Cycling the Tunnel Hill Bike Trail in Southern Illinois

- This summer, I'm going to hit some trails. My favorite rail-trail near my home in southern Illinois is the Tunnel Hill trail, a 45 mile trail from Harrisburg to Karnak. It goes through part of the Shawnee forest in the uplands and then down to the wetlands in the bottoms south of Vienna. Vienna also happens to be the Bicycling Capital of Illinois. So ride with me as I explore the scenery and wildlife along Illinois' best rail-trail at Tunnel Hill.

Great to see you back Paul! I crashed last July (2022) as well. An unleashed dog came out from a fence and sent me over my handlebars. Broken/sprained ankle. The ankle is 90%, but i agree with you... I'm sticking to railtrail and gravel. Glad you're back riding! Happy Retirement! 🍻 Alex
I think so Chuck! A few of my friends were attacked by dogs as well, but luckily, didn't go off their bike like me! Glad we're both ok (and Paul and fellow cyclists!).

Always sucks to come off the bike. Glad to hear you’ve pretty much recovered and can do some riding again. You’re a big inspiration for my own bike tours and when I’m out on the bike and come across a situation you’ve covered I think of you and your videos. I’m tempted to try bike packing but so far I enjoy the creature comforts of a proper shower, bed and heating. Thanks the the videos mate!

Sorry to hear about your accident. Glad you are back. My husband had a bad crash and at 79 it took a bit of confidence away. We rode the rail trail from Vernon BC to Oyama BC and the trestle trail, and they are the way to go to get back riding again. Thanks, really enjoy your videos.

my first experience with a rail trail was in 2012, on the New River Trail in virginia. It was almost magical. My daugher was 12 back then and we were riding from North Carolina to Texas that summer. We found the trail almost by accident and what a marvelous find it was. I remember how happy she was to swim in the freeing summer waters and how nice a change it was after the hills of the Blue Ridge mountains. But a few days after we were off the trail, and into the steep mountains of Kentucky, my daughter did declare how nice it was to struggle with the hills again. I guess variety is the key?
Sorry for the slow response. I've been out riding some rail trails. We went to West Virginia in June and then out to South Dakota in July. New videos coming soon. The New River trail is on my list. your ridding a Surly bike witch one. You've inspired me with your video's I found a surly disk trucker I've been putting in 10-15 miles a day trying to get ready for a Katy trail ride next spring

Sorry it took so long to get back. You might try the Des Moines area. We spent a few days in the area last summer, and my wife and I enjoyed the many established bike trails while staying in an Air B&B. It is close to our home in Columbia MO, and would be great place to put together a longer bike trip.

Nicely done👍 Great narration. We have a potential trail/rail/train here where I live that has been in study and planning for 10years +. Still no trail. It has been held up by train advocates that the train needs to be included along with the bike path. Transportation board has had endless studies and resulting conclusions are the same. Train is not economically feasible. Yet, they hope to have another study that agrees with the train coexisting with the trail.
Oh yes, my wife (nee James) as well as her family/siblings, early home was in Tunnel Hill. Other problematic issue is we live in California. That should partly explain why there has been little or no progress.🤣😂

I’ve been doing slow century rides lately on an old Schwinn Tempo(Panasonic frame)..About half of my miles are various rail trails linked together..At 64 years of age with an improved diet I’m enjoying day long bike adventures..Thanks for the inspiration/motivation 🚲

@@paulsuchecki3985 I have a friend doing a sponsored walk, cycle from Lands End in Cornwall to John O' Groats the most northern part of the British mainland for his local cancer hospice and I shall be joining him at Fort William as far as Inverness. I shall be on my bike and taking some weight off him for the journey. I will be preparing for my journey of the North 500 around Scotland. I go in August
