  • This amazing dish would be considered main meal. :) It is filling and so delicious! Unique flavor you won't be able to resist. :) I didn't mention in the vide, but you can use any plums, not only Italian plums. :)

    Thanks for sharing this, czechcookbook 💐 My Czech mother makes these with free-stone peaches 🍑 She serves them with crushed ginger snap cookies, sugar & melted butter. Heavenly

    Same recipe as my grandma made (which is probably her grandma's recipe), but instead of the poppy seed topping she would serve with melted butter and brown sugar with cottage cheese for the side dish. The next morning my grandfather liked them cut up and browned in butter with a sprinkle of brown sugar...

    Thanks for the recipe. My grandmother made them frequently. Typically with the sugar cube inside the plum. I had to look up what the coarse flour is called in english I believe it is called semolina.

    • @czechcookbook
      @czechcookbook  Před rokem +1

      Not really. In USA coarse brand of the flour is Wondra. Which is perfect for dumplings. In other nations it is different brand.

    My great grandmother made peach dumplings. I was very young so I don't remember them well, but this seems very much like them (my mother did say it was a potato dumpling recipe). She didn't use poppy seeds... I think she fried the cooked dumplings in butter and sprinkled them with cinnamon sugar. I can't wait to try this! thanks so much for your recipes!

      Good idea :D I forgot to mention that growing up we would also leave the pits inside. I think mostly because those plums were pretty small. :)

    That looks so good! I love your videos. My great-grandparents came to the US. My other taught me to make plum dumplings the way her family made them. I've never had them with poppyseeds. But, poppyseeds make everything even better, don't they?
    Our family used the blue plums that grew in grandma's back yard. Regular big blue plums. We did not remove the pits before cooking. After they are cooked, you can cut into them with a spoon and the pit scoops right out. We also added farina (cream of wheat) to the dough, maybe because we had a lot, and maybe because the flour we used was just "all-purpose" flour. After cooking, we put in a bowl, cut into it and took out the pit, added a pat of butter, sprinkled it with cinnamon and sugar. Yum. We usually had as a meal for breakfast.
    I will definitely try this with the poppyseed topping!

      Thank you :) It is so delicious with poppyseeds. :) Growing up we actually also never removed pits. I forgot to mention that. They easily popped out on the plate. :) It sounds delicious with cinnamon and sugar. :)

    • @czechcookbook
      @czechcookbook  Před 3 lety +4

      Yes the same recipe would work for smoked meat. :) I would just add little more salt into the dough. Topped with sauerkraut sauce and fried onions as you most likely know. :) So delicious! I will definitely have this recipe in the future.

    Would I use prunes in the US?

    • @czechcookbook
      @czechcookbook  Před 2 lety

      You can but sometimes you can find Italian plums which are more traditional.

    • @Calucifer13
      @Calucifer13 Před rokem +1

      I am Czech and there are no rules for which fruit you must use, but it shouldn't be liquid like watermelon but solid like pears, apples plums, whatever. The most classic ones are apricot dumplings though, and then strawberry dumplings, plum dumplings and blueberry dumplings. Depends on the district. I am from Pardubický kraj (Pardubice district) and we prefer apricots and strawberries here. You can put mango there too if you like, but it's not traditional. The topping should be either grated firm Italian-style cheese with sugar, grated quark with sugar, fried breadcrumbs with sugar or grated poppy seeds with sugar. In the end, you have to pour melted butter on it all, or you're gonna choke on the dumplings. The butter makes every dumpling slippery and possible to swallow. Otherwise it gets stuck in your throat. You don't wanna choke on your food.
