This sounds so similar. I won one of those summer reading contests with 310 books read. Always been a fast reader, but my dad came down hard on me. Thought I was wasting my time. For some dumb reason I respected him when I was young. Took 20 years to get over my aversion to reading.

Audiobooks definitely got me back in the swing of things.
Adulting is hard and finding the time to actually sit down, find my glasses, get the right lighting, and then read a novel? Impossible.
But I can listen to an audiobook while driving, while working, while cleaning the house, taking care of my son. I burned through the entire Stormlight Archive in less than a month, dude. Give it a try.

I was the same. I finished all the class work early and normally had around 15ish minutes where I'd read. They took my books away when I did that and seemed to expect me to just stare at a wall or something else mind draining. Gotta love the education system

@@turkalpha6884 it's honestly not even that bad of an adaptation, it's a good movie that just intentionally misses the point of the book, while failing to depict the federation as fascist simply because the makers of the movie have no clue what fascism and just threw it around as a buzzword at whoever they didn't like.

But, yeah, the directly didn't even read the book (he hated it) and just went off on his own. All the great satiric bits in the movie were from the book, people just think it was what he made up.
Also, saying that it's a bad adaptation in any way seems to twigger the people who love it (and haven't read the book). As if how faithful an adaptation is = how entertaining the movie is. (example: Total Recall)

Anthem was required reading for me in school, must have been a school board level decision because my English teacher that year literally looked like an older version of the meme with the white girl with dreads.
I felt like kind of an outcast as a kid and didn't particularly like most other kids but even then reading it didn't feel relatable, to me at the time it read almost like the mc despised the idea of cooperation (no idea if that's the intent, haven't returned to it as an adult.) and I was thankfully not that far gone.

YUUUP. I hated reading as a kid. Especially when forced in to it. So in elementary school when they told us to read 30 pages a day, I just forged my mom's initials. She never knew about it. And the teacher had no way of verifying if it was me or her. And yes, it should have been based on the complexity of the book. 30 pages for me would have been 60+ minutes of reading compared to the 10 minutes for the chucklefart struggling to read the articles in sentences.
