I was there too at bingley hall Stafford for the heavy metal barn dance also there 1980 to see Saxon support rainbow what a fantastic band seen them in every tour since
Slaughterhouse 6 that's infidel zombie comment not mine I have always said Saxon were one of the best bands to come out of our country they were underrated by the music press who preferred def leppard God help us they were the pits worst band I have seen ever
I remember a colleague introducing me to Saxon some years ago and I was like "oh is this a new metal band?" Color me surprised when I learned they've been around about as long as Iron Maiden. Truly a special band that has somehow slipped through the cracks.
This band wrote some of THE best heavy metal songs on the early 80'S (and I'm a Maiden fan) but they suffered from image problems, so they never became as big as Maiden but they could easily have been.
Not only that, Bruce Dickinson is a hell of a businessman. IM is not what it is just because of Bruce's singing talents, but he also helped to create Iron Maiden product that became popular.
I’ve always said this about Saxon. They weren’t MTV darlings because of their look. Nothing personal against Dawson and Quinn who were losing their hair but it wasn’t marketable to the US market which is where they never got a foot hold. Sure plenty of die hard Metal-heads loved them here in America. But mainstream Metal markets ignored them. And they were getting screwed by their management too. That’s a very big factor. I still love them!
They were/ are in a different league to Deaf Leopard ,but never reached the heights they did .Poor management or record company that could not see how could they really were
I always thought they never produced anything deemed “radio friendly”. Priest has breaking the law and living after midnight, Maiden had run to the hills and number of the beast, to be honest most of that album is pretty accessible to the masses. Saxon don’t really have anything like that though. A shame as I think a lot of their riffs are superior and this song has one of the best of the era / genre.
I was lucky enough to see early Saxon on the Eagle Has Landed tour, in their home town Sheffield at the City Hall, was way back in the early 80s. Cheater was the support. I was about 10yo. Amazing experience, a memory that lasts forever.
I had no idea there was a promo and it looks fantastic over 40 years later and I know this edit is actually the version that appears on the A Collection of Metal compilation that was the first Saxon CD I ever bought 20 years ago. Saxon indeed remain one of the most iconic British Heavy Metal bands of all time. Their NWOBHM era classic albums (such as Wheels of Steel, Strong Arm of the Law and Denim and Leather) have aged like very fine wine.
Graham Oliver has to be one of the most underrated guitar players of the NWOBHM period. He actually wrote some very memorable and dare I say it catchy riffs.
That guy twirl his black Guitar around twice good heads up driving Rock these English Bands had it they were brief tho with a few hits not like Uriah Heep whose history is crazy chopping and changing alot but still Rocking i think the era and magic the style of Saxon i think when Def Leppard started they got abit of their style and a few others anyways blessed to be part of the greatest decade of all time never to forget miss it so much oh hail the 80s
It is a strange concept to write a song about, I wonder how they settled or how the idea came about to write it about the North American airport power outage in 1965 that led to the Scandinavian airlines flight to be unable to land for many hours, epic song, I love planes and they seem to have captured the mood of 747’s lost in the night “strangers” the tension is captured very well
@@miguelrubiorincon3904 a major power outage resulted in that particular flight and many others to be stranded in the sky with no way to talk to air traffic control, if you imagine any airport there are multiple planes in the sky at any one time and it was pure chaos, nobody could land by sight as it was too dangerous so they went round and round and were re routed to other destinations if fuel was an issue, it was bad visibility too which didn’t help otherwise they could have attempted landing by sight
Happy Birthday Graham Oliver born on July 6, 1952. He is an English guitarist who was born in Mexborough, South Yorkshire. He was a founding member in the heavy metal band Saxon from 1976 to 1995. After being fired from Saxon in 1995, he initially reformed his old band Son of a Bitch with former Saxon bassist Steve Dawson and drummer Pete Gill. - en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Graham_Oliver
My favorite band of the nwobhm I love iron maiden(i hace 3 cd),judas, def leppard(i have a funko pop of vivian campbell) but Saxon its my favorite band of traditional heavy metal
God do I wish these days were here again, really miss real music where they sing not rap or whatever and they played instruments and it had a tune and rhythm.
FINALLY saw them in 2017 with UFO and Jared James Nichols. Just by chance I got to briefly meet Biff and Doug Scarratt and they were extremely cool, gracious gents. What a memorable night and a totally killer show!! 🤘🤘
Fantastic song from a fantastic band just wish they would bring Graham Oliver back in the band he had a much clearer guitar sound than Doug Scarlett loved Steve Dawson to but I think nibbs is a more gifted bass player but would love to see the old boys play even if it was just for a couple of songs been a big fan since 1980- present day got everything Saxon have ever made and never missed a Saxon tour since 1980
So true. Nowadays it’s all giant video screens, lasers and strobes. When it’s like this, to me, it’s more about the music and the band instead of the “flash”. In festivals, yeah maybe necessary but in an arena or hall....nah.
Its Graham oliver on the flying V. Check out hisvintage guitar signature models. The early SG copies are the ones to have before gibson filed a lawsuit to change the shape.
One of the greatest hard rock songs ever made
*New wave of British heavy metal
Absolutely! Long Live Saxon!
Saw them in Queens, NY!
100%
Gimme a break
Judas priest lead the way son..fact
A great Heavy Metal band that has not been recognised enough
Interviewed them on my radio show. Excellent group. So kind and creative! Underrated
Great bunch of guys. I've been friends with Paul since 1988.
I was eternally grateful when they asked if we could support a few shows for them.
The same goes with Riot
I couldn't agree more saw them 5 times in my youth never let me down amazing live band
First show. Opening for AC/DC. 8th grade. Loud as hell. I ended up flying airplanes for a living.
That's a badass life story.. hell ya
Did y'all have this song playin on loop for your passengers
Bitchen!(Los Angeles slang for cool as fuck)
Was your call sign, Saxon? 😂😂🤘🎸🎸🤘
I have always loved this song. One of the coolest riffs ever!
To be in the crowd when this song starts is an electric experience. Brilliant live band yet still massively underrated.
Stafford Bingley Hall, 1981, bangin' - great memories
Like Accept, horrifically underrated and not given the breaks other bands have, ie, Judas Priest..
I was there too at bingley hall Stafford for the heavy metal barn dance also there 1980 to see Saxon support rainbow what a fantastic band seen them in every tour since
Not sure what you mean by underrated .They had plenty of chart success in the 80s with their albums and singles.

In 1981, I was buying a motorbike from a dealer and who pulled up on his motorbike, biff, good times,he gave me a signed photo 👍👊

I miss the 80s! My teens went way too fast!! RIP 80s!!
I'm from Mexico and I find Saxon stuff on 1984 and I will never stop loving this Saxon forever
Viva Mexico! Me Madre es de Mexico!!
Absolutely one of the greatest bands of NWOBHM!!!
Brilliant seen them few times. Biff, Graham, Dobby, Paul and Pete great line up. Far better than some of the newer heavy metal groups.

@@LOTPOR0402 Def chief not Deaf. They dropped the "a" as an homage to Led not Lead Zeppelin.

This song has the best opening ever. Long live Saxon!!
a fantastic song by a fantastic band.

British Metal at it's Finest! SAXON Rules! \m/\m/
Seen them a few times, but in the tent at the IoM TT in the 90's was just excellent. Was right at the front :)
Some many Giants of Rock bands plus. Other bands of different genres came out of a small island like UK.... unbelievable. Creative country
Desde España. SAXON SIEMPRE LLENÓ DONDE FUE.
One of my fave bands & my fave song. Still have great affection for those great days of the early 80s.

Watched this line up in the Caird Hall Dundee Late 1980, magic.
i was lucky to see Saxon when they first started out at the Victoria hall stoke .what a night
I was in the crowd that fateful night when they supported motor head what a night and I haven't missed a tour yet
awesome song....1982 was quite the tour! This is Scandinavian 101!! Saxon Iron Maiden '82 tour
Got to be 1 of the greatest intros ever
Absolutely brilliant! Best version. ❤️
This was the best lineup with Dawson on bass ❤️
Now that's what you call a rock tune 😎👍👍
Along with Smoke On The Water, 747 is one of the best narrative story rock songs !!
Goosebumps everytime
I'm glad to have owned this classic track on vinyl.
747s were so damn cool. The last one that I saw was a Korean Cargo in like November
This was the first record I bought, a classic 👍

Never knew Bobby Ball was in saxon.
biff byford. fronting. and the spandex is just as it should be. saxons vs the normans. that's worthy of mention also.
