I always vacuum last EXCEPT in the bathrooms; vacuum first, otherwise when water gets on the floor tile while rinsing out bathtub, shower stall, etc. you might have a gooey mess of hair, pet fur, and dust which sticks to the vacuum and causes more work. Thank you for all your tips!

While all of this is great advice, hopefully people understand that dust is INEVITABLE. You will *NEVER* have a fuilly clean spotless house... never! So don't stress so much about dust, its a part of life and we have immune systems for a reason. Do sufficient cleaning so its not horrible or smelly etc, but worrying about every spec of dust will just drive you insane.

I've been binging on your videos for the last 2 days! I can't thank you enough for this channel and all of the detail you put into your uploads! I got married last year and moved in with my husband who owns a 111 year old home. I lived with my parents up until I was married so entering a home that I needed to keep clean on a daily basis was extremely overwhelming. I've been there almost a year now and feel like I'm finally getting a handle on everything. These videos have been so inspiring over the last couple days and have given me the push to clean the places I haven't been able to get to yet. THANK YOU!

I am absolutely convinced that dusting should be done with a damp microfiber. I rinse the cloth out and squeeze the water out to dust everything.
Otherwise, the dry microfiber kicks most of the dust into the air. Just dust where a sun beam is streaming in your window and you’ll see it. The damp cloth catches it all.

    • @Plethorality
      @Plethorality Před 2 lety +21

i wipe with a slightly damp cloth, then, if its really humid, i wipe it dry.
sometimes i use a feather duster, but only for fragile things in particular areas. not in general grotsville sections.

I prefer watching this CZcams channel than Andrea Jean Cleaning channel. Keep it up. I’ve been watching Melissa since 2012 or 2013. First video I watched of hers was when I was house sitting my grandparents house and I had a pot overflowing on my grandparents glass top stove. My grandmother is a neat freak. You grab a dish and you use it and you wash it. It does not sit in the sink waiting to be washed. So whatever I had in a pan was overflowing, it burned the stovetop and I panicked. I searched on CZcams how to fix this problem and I came across the clean my space channel. Melissa saved me from being in trouble. Thank you Melissa, you are a godsend.

Ok ok ok! I just tested out the microfiber cloth for dusting using the 8 part folding method and it worked great! I used to use the traditional dusters, which always grossed me out because they would always get super dirty. The microfiber cloth can easily be thrown in the washing machine. 😁 Another great part about the microfiber cloth is that I noticed a lot less dust flying thru the air when dusting lol
Btw cleaning from top to bottom is hard for me because old habits die hard.

vacuum cleaners are my passion! I will say that bagged vacuum cleaners are the best at containing dust and keep 99% of the dust out of the room with good ones. the good vacuum cleaners I highly recommend are all bagged but they are, Melie, Sebo, Riccar, Oreck and Kirby. you can use your vacuum cleaners for dusting and I do. I have a Kirby vacuum that has a gentle brush for dusting I don't dust with my vacuum all the time but I would say if you have a thick layer of dust, use your vacuum because you don't want to kick up that much dust. also its a good idea to use your vacuum to dust at least once a month to really clean out dust in your home. don't forget about your central heating and air system, that has lots of dust too. vacuum the vents every 6 months and change your filters at least once every 3 months

Hah, 17 cats and 4 dogs (one dog is a rescue foster) with all hardwood floors here. My “vacuum sandwich” is more of a “multilayer.” I vacuum, general clean/tidy & clean ceiling fan blades, vacuum again, get the battery Stihl blower from the garage and get stuff out from under the furniture, off the walls/dust collectors, vacuum again, then hit the walls with with a dry microfiber mop and microfiber furniture… then I vacuum cat towers individually and vacuum again….. then I damp mop the floor. The vacuum dumps of pet hair fill up half the trash can, the vacuums are cleaned after (cut out stuck pet hair on movables, and filters cleaned), and that’s every Sunday. Pro-tip: hit the clumps of pet hair you can see with the “wand” so they don’t have a chance to get stuck in the wheels. Really helps a lot. Again, with this many pets, I basically have to do it every Sunday. The kids rooms… that’s a battle because the whole upstairs is carpeted and it’s difficult to get them to clean well enough for me to shampoo and reduce the dust trapped in the carpet once a month or so. Edit: I have a background including hazmat incident response and remediation (including planning for radioisotope clean up) so I go a little overboard, but if I don’t with a couple of weeks of only vacuuming, the wife and kids are complaining of allergies and other respiratory issues. Also, thankfully, all of my intake vents to the HVAC are up higher (none on the floor) so my high merv filters usually still last 4-5 months with all that cleaning. Also, I have two roombas running daily, hah!

Hi ! I love watching your videos on cleaning to laundry etc. You sold me on the Dyson V8 Absolute vacuum and I have to say it was money well spent, thank you . I also bought quite a few of your microfiber cloths, which I absolutely love. My question is when using the vacuum is it necessary to clean the filters after every use ? I know that may sound like a dumb question, but this is my first time ever owning a Dyson, I have always wanted one, but they were so pricey, and I found myself in a position where I could finally afford one. Thank you so much for your videos and I have found that I have been doing some things wrong when it comes to cleaning.

I use to work for 5 star hotel, I was teached to have a damp cloth to dust always.
Using dry cloth is just moving the dust around into air.
The moisture in cloth makes the dust to stick to it totally makes sense.

The purpose of water is to trap some of the dust in a fabric (like cotton) that isn't capable of efficiently trapping dust on its own. You don't need water at all when you use a microfiber terry cloth rag because it traps more dust even without water. It doesn't just kick dust up like a dry cotton rag does. By avoiding water, you also avoid the side-effect of it, which is a dust slurry that can get left behind when you use a damp cloth. Also, by using microfiber you avoid leaving behind lint from your cleaning rag. So you're right if you are comparing a dry cotton rag with a damp cotton rag, but not when you are comparing a dry microfiber terry cloth rag with a wet cotton rag, for example.

I cleaned my vacuum about a year ago, I believe, because it was threatening me saying it needed to be done. ^.^; Clearly, I should make this more of a regular maintenace thing. Thanks for all the tips. While most of this it seems my mom taught me right, I did learn a bit more from you. I look forward to checking out more of your videos.:-D

Yes! A dry microfiber cloth to wipe the dust first, and then go over a second time with a damp microfiber cloth.

We clean our vacuums before spring cleaning, after spring cleaning, fall cleaning, after Christmas and any other time they need it.
By “we” I mean my husband cleans them - I write the task on his chore list and he happily takes them apart to clean all of the filters, brushes, etc.. I vacuum and he maintains our equipment. 😍
