Some unsolicited recommendations for improvements. 1. Use D-60’s. Closer to the original Lewis Gun capacity. Way more reliable. 2. Use a longer barrel 20-24” HBAR or whatever profile will be compatible with the JP cooling fins. 3. Build a barrel shroud that serves as the handguard AND the barrel nut similar to the design of the KAC URX4 Rail, but with the Lewis Gun’s appearance. 4. Use a surplus KAC flip up 600M Rear BUIS as it will go a long way towards completing the Lewis Guns aesthetic. 5. Where the the gas block attaches to the barrel have an MLOK slot cut so you can easily remove the gas block and gas tube for install/disassembly. 6. Use actual MLOK slots or 1913 rails where you want to attach the front sight and bipod.
It’s a coffee table conversation piece with a secondary use for mowing down scarecrows and zombies. RE: Assault or Support. Both, just depends if Russian or USA fighting doctrine.
This is by far the coolest thing I have seen on a CZcams gun channel this year so far. If these were to go on sale in the commercial market. I would be in the Q to buy one
I think you may be a little off on your design. From what I've seen on CZcams there was a silencer company that used the same concept in their design and in showed the heat transfer and cooling increased the more rapidly the gun was fired. However, I think what you're doing here is a great example of ingenuity and inventiveness. Although you make me scratch my head sometimes at your designs, I have to give credit where credit is due, you are really showcasing what can be done with 3D printing and modifying.
Well… yeah. Both series straight up copied or modified historical firearms for their aesthetic, with Star wars using originals cut up and modded in the original movies. Hell, Fo4 copied some guy’s homebuild on an obscure forum a decade ago (the shovel AK) for their raider AK copy.
It doesn't create a vacuum behind it. The venturi effect makes the air speed up which is what would "pull" the air behind it, in faster. The vacuum happens right at the spot where the space between the hump in the barrel and the shroud are at their smallest. It's how power washers that suck soap from a bottle at the end of the nozzle works. The vacuum created draws the soap up the tube and into the faster flowing water to mix and spray.
I know the premise behind the shroud is sound and that the new military 3D printed supressors use a similar method to facilitate cooling. The biggest question I'd guess would be weather the amount of force being pushed out the front is being restricted enough to create the vacuum needed to pull the air in from the rear. I'd further pontificate that if it doesn't work, it could be mildly tweaked to work really effectively.....which is going to be awesome to see come to fruition on this channel if it does. Keep up the awesome work!
Stuff like this really inspires me to do crazy builds. Right now I am in the process of making a halo 5 sniper rifle which I am using a ar-10 as the base platform.
I've had this idea for a while! I figure you could do that with one of the old, extra-long dpms free float tubes with holes cut in it and a slightly shorter barrel, to keep from having to use too many custom made parts.
Neat project! And it makes my pipe dream of making a scaled down version of Strike Witches Type 99 20mm cannon (basically a handheld 20mm Oerlikon AA gun) out of an AR15 platform a little more realistic. Although, I was thinking in airsoft terms, so it'd mostly be a PVC pipe and plastic board construction for aesthetic only.
PKP machine gun uses the same principle for cooling of the front portion of the barrel from the gas block forward. A military dude said that accuracy of the pk drops significantly as the barrel heats up and pkp is much better in that regard. The concept has so much potencial, theres no way it will not be explored properly at some point.
I have that same optic on my ar15 chambered in 450 bushmaster and the glass is just as clear and bright as my primary arms and swampfox prism sights. Only thing it really leaves to be desired is the shear size of it and the reticle.
I had this exact idea with the JP heat sink lewis gun shroud combo with a linear comp. You could probably lose some tube of the front to make it lighter and more holes at the rear end of the tube for more air flow. Also I think you might get better suction by having a smaller tube diameter near the linear comp area. I made a 3d printed 22lr linear comp that used a lewis gun shroud type thing around it and it seemed to work pretty well. Looking forward to see it shooting.
I wonder if YHM's tube handguards have the same thread front and rear, if they are you could kind of "double nut" two handguards together (over the second barrel nut) without much effort to create a similar effect. About that Colt LMG, I've always thought that would be a kind of cool "steam punk" retro AR with wood furniture. I have the stock and grip, I just need a to make a walnut handguard and a retainer plate. I'll build it around a 18-20" HBAR, chrome lined if I can find that and I think it uses an M60 bipod. The cherry on top will be an old Elcan scope. Could you help me out and share that LMG print?
At first you had my curiosity but now you have my attention I wonder if the barrel was shorter than the shroud you could rig up can cannon functionality with blanks
Honestly, I'd be interested to know if a different radiator or jacket design would make the Venturi effect have a tangible... effect. Were the radiator fins not thin enough to really make a difference? Would a different material work better?
Another version of this with some more modern touches would be also really cool. Maybe a KE arms polymer lower and a carbon fiber tube instead of aluminum. This is such a cool project and would be a blast to shoot with a FRT or binary setup.
I always thought the Lewis was water cooled since the jacket looked so much like that of the Maxim. What I always liked about the Lewis were those round magazines that snapped on the top. Far more practical to swap magazines on top while mounted on a tripod or the top of an airplane cowl. That shroud may not have provided much cooling but I bet it prevented burnt hands and avoided setting flammable cloth covered airplanes on fire.
@@booliganshootingsports That was true for the later swivel style gun mounts but the early adaptations left the shrouds in place. Before they had synchronized firing they tried metal bullet deflectors on the back side of the propeller blades. They ended up mounting the gun on the top wing to avoid shooting the propeller off. Most of those still had the barrel shrouds. Most of those guns were replaced by Vickers which had both water cooled and air cooled designs.
Don't leave us hanging, put out a video of you shooting this! I am really wanting to see how well that venturi effect works. Heh, I'd love to see Ian from Forgotten Weapons use this in a match :)
Neat. I imagine with modern, computer, thermal dynamic simulation, one might design a venturi effect sort of air-cooling set-up that functions a lot better. The juice will probably never be worth the squeeze for that much weight on a man-portable armament because air is just not a great thermal medium but still neat!
I'm curious what you did to make the JP heat sink fit. Did you turn down the barrel, or modify the heat sink? I've thought about trying to build an HBAR SAW stand-in with a FRT or binary, and the JP heat sink is the only one I've found on the market. Thanks for sharing this with us!

I’m sure you’ve probably seen it, but the “AS-VAL at home” would be another fun one to tackle. Kind of a similar look.
What, because of the barrel shroud or the wood?
You just happen to have a bunch of 9x39 laying around? Cause I think you may have a difficult time sourcing some at the moment.
