Wow, you created a beautiful piece of work.
You did a creat job putting the video together, no explaining just some great music. Picture is worth a thousand words.
Really enjoyed watching you build that beautiful chair. Thanks for sharing your skills.
In Missouri, Jack
First time viewing, will not be my last. Your skills are inspiring, very well done sir.👏👏👏
Awesome to hear. Thanks, Jim
I have seen more hand tools in this video than I had known hand tools
Beautiful...thoroughly enjoyed the entire thing dude.
A kickass comment by a kickass duke.
Perfection!! As always perfect!!! Thank you for the video! Waiting for the next your projects!!
Thanks, getting started on the next, shortly
Well done thanks for cheering
gorgeous chair.......even better video....or the other way around......can't decide.......either way.....thank you!
Either way is fine by me. ha
Love the progression of the projects you are building....Can't wait for your next choice.
Tony Freson the slow progression is a great part of woodworking. Each project taking something from the previous one.
@@bigben380 I just retired from a job as a toolmaker so I know what you mean. You slowly build skills. I am a lifelong wood working enthusiast. I am just finishing the low back version of the same chair. I am really excited to have more time to add to my woodworking skill set. Thanks for making time to chat Ben. I know how valuable your time is!
@@tonyfreson7668 The low back is the chair that Sam Maoof said was his only chair he ever built that was done. The only chair that he would not change a thing on. When I lived in Boston, I went to the Museum of Fine Art to measure the Maloof chair that I was going to build, and by mistake they brought out the low back. So that is the chair that I modeled all of my shapes and curves off of. A great design, the low back. In the end, I almost wish that I would have built that instead. Oh well, maybe next time. Let me know how your comes out. Would love to hear about the process. The shaping was the one part that I drastically underestimated about building one of his chairs.
Really beautiful work Ben!
Thanks, Dave
Stunning.
Thanks
I haven't seen this much craftsmanship since watching violin videos. You should be teaching. Curious as to why you don't use the Sam Maloof oil finish and then the oil/wax finish.
Beautiful chair. :)
great work n video
Très inspirée !
Time, skill, know how, and materials, i bet this will cost a good penny.
it ended up on a wonderful and styley chair, congrats! How long do you think it take you to make one like this without having to film it?
Thanks for watching. It would probably take 4-6 weeks to compete. Half of that might be the sculpting alone. A LOT of sculpting.
@@bigben380 now i see how this pieces can get very expensive on etsy.
I recently bought the plans/templates to build a Maloof style rocker and low back chair. This will be my first attempt. Do you have any advice on avoiding mistakes for a beginner? Great job on the video! You have a new subscriber.
Hey Kevin, Thanks for watching. You're going to love the process of these chairs. Things that helped me were the test pieces. I practiced cutting the joint before hand, on a piece of scrap milled to the same dimension. This helped work out the kinks beforehand. I used this same thought process for the shaping. The arms, and where the legs transition to the seat were tough, so doing them on a sample piece at first helped a lot, especially when it came to figuring out which shaping tools worked best for each application. One tool that I made on the spot was an extension to a round rasp. I took one of the cheap, hollow rasps with the handle and cut off the handle, then epoxied in a dowel that was the same size at the inside to use as the handle. This gives you a handle that is the same-ish size as the rasp. It made it a lot easier to get into hard to reach places (which there are a lot of with these chairs). Go slow and have fun.
Nice
I’d love to know how many hours went into making this. I can spend upwards of 20 hours on something as simple as a kitchen stool, can only imagine this...
It's hard for me to keep track of hours on these types of project. Most of the furniture I build is worked in amongst the work day, in which I build garden gates. I built this chair over the course of about 2 months, working mornings and evening, before and after the work day. To take a guess, I would say between 100 and 150 hours.
Ben Prowell thanks for the reply, it’s good to know. I feel like time spent is an element missing from a lot of project videos
👍👍
👏👏👏
nice work ben, sexy chair
Thank you
