    • @dutchdykefinger
      @dutchdykefinger Před 11 měsíci +5

      in all fairness, many of them probably have safety standards that could make them double as one when you use it alternatively,
      the term hacking for using something functionally in a different way than its intended use existed long before home computers were a thing.
      when you're in the torture business, you may similarly find some hacking (pun intended) here and there
      kitchen appliance and torture device isn't a truly mutually exclusive category, could be both, sure, they're probably sold and advertised as kitchen appliances, but that's just a label they stick on it man, whichever target audience sells the most product, money makes the world go round, and observations seem to indicate that on average, people appear to engage more in the activity of cooking and preparing food, than they do in the activity of torturing people, it is what it is.
      but if we're going to get worked up about the intended use of devices, you'll find that very little things are in fact torture devices,
      when you think outside of that restrictive paradigm.... you will find that many, many things are torture devices in function, the possibilities are limitless.
      gotta think outside the box when you don't want to put them inside of a box right away, and play with them a bit first.
      if you're going to just indisciminately butcher and phone it in with little to no regard or respect for the process, you may as well let the machines take over, as there's no pride left in your work, instruments like these are.. instrumental in the true craftsman torture business

      Ann Reardon's popcorns weren't rounded like this one, perhaps the amount of pressure can yield different results. In Southeast Asia, these rounded shaped popcorns are more the premium side on the market since you have to use this pressure device to yield the rounded result and it should be crispier.

    The beauty of the popper is a bit lost on popcorn, which will pop on its own. The fun is in the grains that will only pop if heated under pressure like this, like wheat. Saw this all the time in Seoul in the late 1990s while there, but like @FrenchGuyCooking said, they're huge and go off like a cannon. Saw a mother and child walk too close to one once, not paying attention to the operator's whistle blast warning of the imminent pressure release. She yelled at the old guy like he'd tried to kill her child.

    I can't believe you didn't know the classy cutter! Literally everyone had one of these at home! It was one of those 'as seen on tv' gadgets and widely available on the market(stall) for about fl.7.50/10. You know how popular they were because they've been turning up in thriftstores for a while now. For 2/3 euros (Because the people who had these are leaving their house now...) they still work, better than anything electric now. And the spriralizer is absolutely 'AMAZING' 😉. I mean, its a piece of plastic that cuts through carrots and potatoes and stays sharp! And in the decade of the buffets that thing was gold! Saved so much time.
    And yes, HTCT also tested the popcornmaker and it was great to see you do it too. Hey Jamie! You loved your bbq gloves so much! Well, this is another way to use them!

    The apple peeler. When I was younger, my neighbor had an apple tree and since you tend to harvest the apples by the dozens, the fastest way to prep the fruit for pies, sauce, butter, and juice was this ancient tool. Our little neighborhood ate well during harvest season.

    That apple peeler was a staple in my home growing up in the 80's because we had multiple apple trees in our back yard and garden, it was great for getting them all skinned for making apple pies, apple cobbler, canning them, making stuffed apples, apple sauce and yeah... That was all from just a few trees.

    3:20 my mom has a peeler/slicer combo one that she inherited from her great grandma and she would keep it with Bundt pans and such that she wouldn’t always bake with.
    She would pull it out during holidays like 4th of July, thanksgiving and Christmas (sometimes my birthday too!) and she would make a whole day out of making apple, pumpkin and pecan pies with me and my little sister.
    I’m 30 now and we still do this every holiday.
