I was a certified mechanicand my hold free engineering degrees in mechanical engineering. There are actually 3 factors that you use to determine when to replace the oil: Color, smell, and feel. One of the biggest concerns is dust. Be sure to replace the air filter and minimize dust. If you live in a very dry area you might want to consider increasingthe size of the air cleaneror replacing it more often. The silicon dioxide and dust it's very wearing. If you live in Wisconsin you'll be able to drive more miles before you make an oil change but if you live in Phoenix you're kind of screwed. Put the oil on your fingerand look for any particulates.. Then smell it to see if it's gotten odd sent to it which means the oil is breaking down. Then look at the color and see if it's just still a rich brown and translucent. Hope this helps... 😊😊😊

I would love to have a Toyota Tacoma 4 wheel drive truck! I just don't want to pay the $40,000+ that they want for it. About 3 years ago, I got a Nissan 2017 w/ 4 wheel drive with almost 17,000 miles on it for $25,000 (and I thought that was too much money!) I do light maintenance by changing the oil every 5,000 miles, and other things it's needs. So far, it's doing pretty good! The 4 wheel drive came in very handy with the snow storm we had in January!
I bought a 2021 Tacoma Sx at Carmax in 2021 with 60 miles on it. 4wd with the 4 cyl engine for $36,000.00 You can still get a Tacoma 4wd for under 40K.

I had an old flatbed nissan years ago and the enginewas locked up. Took out the plugs, put marvel mystery oil in all the cylinders, let it it sit a couple days then turned the engine by hand and got it running! Smoked like crazy at first but ran great after that!
If i didn't live in south Florida I'd set up a meet with you Scotty to hook up your scan tool on my 2005 Honda Element front wheel drive because it has some issues. Back in the early 80's I ran Castrol GTX 10w-40 automotive oil in my 1979 Kawasaki KZ650C3 and every 1,500 miles I had to change it because it started to shift hard. Of course I did street drag race it on the weekends and beat on it the rest of the week as a daily ride. It did take almost 4 quarts, but it was cheap. Later on oil companies started putting anti friction modifiers in to reduce the viscosity breakdown from the shear force of the transmission gears turning against each other.

My wife bought me 3 USA hitch receivers to mount to 2 pickups. My 2018 toyotaco was not perfect. Ahaa! My 2000 F250 was off 1/4 inch because of a fender dent.
I've got a first gen Nissan Leaf I bought cheap with low mileage and a 2010 Honda Civic with just over 200,000 kms. The Leaf has really crappy range, but still drives like a new car. 90% of my journeys are under 50 miles, so I use the Leaf for next to nothing for all of those. If and when I need to go a longer distance, I take the Civic. Why the hostility? Horses for courses.
Because evs in general are a joke for what you pay....and itll take you quite awhile to make save the amount youve spent on the leaf...and by then,it might break..and youd have to spend a decent amount to fix it..good job on the civic though
EVs aren't worth their price; are not eco-friendly from the time that rare earth minerals are mined for their production to the time their caustic-chemical-filled batteries reach landfills; and for those drivers who use their vehicles for long trips, are worthless. There's more to their disadvantages - I could go on.
Because liberals push their agenda down everyone’s throat. It’s annoying. I own a Bolt EV. I drive 100 to 150 miles a day. I charge every night. It works great as a commuter car. However, EVs should be a choice, not forced with subsides. If they didn’t push stupid subsidies; the market would be normalized. Great way to screw up a new thing is to politicize it. Democrats are pretty stupid.

Toyota now says to change oil every 10,000 miles is this wrong to do Tks in advance Scotty
Best way to change oil is by motor hours rather than milage. Some cars might have low milage but a lot of idling which kills oil even faster due to fuel dilution

Hello from Georgia(country),
You say hybrids are the future of cars. How they hold up over time if they keep shutting down every time you stop at a red light or traffic. Or you step on gas engine starts and imidiatly revs up. And i know most wear comes from the start of the engine.
Also I'm interested, how prius manages to stay so reliable. And how hybrids keep their engines warm while being shut down half of the time. (Sorry for bad English 😂)
Hybrids are also bad on oil as it’s never reach proper operating temperature so the engine wear is higher due to cold engine and fuel dilution.
At :44 You say you keep up on information. If that were true you would have known that the 2013 Chrysler 200 oil sensor CAN be changed without removing the engine. It took me all of 10 seconds to confirm it. YMMV with Scotty and his "knowledge base".

Scotty, what about Amsoil? Should you follow the 5,000 mile rule? 0-20?
I'd go 6k miles on Amsoil without worry
Some people still use conventional oil, so 3K miles or once per year if they don't reach 3K miles in the year applies. You save money by using conventional oil when you drive less than 3K miles per year and change the oil once per year. According to Mobil, their full synthetic oil goes to 10K miles or once per year if you don't reach 10K miles. I've done this for years on all my vehicles, and they've gone the distance without developing engine problems. 5K miles engine oil changes for full synthetic oil is overkill and a waste of money.
You also Probably belive manufacturers when they say "lifetime" fluid for transmissions don't you? Oil Is cheap. Engines aren't.
The manufacturer of the oil telling us to change the oil less often doesn't make them more money They have no reason to not be forthcoming. My 2011 F-150 has received full synthetic oil changes every 10K miles or once per year if driving under 10K miles since I bought it new. Engine is in very good, strong condition. @@ericjarvis3051
Doesn’t synthetic crystalize if you don’t change it every 6 months?
I'll never ever let my car go more than 5k miles before changing the oil. That's just insane I dont see no oil lasting 10k miles and still being a good lubricant
The oil manufacturer makes less when they tell you to change it at 10K miles instead of 5K miles.@@ericjarvis3051
The 1 year rule has to be based on assumptions about how many times you are starting the engine and running it through both a thermal cycle as well as a cycle where the gasoline may condense on the cylinder walls and dilute the oil. I suspect that if you park a car for 100 years without running it, the oil will still be good, but I might be wrong in that some of the additive detergents might have a shelf life.
The oil, after long exposure to different temperatures, may become milky from condensation.
In one of Scotty's videos he exsplaines why you have to change oil in cars that are set for long periods without running them. It can make the engine stop working if not changed. And the oil starts breaking down and goes bad from different weather conditions and condensation that collects inside the engine oil and much more.
@@HarrisonCountyStudio Yeah, but if you aren't driving anywhere, you aren't thermal cycling the engine except via the ambient temperature.
@@kirkjohnson6638 If the oil is in its sealed plastic container, it will last indefinitely. But once that oil is introduced into an open crankcase, the oil starts breaking down whether you drive the car or not. So yes, once per year or 5k miles, whichever comes first; even if you only drove the car 10 miles in a year.
@@JRobert111111 The last time I checked, crankcases are sealed. If the engine isn't run, the air in the crankcase isn't exchanged with any air from outside (unless there are large temperature swings in which case, there could be a very small amount of air exchange).
Was at my favorite dealership and they park all their EV's across the road because they don't want them around their other cars because of the fear of fire ha ha
@Scotty I've owned several Honda Accords and now drive a 1994 Acura Integra. The owners manual clearly states changing oil every 7500 miles under average driving conditions. Wondering why you and most other mechanics say every 3000 5000 miles. I live in central NC
The way cars are typically driven is classified as severe duty. 7500 is for so-called normal driving.
I know some people that never change their engine oil so they don't have any idea about 3,000 or 5,000 miles. I wouldn't even think about buying any car that they owned.
They are idiots. Regular oil changes are the best thing you can do for your car/truck.
Hello Scotty I don't know if you saw my comment on your other video my brother has a 2005 Chevrolet Silverado 5.3 new Spark plugs new spark plug wires new fuel injectors new fuel injector wires new intake gaskets new throttle body New o2 sensors new fuel pump new air filter The engine light flashes off and on dianostic scan shows P1153..P0154..P0300..
If you change oil by the percentage indicator on the automobile, what percentage should you change oil?
If 10,000 miles equal 100%, then 5000 miles will equal 50%. Change your oil every 50% and use at least a synthetic blend oil.
Scotty I live five minutes from work and can't afford one. It's unbelievable!

Electric cars are dearer to run than petrol/diesel/lpg fueled cars, & a test here in Australia recently actually proved this!!
Dearer?
@@KillerofGods yes, they are dearer. The petrol powered BMW was cheaper and took less time to fuel up than the electric powered BMW. Channel 7 Australia tested these cars and stated their findings after. The electric vehicle cost $149 to do the trip from Melbourne to Sydney. The petrol one cost $118.
My Camry takes 0w-16 oil, and Toyota says to change this oil at 10K mile intervals.
You did not explain how changing you your oil had 3000 miles were destroyer. Engine.

thanks. Don't feel too bad. I made a mistake once, too. :-)
Scotty, my Honda Civic is 2007 but I knew I have 261,000 miles on it. How often should I change my oil
5,000 miles. Just make sure you are not loosing (leaking or burning) all your oil out before it’s time for a change.
You shouldn't use conventional oil if your car calls for synthetic oil and it doesn't matter how often you change it. Synthetic is thinner and made for the closer tolerances of the modern vehicles. Use what oil it calls for by the manufacturer and it won't hurt to change it every 3k miles. Its also important to use a quality oil filter
why would synthetic be thinner, other than the fact that it flows better at very cold temperatures. Is 5W-20 synthetic thinner than 5W-20 conventional?
I wanna know what Scotty is on. He’s got a lot of energy lol.

I change my oil every 250 motor hours and because 90% of my journey is a high speed motorway it amounts to around 8000 miles.
I use full synthetic and still do 3k mile oil changes since new. Runs like new at 130k miles and burns/leaks nothing
I have a 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport 2t. How many miles should I go between oil changes? I use fully synthetic oil, and I've heard I should change it at 3,000, 3,750, or 5,000 miles.
You should be ok with 5,000 miles. Becareful though.. if its the 4 cyl ,hyundai 4 cyls tend to burn oil even without high miles..

The book may be back dated, but so are the vehicles they are about. New cars are made of forward dated materials that were made with forward dated technologies. Supposedly anyway.

One of the cars in my drive is a BMW, yeah it is an E90, Yeah they have problems, and yeah they cost to maintain... but it is still better than one of those EV piles of junk. I don't have to charge it up each night. It just works.
My question for you Scotty. How do the carmakers continue making cars when no one is buying them. How do they get paid?
No one is buying Electric Cars. Dealers are selling ICE cars regularly.
It's called debt. All automakers are in debt.
They need to shut ALL Auto makers down. No one is buying them.
The only customer car manufacturers have are the car dealerships. The dealerships buy the cars from the manufacturers. That is how the car manufacturers get paid. Once the cars are at the dealership the dealership owns them & they're the dealers problem. Car dealers finance all of the cars sitting on their lot using floor plan financing. So all of those cars sitting around on dealer lots that don't sell are racking up interest. The dealers are the ones who don't make a dime on the cars until they're sold. Of course if the dealers aren't turning over their inventory frequently then they won't be ordering more cars which will eventually affect the manufacturers bottom line.
BTW - "Floor planning is a type of inventory financing for large ticket retail items. Retailers use a short-term loan to purchase inventory items, and the loan is repaid as inventory is sold. Floor planning is especially used in car dealerships and for major appliances."
Scotty, how did you come up with 5000 miles as the miles between two consecutive engine oil changes? Is 5000 based on a special math formula? Is 5000 based on the large number of data from the experiment? Why not 4000 miles, 6000 miles, 7000 miles, or 8000 miles?
In my neck of the woods majority of the trucks are Rams and Fords then GM.. sometimes you will see a Toy. 😂🇺🇸🐻🇺🇸

I still think to this day the only realistic transition from gas would be hydrogen fuel cell. Its easy to retrofit current gas stations to hydrogen. It only takes about 3 mins to fill up instead of hours. Not to mention its byproduct is water vapor. I'll be honest I'm not entirely sure how eco efficient it is to produce hydrogen but I would imagine it would be better than the electric grid.
