- It's been a few month since Vicky, Jim and Luna completed the Bike Tour, but there's still a lot of interest in Vicky's bike - a Surly Disc Trucker. This is the third video they've made to discuss the bike. This one is post trip, with a review of the bike and it's equipment: what worked well, and what didn't. Enjoy and leave us a comment if this is helpful/interesting. Here is a list of the equipment discussed and links to find it:

I ride a Surly Disc Trucker that I converted to Surly Moloko alt bars and a Brooks C-19 saddle. It is my favorite bike to ride out of my herd. I realy enjoy watching your videos!
Thanks! Glad you liked them. I tried the Brooks Saddle but it wasn't for me. I got one specifically for females and that was perfect!
Nice review. I love my disc trucker. I carry 4 of the insulated bottles, big deal for me is trying to find tough bottle holders we use to get 15 years ago.
you are a superstar
Don't know about that, but thanks!
I'm recently retired in the midwest and just purchased a new Disc Trucker in Amersfoort, Netherlands.
I'll be riding through parts of 6 countries in Europe in May/June.
I have friends in Europe who have agreed to store my bike so I can hopefully return in 2024.
Thanks for your videos. Always nice to hear from a kindred spirit.
Thanks for watching! I hope you have enjoyed them!
Woohoo, beatiful .farewell! ))
I have a 2018 Surly disk trucker and the first I did was buy a Brooks B-17 leather saddle. It was very comfortable from day one 1 and it gets more comfortable the more I use it. I also have a cheap single speed bike with the same seat. I highly recommend them.
I agree!
@@vickyjimandthelunatic After I made that comment I saw your next video which showed that you already bought the Brooks saddle. I also bought a nice cover for mine which keeps the saddle dry when transporting my bike to and from bike trails.
Hello Vicky Jim & Luna, I’m in my early 60’s and have just rediscovered my love of biking after a couple decades off a bike . I rode motorcycles but it’s a different experience. I’m doing it for my Heath and fitness but am realizing once again, it’s a lot of fun. I have a Trek FX3 , it’s a hybrid fitness bike with flat bars. I love it but I’m thinking of getting a drop bar bike , probably an endurance or gravel bike or touring and the Surly Disk Trucker is on my list. I’m even considering an e road bike.
Thanks for inspiring me. I enjoyed everyone of you’re videos along you’re journey.
I’m an Oregonian and yes, it rains a lot here but the summers and falls are wonderful and I think we have the most beautiful state with so much to offer. I love everything about it but the politics. Thanks again
Hi Steve! Glad you enjoyed our videos! You’re very fortunate to live in Oregon! Such a beautiful state!
I like the Topeak MTX trunk bags too. Especially the DXP models where the side pockets drop down and become panniers.
Great bags!
BTW: Topeak also does some good tools. The Mini 9+ multitool is a great little product. It does nearly everything I need on the trail. Plus it's pretty cheap, so I won't be crying too much if gets dropped or accidentally left behind.
Cheers
Glad you like them!
Fantastic bikes, yours looks great !!
Many thanks!
Thanks for the video, I'm adding fenders to mine too
Considering how much rain I rode through on my trip last summer, I was very happy to have them!! I hope you are too.
Good!
Vicky - I've owned/ridden Surly DT''s for years, so I can add a few comments. Fenders: yes! Mandatory. It keeps major amounts of gunk off of you and much of your bike. I bought Planet Bike fenders (all metal). Bar-end shifters: new to me with the Surly, but I love them. Mostly (like you) I ride, but don't race. Also, they are much more convenient in winter, when shifting with gloves or mitts. Mirrors: never used them. I couldn't see the purpose of knowing what was going to hit me, and I tend towards minimalism. Handlebar bag: I have used the 'boxed trunks,' but I've had to move to a sort of handlebar sling bag. The box trunks prevent the mounting/use of headlights. Chains: just after purchase, I usually get the bike shop to add a 'universal' (removable) link to the chain, and carry spares with a tool That makes it easier to drop the chain and replace a flat tire, or clean the chain. Tubeless tires: although they are standard on new purchases now, I would still ride with a spare tube and inflator cartridge pump. That would keep you moving when your 20 miles outside of nowhere. Kickstand: never used one, but should have. Racks: I use front and rear Surly racks, whether you have panniers or not. There's nothing worse than having to move something, but no place to put it. More water? Souvenir t-shirts? Bags: always buy the waterproof items. I've used Ortlieb bags for years, and recommend them. I'm really jealous of you going cross-country! Bill O'G
Thanks for all the comments Bill! It's interesting to hear how other people organize things. Fortunately everything worked really well for me except the bike seat. I got a new one for Christmas but haven't been able to do any biking lately since I had foot surgery. But I'll be back on by the end of this month and hopefully do a review once I've put some miles on it.
fender and kickstand while they are adding weights, it’s also have the benefits.
definitely!!
Zero flats! Can you share the tire info? Was it a tubeless setup?
Thanks!
You bet!
I have the Surly Long Haul Trucker ( no disc). I am hating the seat . I have tried 2 different ones . Hate them both . Great trip .
I had the same issue with the Disc Trucker! I've just got a new seat and am breaking it in. I'd do a video after I've had it awhile to give a review.
@@vickyjimandthelunatic super /can't wait , i subscribed
I also have a Surly Disc Trucker and have been looking for fenders. What is the brand of fenders do you have on your bike? Thx 😊
They say SKS-GERMANY.COM on them. The bike shop put them on for me before I picked it up.
How did you get the decal on your bike? in planning on Debranding mine, but I'm not sure how people do graphics, is there a place your order it from?
My husband ordered several on line. He says he just searched for vinyl lettering and picked a place.
Would you share the brand of the double kickstand? I just received my trucker in the box. I know that I'll need a kickstand. Thanx!❤
Sorry for the delay - haven't been on CZcams in awhile. Here's a link: Kickstand: www.amazon.com/Pletscher-Twin...
I put links for all the equipment in the video comments.
Handlebar bag name
Are those the tires you used on the trip?
Sorry for the late reply. Been busy with other things and neglected my channel. Yes! I'm still using the same two tires since I made the trip and haven't had my first flat yet (knock on wood!!).
Which mirror are you using
If you watch my Post Trip bike update, it gives info about all the equipment we added. Here's the mirror info:
Safety Mirror: Selle Italia: www.amazon.com/Selle-Italia-Panorama-Handlebar-Bicycles/dp/B00CDPDIOA?th=1
No Panniers?
Since my husband met me every night in the RV, I didn’t need to carry that much during the day.
@@vickyjimandthelunatic I see. I assumed you were riding together, so he was shadowing you. Enjoyed your posts. Take Care.
That WTB seat is over rated. It's hard with minimal padding. I knew it was NG the moment my derrier was on it. The Wittkop Medicus or Selle Royal Respiro is good.
