I remember seeing this video on MTV Headbanger's ball back in the 1980s and I was in my early teens letting you and I'm 54 and my wife is 56 we love this group she remembered watch this video on MTV Headbanger's ball also we have been married for 24 years now and we still love each other we will never leave each other at all we are in Gods hands
Met the band in 1983 at the Oklahoma City airport. Their bus broke down in New Mexico and they flew in for their show. I met the band at the Avis Car Rental desk, got all of their autographs ( I still have them) and saw the concert. They opened for Iron Maiden but, in my opinion, put on a much better show. Jeez! 41 years ago!
She used to be an iron horse Twenty years ago Used to bring the mail to me Through the ice and snow I've sat alone and watched her Steaming through the night Ninety tons of thunder Lighting up the sky She was a princess of the night I saw the writing on the wall She was a princess of the night I take a ride across the sky Speeding, sparks like lightning Engine working hard Furnace on the foot plate Shining in the night Iron striking metal The sound of racing steel It's all I ever want to hear It's music to my ears She was a princess of the night I saw the writing on the wall She was a princess of the night I take a ride across the sky She was a princess of the night I saw the writing on the wall She was a princess of the night I take a ride across the sky Ninety tons of thunder Lighting up the sky Steaming red hot pistons See the wheels flash by Hear the whistle blowing Streaking down the track If I ever had my way I'd bring the princess back one day She was a princess of the night I saw the writing on the wall She was a princess of the night I take a ride across the sky (sky, sky, sky)
I just saw these guys on May 13 of 2024. They still rock, and then some. Biff likes to offer cold water to the fans; he takes the caps off of the water bottles and then tosses them out to the crowd🤣. I looked down for a moment, and he nailed me! 😹 I was thirsty, and I managed to salvage half of it. 🙂 What a great show; these guys and Uriah Heep!
Just saw them with Uriah Heep 2 days ago (on May 13). What a great show! Biff was an absolute hoot (one-liners, and throwing water bottles out to the crowd after taking the caps off🤣...I got nailed with one😹) , and he still belts it out. Nigel; at age 71 plays some of the fastest and most aggressive drums I've seen of anyone; 71 going on 17? 🙂
Never achieved the dizzy superstar stratosphere heights they were destined for...but remained true to their grass roots for all their career....god the stories these guys had written and spoken about them sex drugs rock n roll ( only foreplay) GUD on ya guys!!!!
I remember listening to this tune the first time when I was in Germany "1982" it was a big hit then a couple years later it came to the US and that song still kicking ass now.
SAW THESE DUDES IN THE 80'S OLD MEMORIAL COLISEUM, CORPUS CHRISTI, TEXAS .....THE SMELL OF YESCA EVERYWHERE, IN YOUR FACE HEAVY METAL.....SAXON KICKS ASS!!!!!!!!
I know everyone talks about the guitar riff. It's great no doubt, a classic metal riff. But man, the bass lines and the drums are in sync as one breathing breast in this track.
Crazy Train isn't really about a train, its a metaphor. This is about a train that actually existed in real life. Wheels of Steel began as what would become this song (lyrically) too.
Man what a cool rif. Da nah nah nah nah. Da nah nah nah. She yous to be an iron horse 20 years ago, yous to bring the milk to me through the ice and snow
Great song and could have been a bigger band. However they really needed a styling consultant for better appeal. Some really talented bands have the tunes but the imagery also matters.
I love Saxon, especially this OG era/line up ( way before they split into two different bands ) but I completely agree, their on stage image and even in band promotional shots, is really mismatched! Funny, this is on Tardis’ channel who has a lot of Cheap Trick concert recordings on here, so the first thing that popped into my mind when I looked at the one Saxon guitarist who always wears a baseball cap like a bootleg version of Rick Nielsen! Although Rick had custom made embroidered sweaters and I am sure his caps had some images and words embroidered on them so he had a pretty good image albeit goofy but except for maybe Biff ( way before his current white haired grand papa stage! ; I mean we all grow old and I am no Brad Pitt at 51, hair not too grey mostly brown except streaks, goatee is completely grey so I am not trying to rag ) Saxon’s image in this video and during this era is the NWOBHM/UK version of the Trailer Park Boys! The throw back white fringe wearing biker/hippie/stoner guitarist, the balding bandana wearing rhythm section, the aforementioned fake Rick Nielsen/Satch guy and then there is Biff! The music is what’s most important and Saxon rocked hard during this era! I guess with songs such as Motorcycle Man, this could just be the typical UK biker look of this era not too far removed from the US biker look! Let’s face it, despite bikers being known as tough guys, their image sometimes comes off goofy! I am not sure if Rob Halford ever road a motorcycle further than a few feet on stage before Hell Bent For Leather or Painkiller, but Judas Priest had a way sharper, uniform, biker like, leather and spike image than Saxon! My gaydar was broke as a kid, then as a young adult after moving to SF in the early 90’s to play in the thrash scene there, and realizing a lot of gay men there dress/look like bikers with long ZZ Top beards, Halford’s image/look suddenly made sense to me! Regardless of his sexual orientation, he is way more Metal looking then Saxon ever was or ever will be, after all he is the Metal God! I wish Saxon opened/supported for Priest again like they did during the firepower tour! I saw their 50th anniversary back in September 2021 ( same venue in Youngstown they played at with Saxon ) and while Sabaton is far from being the worst band I have witnessed live, I found their excessive obvious use of backing tapes ( hearing an entire choir when there were only the lead singer, the bassist and guitarist singing into microphones etc. ) to be very annoying plus I like my Power metal darker and less happy sounding ( more King/Fate than Dragonforce, for lack of an example ) Priest/Saxon is a perfect pairing of NWOBHM Royalty! I wouldn’t care if they always toured together! First saw Saxon on the innocence is no excuse tour in 1986, but I wish I was a little older to of seen them a little earlier on, such as during this era! If this is Nigel Glockler in this video, I would like to go back a little further and see Pete Gill since I have only seen him play drums with Motörhead not with Saxon who I have seen with Nigel a few times! Sorry, I went on a long tangent, just to agree with you that their image sucked, lol!
The guitarist looks like he’s a roadie that just took over the evening’s guitar responsibilities after the lead guitarist called in sick. Different than Judas Priest, Iron Maiden and others he doesn’t have that Guitar God look. He looks like a fill in.
Can someone help me out. If memory serves correctly , it was over 30 years ago , wasn't there a third single (MTV video) for this album. Princess of the Night , Denim and Leather , what , or was a third. Thanks
Saxon is a Heavy Metal work horse, under appreciated but never disappoints. Long live the mighty Saxon.

Twenty years ago
Used to bring the mail to me
Through the ice and snow
I've sat alone and watched her
Steaming through the night
Ninety tons of thunder
Lighting up the sky
She was a princess of the night
I saw the writing on the wall
She was a princess of the night
I take a ride across the sky
Speeding, sparks like lightning
Engine working hard
Furnace on the foot plate
Shining in the night
Iron striking metal
The sound of racing steel
It's all I ever want to hear
It's music to my ears
She was a princess of the night
I saw the writing on the wall
She was a princess of the night
I take a ride across the sky
She was a princess of the night
I saw the writing on the wall
She was a princess of the night
I take a ride across the sky
Ninety tons of thunder
Lighting up the sky
Steaming red hot pistons
See the wheels flash by
Hear the whistle blowing
Streaking down the track
If I ever had my way
I'd bring the princess back one day
She was a princess of the night
I saw the writing on the wall
She was a princess of the night
I take a ride across the sky
