Karate Kid, Daniel Larusso, risks losing it all when he places pride before principle in this dramatic film that reunites stars Ralph Macchio and Noriyuki "Pat" Morita. When Daniel (Macchio) decides not to compete in the upcoming karate championship, he becomes the target of vicious Cobra Kai student, Mike Barnes (Sean Kanan), who's determined to win the title back. Standing firm, Daniel's mentor and trainer, Mr. Miyagi (Morita), instructs him to ignore Mike's threats - and stay away from the tournament. But when Mike's relentless abuse escalates into blackmail, Daniel finds himself forced into competition - and at serious odds with Miyagi, the one person he cherishes most. Desperate, Daniel turns to another karate instructor, Terry Silver (Thomas Ian Griffith), whose violent combat techniques are directly opposed to Miyagi's wise instruction. But when Daniel realizes that Terry and Mike are allied with Mr Miyagi's old nemesis, Kreese (Martin Kove), in an elaborate set-up for revenge, he also knows he has alienated the only person who can help him. A riveting story of independence, inner strength and self enlightenment, THE KARATE KID, Part III is a powerful new chapter in this popular series of films.

LoL one critic back then said that no respectable tournament governing body would condone Barne's repeated illegal hits and taunts. Much to Kreese & Silver's delighted humor, Barnes kicks the contestant before LaRusso in the nuts. Judging by the dialogue in Cobra Kai, this got Barnes banned from karate. Still, the refs were very slow to do anything. You wonder how much Silver donated is 1985

I Never noticed it before, but look at the way Barnes looks over to Silver when Daniel is in genuine agony at 3:30. It's like he was thinking "Dude, I think he's had enough. Do I really have to keep hurting him?"
Also notice how afterwards when Daniel is hurting and reaching his back, Barnes doesn't attack that area again and instead goes for the chest - and when Daniel is hurting there and reaches his chest, Barnes changes tactics again and goes for his side. He was careful not to attack spots where Daniel was really hurting.
A subtle sign of his eventual redemption in Cobra Kai.
Even Kreese stopped smiling when Daniel was in great pain. Silver was the only one that kept smiling and enjoying it.
Barnes was a bad guy, Kreese was a badder guy, but Silver was (and still is) evil.

This was the best scene in the whole movie. It brings a smile to my face seeing Daniel overcome his fear and almost one-shot Mike Barnes in sudden death. For years I wondered why Barnes was never disqualified for the illegal hits on Daniel. In Cobra Kai season 4, we learn that Terry Silver paid the ref to be biased towards Cobra Kai so that Tory would beat Sam in the finals. Since Terry was also rich in kk3, it's very likely he paid the ref prior to this scene so that it would be easier to prolong Daniel's suffering. He even said to Barnes "Remember the Game plan" before the match started. This could mean they planned this all out before the tournament. It all makes sense now. The fact Daniel won the tournament even though the ref was paid by Cobra Kai is mind blowing.

@@giornikitop5373 Barnes was supposed to be a highly athletic and talented fighter. I don't know if I would label him a prodigy. But when you focus on just the Kumite aspects of karate or similar martial arts, you don't develop the refinement of technique that someone who is well trained in the aspects of kihon (fundamentals) and Kata (forms) will develop especially when paired with Bunkai (application of technique). Barnes shows this here when he kicks primarily. His moves are fast to be sure but sharp and choppy with no proper extension and focus. He probably got to the point of deciding what was good enough with his athleticism and didn't push himself to get better. Combine that attitude (especially if his teachers allowed it with him winning tournaments) with a lack of good fundamentals, you get a sloppy but winning fighter.

You have to look at the pattern of how they flesh out characters on the show. They never make it short or half assed. Chozen had a small part in Season 3 and then season 5 gives him a bigger role and expands on his backstory. No reason in the world they can't or won't do the same with Mike. Literally everyone else has been fleshed out extensively. Mike becoming the fourth sensei actually makes perfect sense for 3 reasons.
      1) His store is still ashes. What's he doing while it's being rebuilt, twiddling his thumbs?
      2) His dynamics with Johnny and Chozen were big hits, and could be expanded on easily. Plus him coming along would give the good side 2 defensive senseis and 2 offensive senseis. Perfect balance.
      3) The most important reason of all. Daniel and Johnny have only completed on a local county level, and Chozen has spent most of his life teaching. Mike is the only character in the franchise who has competed on a larger stage. He was a national champion at 17. The kids are about to jump from the local level straight up to the global level. If there's any sensei who can teach the kids about competing on a bigger stage, it's Mike.
We can also see flashbacks of his youth and how he became what we saw in Part 3. We don't know too much about him. Much to explore.

By your logic, Chozen wouldn't be in the US, but back in Okinawa teaching at his dojo. Nice fail buddy. You'd do best to humble up.

While it is plausible that Mike might've gathered a few henchmen and tried to gain some retribution but I find him too honourable to steep down to that level. Acc to the Director, Mike Barnes cared only about Money. Once his jig was up he simply chose to back out for the good. Another imp point to be noted is that Daniel did not humiliate Mike in any way, wether it was b4 the Tournament or even during the final Match, while Mike literally toyed with Daniel. Hence his eventual defeat most likely deflated his gigantic Ego and knocked some sense into him.
