Why would it be a bad thing if Britain became warmer and drier than it currently is?

  • New predictions suggest that London might, in 60 years or so, be as warm as the south of France. This is described as a ‘terrifying’ prospect, but most of us are unable to see why it should be.

They claimed this nonsense back in the late 1980's saying Britain would have a climate like the south of France by the year 2000. Strange that in the 1970's they said that we would be in a new Ice Age by the year 2000. Wish they would make their tiny minds up.

@@user-ht7jz2bh6e Time magazine 24th June 1974 quoting a number of meteorologists and atmospheric scientists (among them:
climatologist George J. Kukla of Columbia University's Lamont-Doherty Geological Observatory and his wife Helena,
University of Wisconsin's Reid A. Bryson and other climatologists,
Donald Oilman, chief of the National Weather Service's long-range-prediction group,
University of Toronto Climatologist Kenneth Hare, a former president of the Royal Meteorological Society).
"when meteorologists take an average of temperatures around the globe they find that the atmosphere has been growing gradually cooler for the past three decades. The trend shows no indication of reversing. Climatological Cassandras are becoming increasingly apprehensive, for the weather aberrations they are studying may be the harbinger of another ice age. Telltale signs are everywhere -from the unexpected persistence and thickness of pack ice in the waters around Iceland to the southward migration of a warmth-loving creature like the armadillo from the Midwest.Since the 1940s the mean global temperature has dropped about 2.7° F...............................
When Climatologist George J. Kukla of Columbia University's Lamont-Doherty Geological Observatory and his wife Helena analyzed satellite weather data for the Northern Hemisphere, they found that the area of the ice and snow cover had suddenly increased by 12% in 1971 and the increase has persisted ever since. Areas of Baffin Island in the Canadian Arctic, for example, were once totally free of any snow in summer; now they are covered year round........................
Man, too, may be somewhat responsible for the cooling trend. The University of Wisconsin's Reid A. Bryson and other climatologists suggest that dust and other particles released into the atmosphere as a result of farming and fuel burning may be blocking more and more sunlight from reaching and heating the surface of the earth..............................
Whatever the cause of the cooling trend, its effects could be extremely serious, if not catastrophic. Scientists figure that only a 1% decrease in the amount of sunlight hitting the earth's surface could tip the climatic balance, and cool the planet enough to send it sliding down the road to another ice age within only a few hundred years."
I'm 71 and remember it being in the papers and on the TV, and, as usual, the climate scientists needed massive grants in order to study it all and save the planet. My Grandad remembered that in 1922 the story being carried (and this was confirmed by Snopes fact checking) said " The Arctic ocean is warming up, icebergs are growing scarcer and in some places the seals are finding the water too hot, according to a report to the Commerce Department yesterday from Consulafft, at Bergen, Norway.
Reports from fishermen, seal hunters and explorers all point to a radical change in climate conditions and hitherto unheard-of temperatures in the Arctic zone. Exploration expeditions report that scarcely any ice has been met as far north as 81 degrees 29 minutes. Soundings to a depth of 3,100 meters showed the gulf stream still very warm. Great masses of ice have been replaced by moraines of earth and stones, the report continued, while at many points well known glaciers have entirely disappeared.
Very few seals and no white fish are found in the eastern Arctic, while vast shoals of herring and smelts which have never before ventured so far north, are being encountered in the old seal fishing grounds."
So, a hundred years ago they wanted loads of money to investigate global warming, 50 years later they wanted loads of money to investigate global cooling, 50 years later (now) they want loads of money to investigate global warming again, so I'm guessing that in 50 years time they will want loads of money to investigate global cooling again.

"The UK will experience hotter, drier summers, and warmer wetter winters."
They were right about winters, but TOTALLY wrong about summers. Summers have NOT been drier, and there has been no increase in summer temps in 60 years - according to their own stats. The lies cannot continue for much longer. The truth always outs. By 2035 the world will be cooler than it is today (average temp).

I am currently on my annual holiday down on the South Coast at a resort I have visited often since the late nineteen seventies. Usually the weather has been good when I visit in summer but at the moment it’s been very changeable with sunny days and wet days and some in between or a bit of both. But we all commented that we had once had a similar experience at the same resort back in the nineteen eighties. So in summary the weather and climate isn’t much different in the South of England than it was forty years ago.
One thing that has definitely changed over the last forty years though is the increased population in the country and the extra housing that has been built all over Green fields or Green belt land (or even grey belt as the Labour Party would have it). It’s increasing population (immigration) which is really impacting the country we live in far more quickly and effectively than any change to climate or weather patterns.

And if the forest was no longer there after a fire it would give them a far greater chance of obtaining said permission. Arsonists were responsible for the fires that raged there about three years ago. The fire nearly caught on to my stepsons home coming within ten metres of it, causing their trees to catch alight. When it became apparent that the ice age wouldn't arrive, the "experts" then predicted that children wouldn't know what snow was by the year 2000 due to anthropogenic global warming. 2000 happened to be the year that there was unprecedented worldwide snowfall even in Egypt. There are just too many variables such as solar activity, volcanic eruptions and Milankovitch Cycles for anyone, expert or not, to make accurate long term climate predictions.

The warnings were such that when we moved house I made sure it was both sheltered and on higher ground. In the years since then I have monitored the weather and the claims made by the BBC quite closely and all though the weather has generally become milder in the winter nothing really bad has happened. @alp8409 Před 14 dny +1

A lot of the autumn and spring sown cereal crops failed to germinate or died due to waterlogged ground. The crops that have grown will be stunted by the cool wet weather. If August is a washout there won’t be any crops worthwhile to harvest. £3 a loaf is going to be an underestimation

It’s a fact that farmers globally are being attacked by their governments and assailed by the elements. It’s either been too wet and cold or too hot and dry or some places like India have gone from drought to floods. There is going to be a global food shortage. Food and the price of power and fuel will soar. It could be so bad that you will not be able to buy bread. Get a hand grinder and wheat berries/grain as this will last longer than flour. Get some flour and yeast and learn how to make bread. Remember the government warning to have 3 days worth of essential supplies and the emergency alarm sent to mobile phones. This is going to plan.

The MET Office paint the pictures of the Earth orange and red, gas-lighting us into thinking it is burning. But if you look at actual photos of the Earth from satellites, it is actually greening, and the green areas spreading into what was once deserts. The extra CO2 is doing its job as plant food.

Well let me put it this way. Nothing grows either under ice or without CO2. Therefore, we need heat, water and CO2 to promote growth in fertile land. It appears we have more than enough water, we’re told temperatures are rising and therefore far less chance of ice, plus apparently CO2 is increasing slightly, although it is and always has been a trace gas and is currently around 0.042% of overall atmospheric gas.
