  • I review and give my thoughts on the Fujifilm X100F vs the Ricoh GR II and which is the best street photography camera. Which should you buy for street photography? Both the Fuji X100F and GR II serve a purpose. Both are compact, easy to use but have a few major differences. The first being the price. The Ricoh GR II is $600 while the Fujifilm X100F is $1,300. There are strengths and weaknesses to both cameras. In the video, I break both down and give my honest thoughts on which I would go with. Which would you want? Let me know if you have any questions or comments down below.

    Note: I got two comments from some people who didnt understand what I meant with flash "not" being on the Fuji, but like shown, it doesnt have a pop up flash. That's all. It has the flash, obviously, above the lens but like the Ricoh, on camera's are awful. Get something external if possible.

    Best review of the two cameras after looking at sooo many similar reviews. Held both in the camera shop, came out with the Ricoh GRII. Months after, still very happy with the decision. Image quality, portability and handling is top notch for an everyday carry camera. Owned a GM5, EM10 II, RX100iii, LX10/15, Nikon D3200+35mm. Ricoh GRII is still better than all these for what I need for a bring anywhere, discreet, quiet, high quality camera. YMMV.

    I've had many types of compact camera over the years (as well as FF SLRs), but the Ricoh is the most flexible and most enjoyable camera I have ever owned. It just feels so good in the hand, and the black finish is ideal for street photography. Play to its strengths and you'll have a great time with it.

    I own both. I recently upgraded to the x100F from the x100S. I preferred the GRII to the x100s but the 100F makes it a close race. For Street, I prefer the FRII. For everything else, I like the Fuji. The other issue is portability. My daily carry camera is the GRII which I put in my pocket.

    For me, I would take the 100f for size, upgrades, sharpness, and that Fuji special sauce film simulations. The Fuji 100 line is one of those camera lines that will go down as iconic in the digital age...but that's just my 2 cents worth.

    I have never own any x100, but I just purchased a GRII, part of the reason was after watching your video. I can only compare it with Leica M9/M240 and Lumix GM5. I like the GR for what it does, purely a street tool. However, I think the build quality can be improve, and I am not comparing to the Leica. I think the buttons and shutter can be more firm, to provide a more sure click while I am taking the photos. The GM5's build quality is good, but it does not have the same setting for easy street shooting, I pretty much have to rely on autofocus.
    Thanks for the great videos!

    The thing I loved about my x70... was that it was perfect size to put in my pocket. Perfect size to be discreet and the frame just fits a bit more. The closest thing I can think of in-terms of an upgrade would be the GR3 or an x100f... I'm leaning towards GR3 but one thing I'm worried is if i'll miss the colour science of fuji. Love the deep shadows and colours. Never had Ricoh before so not sure if the colours will stand up. And yeah, mostly street photography or travel pics for me.

    Nice review, thanks. I traded an X100S for a GRII and for the most part I’ve not regretted it. I’m about to trade the GRII for an X100F for one reason: my near distance vision isn’t good enough to use the screen and I need a (diopter adjusted) viewfinder and physical controls. I’m really going to miss that pocketability though. :/

    FWIW, I used to own the X100S and loved it *dearly*. However, I picked up a GRII for the simple reason that I could put it in my front jeans pocket and take it with me everywhere, *all the time*. Having said that, I love the Fuji format so much I also picked up an X-Pro2 for when I'm out intentionally for the purposes of taking photos. So X-Pro2 for photoshoots, GRII at *all* other times. Perfect solution. :)

    Great review. I love the Ricoh too. But I got the Fuji and both adaptor lenses for the retail price thinking I could sell it if I didn't like it with minimal loss. I really like having the option of the extra focal lengths would probably not buy the tcl (50mm equiv. for my use) but I use the wcl (28mm equiv.) a lot. Raw files seem to have more dynamic range in the fuji.
    If you like 28mm and value pocketablility Ricoh is the way to go.
    I agree with you about better Ricoh having handling out of the box. I purchased a leather case which helps and will get a thumb grip when available for the Fuji.

    i've just switched from a ricoh gr (1) to fuji x100f. i used the ricoh for 5 years and absolutely loved it. the only problem was reliability. the lens barrel has stuck on me three times so far, expensive repairs meant i have ended up paying for a whole other camera in the years i've used it. looking around the net i don't see too many complaints about this issue though, so maybe i got a dud piece. it's on intermittent freeze now, with the camera sticking on startup with the lens barrel out, and i've sometimes spent up to an hour removing the battery, simultaneously pressing the shutter on start up etc. unreliable. so it's fuji from here on. i went for x100f over the x70 mainly for the sensor. here's hoping lumping out the extra cash is worth it. any tips on addressing the ricoh problem would be much appreciated, i still love that camera!

    I own a GR II and a X100F. To me they're apples and oranges, especially due to their respective price points.
    A more fair comparison would be the Fujifilm X70; you're talking about a $100-ish difference in street price there. FWIW, I also own a X70. :)
    For purely street photography, the GR II's limits are also its strengths - it's ridiculously easy to compose and get fantastic candids out of it. The X70 more or less nods to the GR II and then goes far past it in features - the articulating touch screen alone is worth the extra $100.
    Both cameras are capable of exceptional SOOC jpegs - it comes down to whose jpegs you like. In my experience, I've found I don't need to do nearly as much post production on Fujifilm files, but your mileage may vary.
    In short, in 16MP pocketable and stealthy street cameras, I don't think you can go wrong with the GR II or the X70. The X100F, although absolutely pocketable and more than capable as a street photography camera (and my intended use for mine) is really targeted at a more expensive market than the GR II or X70.

    • @benw2751
      @benw2751 Před 6 lety

      Ken Schuller you nailed it. Only thing is Ricoh GR has a built in ND filter. Also the lack of lens cap makes it even more pocketable. The x70 also has a mic in though so between that and the flip screen it’s much better suited for video. Tradeoffs.

    My father has the Ricoh, while I have the X100s(i can't justify the upgrade cost to an F just yet), so I've shot both. Jpegs are really a matter of taste, I prefer the colors of the Fuji. Also, although it is bigger, I prefer the ergonomics of the X100 series as well. No viewfinder on the Ricoh without losing the hot-shoe is a big negative for me. I HATE using the rear screen on cameras to compose an image. Having started with manual film cameras(Pentax K1000), I like the extra external controls of the Fuji as well. My only real gripe about the Fuji is that while the firmware updates are awesome, they cant fix the battery life on my older X100s.

      the x100t for the price, isnt worth it since its close to the price of the newer faster tech. Both are still great cameras, but if you want the used option, the x100s is probably the better option for the price.

    If you don't mind the lack of EVF, the GRII is a better camera IMHO. It actually fits in a pocket and it's very discrete. Image quality is also a bit better on the Ricoh and the ergonomics mop the floor with the fuji. I sold the x100f and kept the GRII.

  • @chirag4
    @chirag4 Před 7 lety +4

    Though GR II is Aging and needs an upgrade this year before it gets too late for Ricoh company, yet, it is a better value at less than half the price of X100F, and also is lighter & smaller (truly pocketable unlike Fuji). Some people also find Fuji Files having waxy skin tones, and RAW editing difficult as well. Like Sony RX1RII is the most compact Fx camera, GRII is the most compact Dx Camera. For street, i wish Ricoh would make a full frame GR with K-1 sensor, which is less likely to happen. Just saying !!

    • @stumpycatvm7115
      @stumpycatvm7115 Před 7 lety +1

      Chirag Parikh ricoh needs to get going, no more crop Slr types like the K.....whatever, upgrade the Gr, make sure its the same precision 28/21 combination, increased reliability, There engineers are a niche group, I would bet the recent political kerfuffell between pentax and pentax ricoh was from them not funding a new Gr, we may be waiting awhile.

    • @chirag4
      @chirag4 Před 7 lety +1

      agreed, GR & GR-Users, both are suffering due to the scuffle between ricoh & pentax. If they bring something like an Fx version of GR, it would be competing straight with RX1R-II at far more affordable price, and it would be future proof, considering how GR is cheaper, and possibly under-priced, as opposed to Fuji & Sony being over-priced. I would buy such a bigger sensor Ricoh in an instant, ahead of any compact Fx Sony. Since GR is such a loveable & user-friendly design/model, i am sure, its larger format would make Ricoh Fans & Pentaxians happier seeing their company fulfil their reasonable demand & expectation of a compact Fx mirrorless. It could be a street shooter's dream camera. Even Canon & Nikon are looking to enter Fx mirrorless market, and it would augur well for Ricoh to take a plunge in that direction, now.

    • @Eric_Rossi
      @Eric_Rossi  Před 7 lety +1

      Well mirrorless wise, Ricoh is already ahead of Nikon/Canon, so if they just make a few more improvements, mainly lens wise and af speed thats a clear winner.

    i have both camera, to be honest i think ricoh wins on ergonomics, ease of use, pocketability (fits in your shirt pocket). Even though ricoh's jpeg is pretty good. I have to disagree with you, the x100f jpeg is insanely much much better, even in bnw. I shoot film hp5 & trix most of the time. The acros simulation in x100f with the right settings, could take a picture that's almost as good as film. but i still keep ricoh gr as my every day camera due it's size.. But it was always zipped in the one of the most secure pouches of the bag. It's travelled with me to more than 8 countries. I've never experienced dust but only read about it in online forums. Now I carry the GRII with a sleeve. Also, I sold the GR to a friend who was extremely impressed by it. I didn't sell it cause it had dust or flaws. Hope this gives you the confidence that these amazing cameras deserve. Thanks.

      More like dust in the viewfinder of the Fuji x100f. Owned mine for like 3 weeks and then the aperture lens got sticky, sent it back to Fuji but lost a lot of confidence in their QC process. At that price, one shouldn’t have to use gaffer tape or bondable rubber to keep dust out of the viewfinder which is noted on blogs about the x100f. Sad thing is love the x100f but it’s hard to justify that pricing and those malfunctions.
