is that just for gfci?
It’s a nice feature however the outlet cannot replace all USB C style PD chargers. Also of note it only supports PD when one outlet is in use " Both ports connected to devices: 5VDC@3A (30W total power) " The PD 3.0 standard supports up to 100W so the outlet is not suited for devices like apple laptops or optimal for devices like the Galaxy S20 Ultra. It supported 45W PD charging however Samsung dropped the S21 back to “only” 25W max.
Good feedback Chad and I did confirm after another viewer commented that the voltage does drop as soon as another cable is plugged into the other USB C port. As soon as the other cord is connected my iPhone decreased down to pulling about 10W (5V @ 2Amps)
My outlet have 2 black wires and 1 red. When installing the USB receptical can I combined (wago) the 2 black wires and not use it and only use the Red wire as the power source . I want to be about to turn on/off outlet with the switch.

Hallo Scott. Love your site. Those Leviton and any device for charging is going to take up more room inside the box than usual. When you install the wall plate back on. That is going to prevent the device from curculating enough air thru the vent on the device to cool it enough. And see if you use both charging ports at the same time, will it divide the charging power. The component in you 20 watt charger are larger than it would be inside the Leviton recepticle. All the components are smaller in the Leviton, capasitor, resitors, diodes and resitors. That would change the charging power to it. I will always stay with the charger phone came with because as you would it was engineered to be like that. Thanks for all you Vids. Please let me know what you think of my opinoin.

Does the charge slow down or reduced if you connect both USB C connectors at the same time?
Also, does it get hotter by fully connect omg all connectors?
Good question and just tested it out to confirm and the output from each port does reduce to what looks like 10W for at least my iPhone as soon as another USB C cable is plugged in even if another phone isn't connected to the cable.
I bought one of these charger outlets but it’s to fat to fit in my existing box how do I make it fit ???
Will anyone ever sell these in 20A (NEMA 5-20R) versions? I understand that the USB power supply is considered a device on the same circuit but I still want the 5-20 rating/receptacle for my workbench.

Scott, I thought you recommended wrapping the back of the outlet with electrical tape, to cover the terminals.

Two things- Don't you need a GFCI on the kitchen counter and does the outlet always draw power?
You do if it's near a source of water. Depending on how big the kitchen is, it isn't necessary. Also if the outlet is daisy chained behind a GFCI or on a GFCI breaker, it apparently meets code in certain areas. My bathroom outlet is a standard, but daisy chained behind my kitchen GFCI. My home inspector said it meets electrical code here.
Like Joe outline, the one I am swapping is a "Load" daisy chained off a GFCI outlet.
It needs to be GFCI is it is closer than 59 inches from the sink. Also you can have two receptacles on a single kitchen circuit, so you could install this as the second of two if GFCI is required.

Outlets on kitchen countertops must be on small appliance circuits, which need to be 20 amp and can not be used for anything else including lights, which would mean using it for a bathroom would not be allowed. GFCI isn’t simply required near sources of water. All countertop outlets are required to be GFCI protected, no matter the distance from a sink and daisy chaining isn’t any less safe than spending $20 on each outlet.
@@orlandozoli while true, any outlet above a countertop must also be GFCI protected no matter what the distance from a sink, and code also requires a minimum amount of outlets on top of countertop space, meaning unless you don’t have any countertops you’ll have outlets which need to be GFCI protected even though they aren’t near a sink

A wireless charger, even positioned exactly right, will always be slower. And that can be a good thing, because it overheat your battery as badly as a plain charger, if you leave your phone to charge overnight.

These are just a standard charger, same as using an adaptor. If you want super fast, then simply use the adaptor in a regular outlet..

Makes sense, the USB C standard has a higher wattage allowance (potentially 100w) than earlier formats (USB3 was 7.5W)
The problem with the kitchen insulation is most of those are split plugs
I've only ever lived in one apartment that had split plugs in the kitchen. I think there was a time in the 80s where that was common, but it didn't stick around. Obviously where you live may be different.

The same issue i've seen with the USB-C is that its loose, wobbly. Not sure why every single one of these USB-C outlets were like that.

We had one of these installed and the usb-c port really heats up.
That's very impressive and would be most beneficial if you charge regularly in the same location. However, if you are mobile a lot of times, it's to your advantage to just carry the 20w with you.
I don't like these combo outlets. One is better off to use the power supply that came with the device, if they have it. If not, then buy one. Where the USB combo is useful is in a hospital where someone might have their phone, but not their charger. And hopefully there would be a cable in the gift shop, because unless people are me, they're probably not carrying around a cable with them either. Also a separate box in the wall for USB devices only is more ideal with the connections being made somewhere near the panel. Of course there needs to be outlets there, which is ideal to connect high watts bricks, to feed the USB connections in the box in the walls.
1:10 $40 for stationery outlets VS. about $20 for a movable plugin? No. No, it isn't worth it.
As someone who has three iPads, an Iphone 8, 2 Mac Minis, 2 Imacs, 2 MacBooks, an Ibook, Amazon devices, printers, game consoles, Nintendos, multiple device cable unpluggings all the time, it is worth it. I wouldn’t have to have all these charging bricks floating around oh I forgot about the iPods, add my windows 10 laptop and 3 of my 6 Apple ][ computer, I go nuts with all the power bricks & having to connect and disconnect the cables when I move around the room.
I wish I knew how to just install an iPad in the wall so I wouldn’t have to keep carrying one from room to room because this place is really old if it were my place and tear all the wiring out and put all new wiring.
I bet you $20 that in 10 years one of these things items will have gone missing, while the other one will be screwed to the wall. It’s also nice to be able to have a bedside lamp, radio alarm clock and digital device of your choosing all plugged in at the same time.

Wall outlets with USB have only been around for 7 years, not 'forever'. May 13, 2014 was the first mention of them. They were first devised in Japan (because, of course it was Japan lol) by Panasonic.
yes the size is just too big so will not fit in the box not just the deep put also the width. so it is useless unless you change the box
I am a person that charge my phone over night, so i do not think it would be worth the $40.00 to me but thinks for the info because i do some work for friends.
For the cost, I'll stick with a charging block. More convenient and I can then charge other usb things that aren't always usb C.

I have some suggestions to do some videos on solar power and the inverters to integrate them into the home when I was a kid the introduced solar power ever since then I have been addicted to that concept.
It better to use a Samsung phone to see I'd it kicks on the Super Fast or Fast Charging mode.

@@EverydayHomeRepairs iPhones are nice but they don't show an indication that the charging is fast or not. The fastest Samsung Charger will show an indication for Super Fast 2.0, which is currently the fastest Samsung will do.
There's a case to be made, not to put electronics in the wall. The charging standard is not yet fixed and can be upgraded anytime in the future, and putting this into the wall increases the risk of obsolescence or failure, and then someone will need to change it. Unless you really can't stand the look of a charger, it's much better to use an external charger, so upgrading to future improvements is painless.
I disagree. With this outlet in the kitchen you could keep your microwave and another item plugged in as well as your phone cord. Especially if the outlet is behind the microwave and makes it difficult to get to.

These expensive gimmicks are guaranteed to be obsolete in a couple years. Meanwhile there are 90 year old houses with the original outlets still working just fine.
Not sure they are gimmicks but you are correct that the standards will continue to change and replacing this one with the latest and greatest in 3-5 years is a real possibility.

I'm confused why the leviton USB outlet is faster? If your cellphone doesn't have fast charging the leviton USB won't work because your cellphone has to have fast charging?
Yep, if your cellphone doesn’t have Fast Charging (PD or QC) then the charge time results will most likely be similar across everything except the wireless charger from Legrand.

Some Android phones are very finicky about the quality of charge going in, and a lot of third-party chargers can be problematic.
This unit suck not only are the unsafe but they short out and they have a lot of standby usage I've tested ones from China no name and I got better results long term
They need one with both USB and type C combo

I agree, charging times for devices are usually calculated assuming the time it takes to recharge the battery to 100%.
