  • Cycle along with me on a 5 day ride on the Katy Trail in Missouri. The Katy Trail is a 240 mile long rail trail the goes almost all the way across Missouri from St. Charles to Clinton. The trail passes beneath 100 foot bluffs in the Rocheport area as it follows the Missouri River for most of the way. The scenic trail goes through the Hermann area, considered Missouri's wine country. The trail goes past the capitol of Missouri, Jefferson City and Columbia the home of the Missouri Tigers. From Boonville the trail goes west through Sedalia the home of the annual State Fair and ends at the western terminus in Clinton. The Katy Trail boasts being the longest continuous rail trail in America. It takes you along rivers through forest and fields and into rural Missouri. For the distance adventure cyclist, the Katy Trail is a must do. Hope to see you down the trail!!

Your videos are a gift to normal people.
I'm so tired of the people that get dressed in lycra just to go out for a coffee. I have been riding for 50 years, and I would like to think that there is more joy in the basics.

I grew up in STL, Mo. Wish they had taught us about this lifestyle in my middle and high school. I enjoyed this review of a long distance rail trail in my home state a great deal. How to get performance cycling physical literacy into high school curriculums, the question of the moment?

We went from St Charles to Blufton and back to St Charles over the course of a couple days. We also enjoyed a mighty fine lunch at the Dutzow Deli, of course. I wanted to let you know how much I've enjoyed your videos; your footage, hand drawn maps, historical facts and commentary really make me want me to "go ride my bike!" Love your perspective! I've ridden the trail a few times. After covering the whole thing, you kind of have your favorite spots and ride them. I like to take Amtrak to Jeff. City and then ride West to Easley where I camp at Coopers Landing on the river. It's got great food, music on the weekend, and a shower. I then ride back East, and will stop at Hermann where I'll camp and eat again before taking Amtrak back home the next day. Like your videos. This one made me miss the Katy. Hopefully I'll get out there this year. Take care!

I have always wanted to ride the Katy trail since I found out about it in 2007. Might do it if my south Dakota Trip doesn't play out. Does Amtrak allow bicycles on board Thier trains? That would be an idea for a trip.

I've got a few videos in the works. A "How to", a "Gear list" and a "This is my bike". To get some ideas, I've watched other videos on CZcams like that. It's hard not to make it boring, but I'm gonna try. Hopefully have them ready after the New Year. I don't own one, but I would consider the Surly Long Haul Trucker or the Disc Trucker to be the industry standard for touring bikes these days. Given supply chain issues they can be hard to find. But if you can find one they should cost between $1500 and 2000. You could spend $5000 on a custom built Waterford. That's for people where money is not an issue. Will they get $3500 worth of more fun out of it? Maybe, maybe not. But other bikers will be very impressed. I ride an old Miyata 1000. A fine bike. I paid $600 on ebay. After upgrading wheels, drive chain, seat, handlebars, I probably put another $900 into it. For that money I probably could have gotten a Surly, but that would be too easy. I want to impress people with my suped-up vintage touring bike. I've got some older used touring bikes hanging around the garage. If you're on a tight budget I might be able to put something together for you that you can afford. I'm not trying to sell bikes, just making a point that this can be done affordably. And I'd love to see you out touring. Anyways, thanks for watching! More to come.

Speaking of maintenance----I once rode up on a downed tree blocking the trail. I reported it to a Park Ranger (the Katy Trail is a state park) and went on. When I returned about an hour later, they were already cutting up the tree for removal. Thanks for watching. I really appreciate it! Like many crushed gravel trails, it's a little slower going. On a level paved road with no wind, I usually pedal along at 10-12 mph. On a gravel trail its about 8-10 mph. Add hills and wind and adjust accordingly. Fortunately rail trails tend to have less hills and wind.
The Surly LHT is a sturdy touring bike. I don't own one, but for a while there it was the industry standard and very popular. Can't buy them new anymore. The Ohio to Erie trail has some big towns like Cincinnati, Columbus, Cleveland. But there is a stretch south of Akron where overnight accommodations are scarce. The C&O and GAP are great for bikepacking. The cities are at the ends of the trail with lots of primitive in between. The Erie Canal, I think, has lots of cool old towns with places to eat and stay with lots of history. So if that's what you are looking for, That's the one I would recommend.
