You asked for it... "IS THE RICOH GR II STILL GOOD ENOUGH? Or should I get the Ricoh GR III??" This is by far the question I get asked the most. Today we are finally putting the two compact shooters to the test!

@@Chida_o_0😂😂😂 I think so haha
Samuel L. Streetlife next video idea?
Samuel Where are you in Germany ? HAMBURG ?
if GR(I) and GR(II) are identical, except for the wifi, why not just get GRII as its newer? Positive film is still probably the same on both?, or is this a price wise decision for you?
You two have great chemistry on screen, a pleasure to watch :) Also appreciate all the different dynamic filming of your videos, makes it more fun to watch than just a talking head in a studio
I bought my GR a few months ago, and I enjoyed watching you guys giving so much love to the first iteration of this lineup, most of the attention is given to the II and the III. Even though at the time I bought my camera, I wish I had the money to get at least the II, right now I could not be happier with my GR.
I love the little sight gags with him watching you on the phone, and the eyes bugging out with the lenses. It's awesome to see you having fun making these, love it!
Loving your channel. Always been a fan of the GR line. In fact I’ve just brought another GRII, along with a X100F. Best of both worlds. I see Bello has the same set up. I do enjoy watching you two.
Enjoyed this one a lot! Your videos just keeps getting better and better. Been a long time follower since your first POV videos in Japan. I must say, you and Bello are quite a tandem!
Had a great time watching this! Love my GR2
What a great video and for dealing with the most IMPORTANT question of the 1st world - I will refer to it again. Loved the banter!
Thanks Graham :)
Fan of the channel, came across a used GR2 used like-new and jumped on it from remembering this video. Keep the great content coming.
Cool video, subscribed... There is one thing I have to mention to ALL GR users, present and future, just be cautious with the body screws. They're tiny, and once lost, good luck on finding some this size, one can try to find some miniature screws for electronics on Amzn but all together having spoken with Ricoh US Camera department, they have no replacement whatsoever to offer anywhere and the only way would be to send the camera in their only camera repair location in some mid state, which would be ridiculous cost for a missing screw.
Having recently traveled with my GR II for a couple of weeks in North Cal. I came back and saw 2 screws missing, one of which being on the top near the shutter allows to separate the body parts enough to trigger inability for camera to function normally. So my best advice is "Don't forget to check these tiny screws on regular basis." And I wonder if it would not even be wise to add a micro droplet of blue Loctite to seal them in tightly. For the time being, I moved one of the bottom screws to the top which eradicated the electronic problems that arose when the top got loose because of the missing screw. So far I ordered some assorted tiny screws on Amzn but I don't know if any will fit, so if it didn't happen to you yet, you should anticipate with that stuff as it might bring a very unpleasant situation is this is your main shooter while you travel.
Otherwise the GR II is an awesome camera (little pulling on the blue tint side on base JPEG but a +5 on the yellow white balance Lightroom slider fixes it easy). To me awesome features are the way the menus are set and work. The 2 custom functions are awesome. The preset of set focal distance on demand is a killer feature. 16 MPX on the GR II takes you a long way with the lack of low pass filter BUT before you think of buying a cheap used GR II on eBay (so much cheaper that the GR III... ) there is a couple of things to be mentioned in true favor of the new GR III, not the price though, but the 2 main ones would be... More MPX for cropping and IBIS (In Body Image Stabilization). In deed, despite the APS-C the GR II wasn't beast with high ISO noise so this one will allow you to gain few stops keeping your ISO lower. AND the GR III seems better with noise than the GR I and II despite having more megapixel, but even aside of pushing the ISO, that camera body is so small and light that shake comes fast vs the grip of a heavier, more stable DSLR, and those cameras render so crisp images that it's sad to see them sabotaged by handheld blur.
So the GR III loose the flash (Sad for the foreground flowers you want to flash fill-in or those evening people pics) but if I had to choose, being more landscape oriented often handheld when on the fly, I would leave the flash for the IBIS system and better noise. I regret the little Exposure Compensation button gone on the GR III too. One more thing to consider for those having invested in the GR I or II wide angle ADD-on lens, be aware that it's not compatible with the new GR III for which now the wide angle lens add-on is a different product and the old one can't be adapted to the new system.
There is much more to say about this very interesting camera, like time lapse, all kind of bracketing and so forth and so on, but rather than boring you with deep details that more extensive reviews will unveil better that I can, I suggest you give a look t these 2 links where some guy have posted high res pics with many ISO settings for both the GR II and GR III. To me, the GR III seems to be step up in noise quality, but still I think that realistically, we see some degradation after 640/800 ISO in those cameras in skies, so that's where I would stop it for landscape, and indoor gives pretty nice rendering up to higher ISO, but here same, I think 1600 is probably the max you want to push it if you want decent printable pics. BW pictures is another story where ISO can be pushed more. Under these links, I add 3 links of single shots at different ISO taken with my own GR II (100 outdoor, 800 outdoor, 1600 indoor). (Got my GR II for 365.00 on eBay, flawless over a year ago). The first image shows how playful this camera can be :

Love this guys! so much good content! I think Ricoh GR community is the Best one. You guys are Rocking it! 🔥
I really enjoyed this video. Your skills and humor are great. Thank you!
Thaks for this video, it has been funny, education and with the best street camera. Best wishes from Czech Republic!
Thank you!!
Many thanks for discussing low light and nighttime performance. Many reviewers omit this very important aspect of photography.
Thank u for re-affirming my lack of a need for an upgrade. My GR1 will suit me just fine 😀
I love the results in extreme low light situacion on the GR. Nice colors also! 👌
I bought a GR2 today. Thank you guys for this video. 🙌🙌🙌
I was watching another video earlier and thought "I wonder if there is a good GR II to GRIII comparison video." I went back to the CZcams home page and it showed me this video and said it was posted 2 hours ago. Perfect :)
Haha awesome timing!
LOVE THIS VIDEO! IT IS INFORMATIVE... YET VERY FUNNY!!!!💯😭😭😭
Great video!! I’ll be buying my Ricoh gr3 in like 2 weeks! I’m excited
Nice!!! Have fun and enjoy! :)
I wonder which I could buy.... because I had a GRD 1 on 2009 and I'm nostalgic. Your video is pretty good, and I'm about to find a GRII for second hand. Thank you from France.
I loved my GR1 for three or four years. Then I got a small hair inside it that ruined all the shots on one trip. I sent it off to Germany for repair. It came back but the video was not working right after. Then I realised you dont use a GR for video. I ordered a GR3 anyhow, but it never came. So since then I have had a couple of big trips with the GR and it is behaving well for stills. I am happy with it for now.
Brilliant opener! 😁
After watching your videos, I now am the proud owner of a GRiii absolutely love it. Thank you for inspiring me massively, keep up the amazing work.
Amazing! Congrats and happy shooting!
Great video as always. I continue to learn so much from your work. Thanks!
My pleasure!
Great video, really. It's always hard to compare old and new cameras, with the GR line this is way harder than the other brands lines. "Do you want a GR? Take it the one closer to your budget".
I have a little question: where I can find that little album you took with you as a small portfolio/book? Thank you.
And by the way, this is becoming my favorite CZcams bromance. I'm jealous I can't have a photographer friend like you guys lol
tremolo3 so true
@@imAnsar He has many photofriends. Nobody can resist his charm, it seems.
Haha thank you! Grateful to have a friend like Bello.
I watched this great video twice and after two days (today) I bought a ricoh gr ii second hand almost brand new, aaand I LOVE IT!!
Man i actually really really appreciate this video. I have the x100v finally, but have still been considering a gr3, 2, or 1. I have owned the gr i before, but it was a bit problematic and had some dust on the sensor. I love the portability of the ricoh's and sometimes taking out my x100v feels like everyone around me knows I'm about to take a picture haha. So ya. Have been wondering about the quality and low light and ibis of the griii vs the gr i. But ya the quality of the gr i was always top notch and yes the positive film was gorgeous. But im always out at night and feel like I could really take advantage of that better low light and ibis with the gr3. Anyhow thanks again for making this video
Same with me, i went from XPROs line to X100V to GR3. Same thought about people notice us taking pictures. You wont regret it i think.
Still got both. Think you made good points. GR feels more balanced in my hand, back button focussing is much easier, but I always missed ibis on this cam. Also the lcd on the III is much better. Both are very good cameras.
that may be the best opening I've seen.... very nice
I really like the idea of living with your photographs! Your plastic folder seems very nice, do you know where I could purchase one? I can’t seem to find something similar...
Thank you for your help!
And by the way I absolutely love your videos ❤️
thanks for the shout out Sam! - Im still shooting my grii and waiting for the gr iv when they put back the flash!
Yeah... That could be another 5 years though...
@@alanalain4884 sure, im in no rush
The very first part was hilarious. Samuel: I find it difficult to believe that you don’t have or have not extensively used the 8.1MP GR1. It’s somewhat primitive in a lovable way. So many constraints = such strong nurturing of creativity. 5 stars here. Thanks.
Since I am shooting everything on a mid priced samsung smartphone I think the GR1 would be a great upgrade and it is more in my budget. Really enjoy your channel.
nice one guys!
Das war richtig gut!
Finally! Samuel just gave us the answer we've all been waiting for! Now sell us those straps!
In the making!!! :)
I LOVE YOU MAN. CHEERS FROM MEXICO
Was watching this channel for years and tempted to try out GR myself. Last week I was deciding between I and III which I tested personally. Finally decided to pick GR I and it failed literally next day with famous stuck shutter on turning on (issue wasn’t there while I was testing it week ago and in first day of owning it myself). While the GR I and II are really great cameras the amount of failed units is huge and I won’t buy anything from this company in future since I found same issue persists even in 3rd gen of apsc gr.
Im gonna buy my first ricoh camera tomorrow the gr II , Im so excited :D
I was looking for a mint Ricoh GR2 for a while and one day just messing around online i check KEH. Found one for $350 and it was immaculate. So far i love it and I use a thumb strap which makes it perfect for incognito street photography.
My favourite duo, Linbello. 😀
Haha.
One of the greatest cameras ever made, great insight.
Agree😄💪
Great video! I ended up deciding on a used GR II instead of a GR III to save a little money. I was curious on your positive film settings for the GR II. I’ve been tweaking to find what I like, but curious what your recommended settings are. Thanks!
Loved this video guys you crack me up 🤣 damn I was set to get a gr2 or 3 and never even considered the mk 1😅 now I have to go back and think what’s a better option and do I need flash. It’s handy to have when going out 🤔I also have the Fujifilm x100f so maybe if I buy the mk 1 then test against each other I’ll decide which one I keep 😁thanks again and Stay safe!
Im in the exact same position right now. Would you mind sharing what your decision was? I heard mk1 is prone to error and the problem is fixed in gr2
It Is wild how little info/content there is about the Ricoh GR. When looking and trying to decide, it was hard to see what the point of bumping up the spending price would be. Also, the GR (one) just seems like it makes sense, for price, usability, not overkill, it seems best. Thank you for making great vids. And for being one of the only people (even though you seem tired of the subject, hahaha) that made it easier to decide for me. Woo!
Haha, happy to have people like you getting value out of my videos so not tired yet! :D And would also day the GR is the best value for money option right now. You just can't buy it new anymore.
Woo! Lovin' deals. Thanks. Yeah, I think your content is relatable and hilareous. And informative too! So thanks.
Do you mind to share the music title/author from 3:30? Great video, love your channel already, so much interesting things here! Hope you are well, greetings from Amsterdam!
Instant like on opening episode.
haha, that intro made me spill milk from my nose... keep it up, dude!
Haha!
Just ordered a GRiii - I still have GR Digital from 2005. It still works - just. Takes about 10 goes to get working...
Thank you! Great video! Love my GR II
Do you use sRGB or Adobe RGB color space in your Ricoh? And do you like to share your settings in positive film effect?
Best street photography duo ever.
I have a GR 1 and X100F, love them. Got to see my first GR 3 today, it’s cool but my GR 1 still goes every where with me.
I replaced the X100F ( I still have it. ) with a Leica Q. It is fantastic to be honest. It is a beast in low light.
Something very cool with all the GR range.
My dream camera is the leica q lol. so jelly. glad you got to get one.
Moneywise de GR I or II. If money is not a problem then the GR III. Thanks for sharing, and stay safe.
This video has very good quality, what camera did you use to shoot it?
Lol. 10 points for being honest being also the Ricoh ambassador ❤️
thank you for making this video! lol
Thanks for this! Now I remember why I bought the GR III, and sold it back.
I have a GR I and am very pleased with it.
I did some image quality comparisons, and found the GR I was better in many cases.
What I really liked on the GR III was image stabilization and the touch screen, but these didn't convince me to keep it instead of the GR I.
What I like on the Gr I and GR III has not: TAV and flash.
One more reason why I kept the GR I: I quite often use the GW-3 21mm adapter. This again is not compatible on the GR III, so I had to buy the new GW-4 which is very expensive.
I had the 3 also and sold it and bought a one again,I also like the images better, and feel more comfortable with it in my pocket all the time if something happens to it I don’t mind.
Loved the dual camera binocs opening scene! Does the 3 have less dust invasion issues than the past versions? I loved my GRII, sorry I sold it. I think I'm going to buy the III instead of getting yet another lens for my Fuji's You guys have too much fun ;)
Internet is full of dust stories for the GR iii sadly
love the video, the vibe and the both camers :D thanks, Samuel!)
Hehe thank you!
Great review!! But the title is GR ii vs GR iii lol while you only used the GR i
The black and whites out of the GR cameras all look great.
How do you print your photos ? I love the idea of keeping photos with you.
The Ricoh GR (first model with aps-c) is the only digital camera I own. Its a great camera and the image quality is amazing.
I have enjoyed a lot your comparison of all apsc sensors GRs, but since I own one, I'd like to have your opinion about the old GRdigital IV and the others old GR digitals. Thanks, your videos are very entertaining to me.
I wish I could try out the GR Digital cameras but I don't have access to them at the moment.
@@SamuelStreetlife If you come to Sardinia I will lend you mine
Super sick intro 😂😂
fell in love with the gr3 until the lens decided to stick out and lock on me after 2 weeks of having it.. probably the best camera i've ever used, but it having defects quickly made me have 2nd thoughts about it.
Ricoh CEO: "Why are we seeing so poor sales numbers for GRIII this month?"
Ricoh sales department: "According to google statistics there is a recent spike in searches for used GR I and GR II models"
Wolfgang Baus: "Sir...you may want to take a look at this youtube comparison from one of our ambassadors..."
Ricoh CEO: "I see... As a preventative measure lets buy quietly all the GRD IV models out from the used market, we can't afford this guy getting his nostalgic hands on one of them.."
😂 haha. I hope they don't mind lol.
@@SamuelStreetlife Luckily Ricoh seems to be the type of company least likely to mind. :) It is a mark of great design when by the specifications list clearly better camera is more like a different version of the same when it comes to user experience.
Also please do a review on GRD IV. Based on the few old articles about it people seem to like the gritty small sensor look it gives but I would love to hear your opinions about it.
@@Taukasauva I have one GRD IV as well I was thinking the same.
it's also possible to recall all the GRii and GRiii from the stories and to leave the only "STREET" edition making street photography in much better way bcos of the ... color of the unusable ring, that I lost during my first week of using my second hand GRii and still able to shoot nice street, protests, rock bands, life photographs :-)
@@Taukasauva I'm sure they don't mind and a new GR1 or GR II user is still a new customer that will eventually want to upgrade to the GR III oder IV :) And I just want to be always honest with my thoughts. I never had the chance to play with the GRD series! If I can get my hands on one I will consider doing a video about it.
At 4:00 hahaha he had to have been waiting all morning to spring that trick.
That intro 😂 Hilarious video all around! I laughed, I cried, I got 2 free months of skillshare.
Haha. Glad you enjoyed the hole package 😂
Was waiting for this video!! Really want the grIII but it's damn expensive!!
Glad to hear that!
I almost got the GRII when I was looking for a compact camera last year. But while I was doing research, I found many people reporting dust issues, so I went with a Fuji instead. But I will get a brand new GRIII eventually, it looks like the perfect street photography camera.
Yeah it's a big problem with all GR's because of that lens design sucking in air everytime it moves out. I think eventually Ricoh has to think about a solution but from what I've heard it is very challenging to seal the body while having the current lens design system.
@@c0ldc0ne I have experienced dust on my first GR but on my GRIII it hasn't occured yet (I think I spotted one dust partical though). So I don't have experience with cleaning my sensor and I'm not sure if they do that.
I hope so, I have just bought the Ricoh GR. First time trying this type of camera.
it will be good enough :) I use my GR (1) all the time and love it
I bought my first GR, a GR 1 just over a month ago. It's amazing. Super capable.
Yeah, I struggled to justify buying version three. I much prefer to buy second hand so I don't mind if I drop or knock it.
I like my GR III. I shoot monochrome JPEG + RAW so the Positive Film is not an issue to me. I also recently got a Fuji x100v and so far I like the GR more. The Fuji feels more like a film camera and I like the option of the viewfinder and the haptics. But it's easier to "lock" the GR in place due to size and weight, the IBIS is also a great addition. Perfect for having it always with you. I also love that the GR uses DNG which I can comfortably edit on iPad or phone.
My conclusion: it doesn't matter which GR, as long as you get a GR. Chose based on your budget :)
Addendum: weather sealing was the reason I got the Fuji. This is really something that worries me with the GRIII on a rainy day.
Good points!!
I am absoloutly agree with you for the sharpness of GR2. I regret it, mine had to much dust on the sensor. I realy prefer image of the GR2 at least !!!
how long for getting dust on the sensor? I'm planning to get one but still worried about that dust issue
Street photography seems fun, and the Ricoh consumer pitch matches a general sentiment.
I have GR, and i'm happy that i find this camera powerful-poket-monster. Inlove with +film, only downside is no wifi, if will make an update, so definitely will be the 2nd edition. #flashisthepower bring back to 4 edition please. And common... let's be honest, everyone loves GR, from the film to the digital era)
Hi Samuel, can you get rid of all the icons in the screen of the gr ii? I wanna see my aperture, speed, iso and grid, just that. Another question, can you set a minimum speed for auto iso? I can't find thw option for that. Nice sincerely video
Hey Samuel, do you think you can get Ricoh to create a negative film simulation for the GRIII?
I'm very shocked how well low light looks on both. I was told by friends to never go above like 3200-6400 on apsc sensors but this opened my eyes
Samuel Do You Recommend Buying One oF The GR Digital Series Cameras Like GRD ii or GRD iii Since This Series oF Cameras Is Kinda Cheap
What Do You Think
Is It Worth Buying To Do Street Photography With
How About You Do An Episode About This Topic …
Thank You
A question...
You and others say that positive film looks a little nicer on GR1 & GRII.
Can settings be changed on GRIII to make positive film look nearer to positive film on GR1 & GRII ?
El mayor problema de la Ricoh GR III es la duración de las baterias, creo que en la proxima Ricoh GR IV tienen que poner una bateria de mayor capacidad.
Yo tengo la Ricoh GR II y la uso todos los dias.
Gracias por el video!
Do you do any post processing for that cinematic look or is it how the pics come out of the camera? 😍
All photographs I showed in this video are straight out of camera :)
Ricoh gr iii camera is incredible. Sam I have a question I currently have a rotolight neo2 is there anyway I could use the gr iii with the flash capability of my neo2?
I could use a Godox tx1 trigger with the neo2 connected with a Godox flash trigger connection cable. Since the Godox tx1 has the ir sensor it would trigger the neo2 flash option. But I would have to purchased a lightpix flash however I would then Have to use two sources of light instead of just the neo2. Plus the extra $75 I would have to spend on the lightpix. I’m sure there’s a way to just use the Ricoh gr iii, Godox tx1, and my rotolight neo2. Could you help me figure this out?
well, I can't say which one i prefer bcos i use the only one of them - GRII. As you described in this video - I love some features they removed in - this exposure compensation up and down buttons are incredible and very understandable. Also, the flash and the lack of image stabilization function are preferable than more Megapickels and Higher ISO. Daido Moriyama photographed the whole of his timeless gallery without GRiii so we can do this also :-)
Yes, totally agree! If the older GR's were good enough for Daido Moriyama, they should be fine for us too :D
Do the GR1/2 have the macro ability that’s on the GR3?
@@Richardincancale yes! Once I noticed was that the GRIII focuses closer before you have to go into macro mode. The GR & GRII need to be in macro mode a little earlier.
Refreshing to have actual street photographers reviewing cameras rather than vloggers.
I would like to see the GR2 updated with IBIS and a new sensor. They should keep the dimensions and the flash!
GR one lens problem and repair at dealer needed $300, so I sold the unit. Now , I do not want to spent on GR III so much money. Now I am without GR.
the question should rather be: "am i even good enough for the GRII?" 😄positive film is really tasty! skillshare you made it XD
That's a good point haha
Yes, I agree based on these photos that the GR has a more pleasing Positive Film than the GR III. GRIII had that yellow cast in the greens
Great video!
I'm still not sure which one to buy???
$1200.00 Canadian for the GRiii, and $750.00 on ebay for the GRii.....
The GR1&2 prices have gone insane. Even in Japan GR2 is selling for only $150 less than GR3 (both pre-owned). In my opinion, if it's your one or main camera, go for the GR3. It's usable in more situations, and you will at least have some warranty protection to fall back on. However, if you're looking for more of a 'specialty' device the GR1/2 is the way to go.
Hi! Great videos for GRists!
I heard lot of people saying in this videos that someone can find easily a GRi for about 280$. Could you tell me where, guys?
I took a walk on eBay and they are all about 450$ from Japan or USA… thanks
that should be your new intro samuel hahahahaha 🤣🔥🔥🔥
FYI Fujifilm VF-X21 External Optical ViewFinder for 28mm FF is on sale now at adorama for 80 bucks.
Hi Samuel, do you have the results yet of the Ricoh GR3 Street Photo competition? - I think your Ricoh friend said they supported with 10 cameras. I entered a few weeks ago, but haven’t heard anything since - Cheers - Peter
I have both the GR2 and GR3. The most useful addition to the GR3 for me was USB-C. It's SO much more convenient than the weird 8-pin UC-E6 USB (no, it's not USB Mini nor USB Micro) of the GR2. Especially for traveling when you can pack a single USB-C charger for all of your electronics.
But after using the GR3 for half a year I went back to the GR2 for now because - as cranky as it may sound and I wished I wouldn't be one of those people - I can't get over the change in positive film effect... It does have that tad more analogue look on the GR2 that everyone likes. And trust me, I've tried to customize the GR3 positive film effect with various settings and WB fine-tuning on the GR3 but it doesn't come close, it looks too clean, too balanced.
As I only shoot high contrast B&W in the evening or at night I don't mind high ISO noise and I learned to love the flash on the GR2 for night shots aswell, so I don't miss image stabilization.
Like Fuji. For me the X-TRANS II Sensor was the Best. Like in the X-T1 :)
Positive film is the same as the gr 1?
I am shooting with samsung phone at the moment I found a GR i for $375 if it is in good condition is that a reasonable price. I enjoy your videos a lot.
My wife got her GR Digital iii in 2010 I got my GR iii in 2020. Ten years later then hers. We both go out and shoot together and we both have snap focus at the same distance. When looking at the photos on our phone, or on instagram and you can't tell what photo was shot with what camera.
I have GR Digital III and GR II and basically you're lying. The Digital range didn't age well at all and the quality looks worse than mobile photography at this point.
@@skypekai please understand the comment your responding to before responding, thanks.
@@TRwalks You said you can't tell which camera is which when looking at in on a phone screen. Either you're blind or you're just trying to big up the GRD when in reality the difference is night and day.
@@skypekai so your saying when scrolling through instagram. If you see a repost photo from GR official, you can tell weather it was taken with the GRD3 or GR3 as soon as you look at it? Come on... Let's be real.
