  • In episode 27 of 30 keys to Unlock the Quran's Meaning, Dr. Shabir Ally highlights the significance of the various modes (ahruf) of recitation for expanding the Quran's meaning. He explains that the modes arose due to the Quran's initial transcription without dots to differentiate similar letters, which were later added for clarity. These variations, encompassing both minor adjustments in vowels and more significant differences in wording, reflect an effort to preserve the Quran's message accurately while accommodating linguistic nuances and oral traditions. Dr. Shabir emphasises that the modes are minor and major variations that do not significantly affect Muslim beliefs or practices. He cites interpretations by Aisha and Ubayy bin Ka'b to show how these variations offer deeper understanding without altering core Islamic teachings. Addressing academic critiques, Dr. Shabir says that the different modes are acknowledged and respected in Islamic scholarship. The discovery of the San'aa Palimpsest provides evidence of the modes of recitation.

Thank Dr Shabir for this episode.
I wish to emphasize that the Uthamic Quran was essentially confirmed by multiple corroboration from memorizors first and foremost. The collected parchments served as a secondary verification especially w.r.t the scripting to be used such that it may support the recitations as memorized by the companions. The Qurayshi recitation became from that point onwards the standard. One of the best references to obtain and review in this regard is:

As usual, Shabir Ally confuses between: readings and abrogation (which he does not believe in).
Then I do not understand why he brings examples of abnormal readings that are not authentic and leaves out the ten mutawatir readings!!
He sows doubt and challenges Islam indirectly!

Diacritical marks simply did not exist when the Quran was composed so these were filled in later but there was no consensus. All of the stories about ahruf and qiraat were invented later to whitewash over this simple fact.

Arabs do not need diacritical marks, because it is there language, but non Arabs need these to read the Quran, so your information are null.
