BRAVO!!!! Jonas Kaufmann is one of the greatest heldentenors in this days!!! He really heritates the greatness of the pass best historic "heldentenors". Bravooo!!!
Say what you will about Kaufmann’s versatility... and it is formidable but when he is singing Wagner, his native language with that fabulous dark baritone lower voice...it’s the real deal
What you heard on this video is NOT what you hear in the house. I was there. It is pretty well-known that the Met uses body mics during the broadcasts/HD performances, but NOT to amplify the singers in the house.
Before the discussion about mics becomes endless - opera singers carry no mics. Sometimes, for broadcasts, they are placed above the stage or in front of it but not on the singers. This is not a musical show - this is serious singing!
The Met doesn't amplify it's singers in staged opera. They never have. Many opera companies have playback monitors on stage, so that the singers can actually hear the orchestra. That is not the same thing as amplifying the singers. The Met has NEVER amplified the voice of singers into the hall. I guarantee, you couldn't name one opera where the Met actually amplified the voice of singers into the hall, not one.
No way. The voices just are too close in your headphones compared with the orchestra to be recorded from the audience. This recording is no different from recording a musical except the mics are hidden ion stage, costumes and hair, later a producer mixes all different mics and amplifies the voices.
Every stage has a sweet spot. It depends on the sets. For example, I just saw Boheme at the ROH in London, and the top of the staircase in Rodolfo's flat was the sweet spot. Whenever ANY singer stood there and sang, the voice was larger and more resonant. But guess what....no one sang their main arias there. I really wish that people spent less time cutting these singers off at the knees and more time celebrating their art!
Miraculous! If this is from the 14 May 2011 performance, I was in the audience at the Met. They most certainly were NOT miked to amplify their voices, but only to capture the sound for HD. They sounded exactly the same on the stage as in this clip. Kaufmann's voice, in particular, is very well-focused - it is not a huge voice, but it resonates throughout the theater. Excellent performance here.
I get chills too, every time. I've listened to this on the famous Solti studio set and the live Keilberth of 1955. I was surprised that as good as they are, they lack the propulsion and sheer thrill of this one. Of course this performance has the advantage of being a live video, but Levine, Kaufmann and Westbroek are firing on all 12 cylinders. And I've never seen anyone pull that sword out of the tree as well as Kaufmann does! Just one aspect of his artistry. Even the way the camera moves across the stage is magical.
Re: Kaufmann, I think he is one of the most interesting singers to have appeared in decade, musically he is extremely modern (i.e. respectful of musical values and the composers intentions) without sacrificing dramatic intention. Indeed music and drama are wonderfully united in his performances quite the opposite of del Monaco where the dramatic interpretation was imposed on the music and very often destroyed it.
Great!!! extraordinary! I hope Kaufmann can resist the overkill of the market and take proper care of his voice. He is the best Tenor, great Musician and great Artist around and hopefully he will be for long time.
Yes, I agree wholeheartedly, that Act 1 from 35 is unbelievable, such a pity the didn't record the whole opera. For those who have never heard it, it can be found on YT just search "Die Walküre Bruno Walter", not only do you have Melchior your have Lotte Lehmann and it's conducted by Bruno Walter
To LestatxLouis1 what can you posibly mean by "his pronounciation is off"? Don't you know hè IS German? You may wish all of them had as good à pronounciation as his. And his lyrical singing? What would you prefer? Someone singing at the top of theorie Voice? I thought hs performance was spot on, perfect balance of Love, Emotion and Heroïsm.
It's a technical remark: for example, his Eeee vowels are wrong (he turns them into 'eh'), which raises concerns about his vocal production. He lacks chest voice and is throaty most of times. I suggest you listen to Lauritz Melcior performance of the same aria for comparison. The sounds is deeper and more noble. I understand Kaufmann fans will disagree, but this is something that needs to be said, with great respect. He still is a great artist with a nice voice, but he sadly took the wrong route 25 years ago.
Kaufmann is a stunning and also a great looking Siegmund! I would like to see more of this "Valkyrie"! But everybody who loves this, should check out the "Valkyrie" of the Bayreuth Centennial Ring from Patrice Chereau and Pierre Boulez with a still very young Peter Hofmann as Siegmund. I think that at this point in Peter Hofmann's unfortunately not very long career he was even better than Kaufmann, and he looked and acted equally great. Sieglinde is great, too! It's easy to find the Centennial Ring complete and in excerpts on CZcams. I love Jonas Kaufmann, but Peter Hofmann was born for the roles of Siegmund and Lohengrin!
Westbroek is one of my favourite Sieglindes and Jonas is definitely one of the best Siegmunds today. Not to mention they both look the part. Whenever people ask why I write so many fanfics with incest I just blame it on Wagner. :D
Kaufmann is the best Siegmund I have ever heard. Westbroek is also good as Sieglinde. I had a lot of issues with this production, but the first act of Die Walkuere was winning -- there was also a menacing Hunding by Hans-Peter Koenig. Though of course, as always, the real star is Richard Wagner. Frightening genius!
@Baritanist What do you mean, they are recording so there are mics taking the sound, but there are no mikes in the theatre, but yes there are mics picking up the recording, and those mics are balanced, but that is totally normal. I heard it in the house and it was wonderful
Truly a remarkable, magnificent performance from the both of them. I saw this on the Met's simulcasting and it was spellbinding. I'm glad to see this CZcams as a reminder. I don't like Wagner and I want JK to stay with Italian and French operas, but he is really cut out to be a unique Heldentenor - Good luck JK!
The voices just are too close in your headphones compared with the orchestra to be recorded from the audience. Mics are hidden on stage, costumes and hair, later a producer mixes all different audio sources and amplifies the voices, exactly how it is done when recoding musicals.
Search for "Seiffert wintersturme valencia". Kaufmann has the dark looks and the dark timbre. Seiffert doesn't quite have the looks but has a very nice bright timbre. They are both great in their own way.
@dgmelvin Actually, sorry, I was the one saying he wasn't miked and that I worship his beautiful singing, that was @Afropoli. Can I ask that you edit your comment, as I do not wish to be associated with that accusation. I also saw him in the same shows live and enjoyed every second. :)
@lamusicahera I share your opinion, however that is one of the main challenges for upcoming singers. They must be able to manage their resources in an intelligent manner. I hope Kaufmann succeeds in this matter too.
@AfroPoli, I don't think they mic-ed him. In Das Rheingold, they would have mic-ed the Rheinmaidens but didn't. Similarly in Siegfried, they would have mic-ed Erda and her low notes and Morris as Siegfried because he doesn't have a giant voice but in both cases AFAICT they didn't. And in this clip, Sieglinde is blasting right next to him which the mic would have amplified but there is no volume difference between her here and in other clips.
Yes, I stand corrected. Nevertheless, my point was that Del Monaco cannot be really brought into the equation when speaking of wagnerian tenors. If we want to look back in history at great 'model' interpreters of Siegmund we ought to consider singers like Melchior, Vinay, Suthaus, Vickers or King. Del Monaco's repertoire was elsewhere, I have serious issues with his general lack of musical discipline and how propagated a grossly misleading interpretation of Otello.. but that's another story.
Ionas Kaufman is much more natural and attractive in Vagner than in Italian opera which proves that there is such a thing as inborn temperament, at least in this case. It would be better if modern opera singers limited themselves a little to the roles best suited to them and avoided the temptations of contracts around the world which bring in the end waning of taltnt.
Please! Dem Monaco never sang Siegmund, he only sang a bit late in his career for a TV concert and his German was odd to say the least, ask if he has heard Melchior or Vinay or Suthaus
This has got to be one of the sexiest parts of the entire ring. Sieglinde showing Siegfried where his manhood is...Notung...and he pulls it out! She practically faints, then rushs to him and while he raises his "manhood higher and higher, she is at his feet, hugging his legs, body, buttocks, etc...and the two of them become hotter and hotter until they fall on each other at the end as the music goes nuts....or....NOT. Not here, folks. Just singing. Good singing, but just singing.
Brava, Brava, Brava!!!!
Kaufmann is just incredible as Siegmund! I was a fan before but this is just stunning!
I'm not sure I should listen to this. I get too excited. My eyes tear up and my nose runs. I can hardly breathe.
Maravilloso Jonas Kaufmann y Eva-Mria Westbroek, bravoooo!!!!!
BRAVO!!!! Jonas Kaufmann is one of the greatest heldentenors in this days!!! He really heritates the greatness of the pass best historic "heldentenors". Bravooo!!!
John Schofield Jonas Kaufman isn’t even a dramatic tenor, much less a heldentenor
Easily the sexiest Siegmund I have ever had the pleasure to behold, and the voice is beautiful.
Shame the voice can't handle it
Kaufmann is just NOT a Heldentenor in the sense of Wagner, he sounds so wrong as Siegmund.
Well, Peter Hoffmann was sexy in his day! I take your point, though!
Say what you will about Kaufmann’s versatility... and it is formidable but when he is singing Wagner, his native language with that fabulous dark baritone lower voice...it’s the real deal
Absolument magnifique !
The man is an extraordinary artist, absolutely extraordinary. Of course the moment is absolutely sick.
Saw the whole opera on PBS this afternoon - absolutely stunning production: Wotan, Brünnhilde, Sieglinde - all spectacular performances...
What you heard on this video is NOT what you hear in the house. I was there. It is pretty well-known that the Met uses body mics during the broadcasts/HD performances, but NOT to amplify the singers in the house.
spectaculaire Siegmund, expressif sans grandiloquence, bravo
Exceptionnel. Merveilleux. Merci.
