Hi Steve. Two things. One, My plastic tether ring came off my gas cap. It's still connected to the door and in one piece, but the ring came off the gas cap. Any easy way to re-attach it? Or do you suggest buying a whole new set? Two, speaking of which, I got this same check engine error code. Although my gas cap (without the tether) seems to be clicking and locking just fine, do you think this has anything to do with it or is it just a coincidence? I will have my mechanic check the canister purge valve if after I clean and/or install a new gas cap the check engine light stays on for over a few days.
Hi Sir I have a mitsubishi galant 02 and P0456 always comes up goes away here and there but now staying on. Smoked it no solution didn't find any smoke took to another mechanic inspected car they say everything fine and changed gas cap but still on.. replaced gas cap like 4 times then just got the actual oem part from dealership mitsubishi for $60. then P0401 popped up and changed egr valve as mechanic said is the issue, engine light went away for 3 months but popped back up again with P0456. Is the issue i guess the evap canister vent valve or the purge valve. Any suggestions or help this code is a headache.. Thank you for your help..
Is it mandatory that you delete the codes after doing the repair? I wanna make sure that I actually fixed the problem would the engine light go off after a certain amount of driving if I did in fact fix the problem?

If its not he purge valve and not the gas cap then check on top of the fuel tank where the white nipple comes out and its hooked to the fuel line. Being that its plastic the nipple connector can crack.

Or what may be the issue? Approximately 16 in city, and barely 21 on highway, when it’s stated to get 21 city and appx 30 highway. I want to fix the issue ASAP. Thank you in advance. Btw I’ve had another 2007 es350 Lexus, and never had this problem, I believe a full tank was around 330-370 miles per full tank.

Hi Shameer, while it is best to double check if there's any other code that registers along with P0456, inspecting the evap system including the purge valve, line, and canister is recommended.
@@nondainc changed the purge valve just now. P0456 was the only error. It was sucking a lot of air and making hiss sound even when i disconnected the electric cable going into it. Seems like it was stuck on open position. Will reset the code and see what happens now.
@@chriswilliams2652 the error didn't come back. The problem was with the canister purge valve. I bought a used one for very cheap and it works fine. No more fuel vapors smell and fuel average also back to normal again.

Hi Eduardo, after you've corrected the cause of the issue, then you can clear the code out. If another code is present, you will need to have it diagnosed and corrected before you can clear the codes.

This code came on my 2014 mustang gt, already changed the purge valve. This car has no gas cap. Cleaned that area either way and the code eventually came back on after a reset. Now what??
Possibly yes. If the issue will continue to persist, check the purge valve solenoid for any issue or the charcoal canister for leak then reset the code. Hope it helps!
I have the same code but with the word permanent next to it iv gotten 2 smoke evap test and passed I got a O ring changed and bought a OEM gas cap every mechanic tells me they can’t find anything else wrong and I have a emissions test coming up I have 2019 Honda hrv any one else have this issue

Hey this code showed up for my 2016 Dodge Charger SXT. I believe it might be an actual leak because when I parked it in my garage I actually smelled the gas fumes. Should I replace the fuel vapor pump and clear the check engine light to see if that works?

Hi Mike, try cleaning the gas cap with the WD-40 Cleaner. Check the purge valve's functionality and replace with a new canister purge valve if necessary.

Hi Daby, to prevent comebacks, kindly ensure to implement a fuel filler neck inspection into your regular vehicle maintenance.
What did you find and how did you identify it was your fuel filler neck?

I've replaced the gascap 5x and my mechanic says it's not the valve...maybe I just need a step by step tutorial on how to do it myself.

Hello, make sure first that the gas cap is securely fastened/tightened, and shouldn't have leaking purge valve.

Hi Eduardo, after you've corrected the cause of the issue, then you can clear the code out. If another code is present, you will need to have it diagnosed and corrected before you can clear the codes.
The code will eventually go away by itself, keep in mind it can take hundreds of kilometers.
It Says it take 10 - 20 cycles, a cycle is a when you turn the car on, on some older vehicles it takes 20-50 Miles
I would clear the code. So if it comes back you know it is not fixed. It will go away on its own but why wait?
On the wrangler if, you disconnect the negative terminal for 20 minutes it clears the code.

mechanic did the smoke test but couldnt find anything other than 2 very worn out hoses. 06 jeep liberty with 170k miles.
