    There used to be theories about this game being a movie, like how SMB3 was a stage preference.
    That would explain the castle interior not matching the exterior, as well as all the paintings.

    I also know that liminal spaces play a major role in the eerieness of the castle. In the context I'm using it in, liminal space is a term used to refer to somewhere that feels off, whether the feeling is from unusual emptiness, being there when you shouldn't be, or hanging around in certain transitional areas (also called liminal spaces, with a good example being a hallway) too long. Many places in SM64 are oddly walled off from everywhere else and/or make you feel like you aren't supposed to be there. Take Wet Dry World's town as an example. You can't go back after entering, regardless of water height. It also is a complete ghost town that feels like neither you nor it should be there. The rest of the level also is quite dreary in mood and that tends to reflect onto the player.

    I miss the Bowser from this time period, before Super Mario Sunshine added a voice and made him a goofy dad.
    Between SMB1, SMB3, SMW and SM64, Bowser was a crafty, mysterious koopa dragon, who only spoke through text.
    He was an insidious, conniving villain the games. In Mario Parties 1-3, visiting Bowser was and losing stars or coins was terrifying.
    He was intimidating. Scary. Myserious. Fighting him for the first time in SM64 - my first boss ever - I was literally shaking. Note, I was like... 8. Lol.
    And then SMS came along and I saw her casually bathing, and in an instant, he didn't feel the same anymore.

    • @retrofan4963
      @retrofan4963 Před 2 lety

      I agree. Bowser used to have a serious threat vibe to him in the older Mario games in NES, SNES, and N64 era. Another proof of that is the Mario cartoon shows made in the late 80's and early 90's when he's famously referred as King Koopa. Lot of the episodes in Super Mario Bros Super Show, Bowser would go as far to kill the the Mario Bros, Princess Peach, and Toad with no mercy if he has the chance, which I can't honestly imagine he would do in the modern Mario games, especially towards Princess Peach. Before I played the Gamecube era games, I honestly viewed Bowser as a serious threat villian, who's really monstrous within him as his appearance. But ever since I played the Gamecube Mario games, the Wii Mario games, etc., my view of Bowser has changed.

    • @josiahferrell5022
      @josiahferrell5022 Před 2 lety

      100%. It's probably the most disappointing thing about the Mario series (not much else, obviously). When I was playing it for the first time at 8-9 years old, I actually felt afraid of Bowser. In today's games, I can't imagine 9 year-olds doing anything but laughing at him.

    • @retrofan4963
      @retrofan4963 Před 2 lety

      @@josiahferrell5022 Exactly. Nowadays for the most part, Bowser is treated such a goofball villain, to the point it's hard to take him seriously anymore as a villain. His lighthearted goofball dad persona overshadow his threatening and scary side of him that he used to have. Heck, Mario and Bowser now has bromance moments here and there which I can't imagine Bowser would ever do back then lol I guess Nintendo nowadays want to give more depth to Bowser's personality and make him more human? But the way they did it sacrifice everything what's taken seriously as a villain. One of the best examples of Bowser's old persona is the Super Mario Bros. Super Show. Bowser in that show would do any despicable thing to take over the Mushroom Kingdom. Even willing to kill the Mario Bros, Toad, and even Princess Peach. Every time he appears in the screen in that show, you know it's going down. No one would imagine that reptile ever be friendly with Mario. Bowser is a joke nowadays compared to old school Bowser.

      For me, it feels like the whole game is inside of a bottle. A castle-in-a-bottle with magic creepy worlds inside miniature paintings. All the while, Bowser is hidden in the eerie sky off of the map, just watching your every move. And he isn't the fun-loving stupid enemy that he has become in the games since then. That Peach picture turning into Bowser doesn't make him seem like a joke-cracking villain.

    Basically what you guys may interpret as 'realistic death animations' and 'eerieness' was Nintendo's way back then of creating cinematography and immersing the players into their first 3D experience with Mario. Because it was the first of its kind, and the hardware was still very limited, I remember playing the game back then and thinking this felt more like a movie than it being a scary experience. If it was still very cutesy and full of life, it wouldn't have represented a change of gaming era back then, and Mario 64 was very much a statement of 2D moving into 3D. You can say that the game was more of a showcase of technology than your average addition to the Mario series.

  • @centurosproductions8827

    Nico, you missed that this is just Peach's museum/amusement park castle. She also has a summer castle, an everyday castle, and a get-captured-by-Bowser castle (he ignored that one this time).

    My favorite spooky mario game is a spin off is the luigi's mansion series the first one is my favorite the atmosphere like a lighting strike the music then there the portrait ghost had diffrent personalities and hobbies like melody the Beautiful Pianist or nevel the bookish father diffrent ways to defeat them that made that game so replayable and fun

    It's not that your scared of being alone your scared of someone being with you it's haunting and the windows are not on the Inside of the castle the place is huge furniture could be anywhere but it's filled with Ereaness with ghosts and the rooms and the gltiches and the emptiness gives you some Erea vibes
