Maria is brilliant, she is on another level when compared to most other comedians... her stream of conscious honest dialogue strips life bare and then creates insight with huge laughs. I am constantly in awe of her comedy.
Maria is not only one of the best comedic minds of our generation but a truly brave and inspirational person. This audience is very un empathetic (and humour less it seems) but she struggles on and that is ever more admirable. She gets a lot of respect and love from me.
I once had to give a presentation immediately after lunch. Due to a miscommunication, the material I had prepared was on the correct topic but dramatically different in tone and depth from what was required and additionally it was all verbal instead of the multimedia presentation the host expected. I had the entire morning to consider this fact as I listened to the other presenters but no ability to create anything new, so I just sat next to my supervisor and silently panicked for five hours waiting for my turn. I was able to write a joke in my head which I opened with. "I hate coming on right after lunch. I feel like I should give everyone graham crackers and lay out some blue cots.” Something like that. Anyway, about 60-odd people and no one laughed. Dead air. So I followed up with, “Someone told me I should open with a joke. Maybe I’ll try that next time.” One. Single. Laugh. That was it, and I then proceeded to stumble through 20 minutes of the shakiest presentation I have ever given. I slunk back to my seat and had the pleasure of sitting next to my irritated supervisor for the remaining 3 hours. Now whenever I watch something like this I feel every silence in my heart. ouch.
I worship this woman and her comedy, so it saddens me so much to hear her story. I really hope she stays as well as she possibly can, because her light is pure and true.
Watching her hand trembling the whole time made me feel so tender. Just how hard she works and pushes through difficultly. Love Maria so much, deeply inspired and so genius. As someone who also struggles with my mental illness, she’s been such a shining example of how to be genuine and supportive to others through just sharing.
I discovered Maria on Netflix back in 2016. Her comedy is pure gold. She never talks down to or explains her jokes to the audience. I love it. I also love her honesty about her struggles with mental health. I do hope she does mental health comedy clinics. That's such a great idea.
Love you Maria, you truly an inspirational speaker. Funny and truthful. You have no idea the impact you’ve had on me; helping me to see the funny in the terrible situations in my life. Keep it going girl!
Anybody who's calling gives others more room for their own humanity just by speaking and being themselves is a rock star in my book. Maria Bamford is a rock star.
When she talks about not understanding how to go to work on time and be there the entire time is so relatable. I was having panic attacks every morning and then was resentful about it while at work. Her stand up brings me so much laughter and peace.
I have anxiety and her hands shaking, I can totally relate to. My friends and coworkers always point it out and I never notice it. It’s embarrassing but I just live through it. Love her comedy and bravery ♥️
I'm just in awe of her talent and courage. The way she not only owns crushing experiences that would destroy other people, but incorporates them into her act is incredible. Her vocal range is amazing too. Along with Tim & Eric, John C Reilly, Will Forte, and others, she has deconstructed and rebuilt comedy
Sorry I didn't make it on time I am on seraquill... Can't do it.......I'm not gonna do standup just because comedy doesn't go well with everyone... So if my story isn't of any interest there's plenty of courtyard..... This is just genius lol this girl needs another Netflix special ASAP
A brand new special came out a few days ago, not Netflix though, but you’ll find it on iTunes and others, it’s called “Weakness is the brand” and it’s brilliantly funny
I had a nervous breakdown after mum died when I was 17, a month in psych hospital ra ra- it wasn’t a progressive condition but it meant that the mental illness crew are my people and GOOD medical crew mean SO much. I thrive on comedians and this vid was so beautiful to me.... ::)
As a therapist and someone who has had (and still has) some mental health challenges, Maria's story is so amazing to hear, yet deeply sad because of how she's suffered over the years. And yet, there is hope. Hope in her ability to share her story. Hope in her perseverance to keep going in spite of her struggles. Hope in her desire to help others and encourage them to get help in any way possible. Hope in the way she builds her comedy routines around things that aren't always very funny on the surface. Hope in that she has found help herself as well as medication that works for her. Like Maria, I am an atheist, and the one spirit I believe in is the human spirit. Keep going, Maria!! You are loved and appreciated more than you'll ever know!!
My favorite comedian and one of the most incredible human beings on the planet. Her humor and message are groundbreaking. Maria - you are legend. You’ve helped so many people in so many ways.
Wow the funniest female comedian I have ever heard, I had no Idea....and even the way she struggles while telling this story is wild. Maria you are so brave wow blows my mind....
The joke about the friend’s funeral was soooo fckin savage and good! Such exquisite layers! I can’t believe she even SAID it to this audience...I’m super impressed she can be funny on those meds.
I am just so glad that she is feeling better. Maria is one of the kindest people I know. She is a personal hero of mine. Besides, she is a comedic genius.
Thank you for sharing your story. You are a gift to this universe. You are magnificent, and your mind is complex and incredible. I will never tire of listening to anything you have to say!🙌
Maria is absolutely wonderful! She helped me through a lot of my med transitions. I now understand the tremors and cognitive issues I have. Oh the stuttering sucks. She's real and in this world, we need the love and laughter. Love you BamBam!
I love seeing all the other commenters here appreciate Maria. Been watching too much comedy/stand up since before the two comedy channels combined. She s like a female Robin Williams. She’s brilliant. Nice to see that others know it too.
I absolutely love this woman! Maria is an absolute genius! What a trooper.....and such kindness and consideration as she bares her soul to help others! An absolute treasure! A kind heart...sharp mind...and tenacity and physical beauty on top. What a combo! Thank God she had SAC and the strength to seek help otherwise the system in the USA would have her bankrupt homeless or dead. Bernie 2020!
yes, but at least someone had the sense to bring a little comedy into their presence - I mean the American lawyer hears someone laugh and starts considering how it could be written into a class action suit right?
I hope she knows we love her. Her voices are epic. Since I was little I was obsessed with comedy, accents, ect. Her Christmas special? Jasus Mary and Jo 😂 So fucking good lol. Watched it when it first came out years ago. I’m 35 now and passing on her comedy to my nephews (6 nephews and not one niece? ! I guess everything happens for a reason equally amazing nephews. They definitely respect women in comedy. Half Korea - Half Irish jokers who are growing up with good comedy from every angle. Amy Sedaris and Maria are my favs. I get Maria. I how it is when you’re not feeling great. Been there. Comedy truly heals.
I love your voice Maria. Love. I just discovered you and wow~you are brilliant and very funny. Thank you for speaking on your experience...thank you. Massive amounts of love to you and if you tour, I will make a major point to see your show-you are highly talented and I want to support your craft! Brilliant.
Maria is amazing! Brilliant, courageous, determined. Thank you for posting her speech about these incredible experiences and how she makes life work & sets boundaries for self care.
How in God’s name can you string together a speech while on Seroquel? I just want to lie down in a dark room and sleep for a long, long, LONG time. I just don’t know how you do it Maria.
By the end I just wanted to cry as you could tell by the dystonia in her jaw that she was struggling. She almost has borderline tardive dyskinesia. I hope her physician or psychiatrist will see this video and ameliorate these horrible contraindications.
Maria Bamford is unique in her talents and while her comedy is often borne of pain, she is one of the best Comedians out there. Her mind works at high speed and at great depth. I often marvel at her ability to capsulize characteristics of the people she speaks of.
Despite all her hurdles, her ability to talk truth about what she experiences is powerful enough to get her a stronghold of control. Also, her ability to make it funny is funny.
I love you Maria! Thanks so much for sharing your experiences! Thank you for using your fame to spread awareness to mental illness. Can't wait to see your stand-up live!
She shows us what it is truly to struggle with a Mental Disorder. The Highs, The extreme Lows, the dull mind numbing and crushing "Living within your own head" and yet keep pushing on. I have GAD and Panic Disorder which is not fun. 64 ambulance rides in 2yrs because I thought I was dying. The cycle comes with in and outs of OCD and manic with agoraphobia. It is a living hell but with friends and learning and Cognitive Behavior Therapy it helps but the struggles with Alcoholism. She is right in saying we are very smart and have success and can be the smartest person that can endure alot of stress that others cannot. I am a software project manager that has had great years and aweful years. Bankruptcy too not wanting out of bed to dreams that seem better then your waking life. I still go through this at the age of 52 and haven't worked since Covid Pandemic and now ready to go back but explaining all the time off in a business world is a terrible experience. I have my masters and also at one point lived out of my car or peoples couches. I salute her in her struggle and endeavors as it is a live time journey with mental illnesses. Thank you all that want to learn about, understand, accept us and give us a chance to work again.
I feel everything you said and it touched me like nothing else has. It am so grateful to have seen this and If there is a way to be in touch or see you live.......I live in Ventura. I need to know when and where you are performing and my hands are shaking right now as I'm typing this.
I just love her courage so much. Her use of voices would seem inspired to some degree by Jonathan Winters and Robin Williams, and yet it goes so much deeper into observational humor, human frailty, and I guess deeper character development. The tremor in herb hands may be hard for me to see because, I don’t know…maybe because we all get old, and we’re about the same age. But I digress. Love to you Maria ❤
She tries her best to hide her pain, but you can see it.
I wish she knew how much of a treasure she is.
She knows we love her.
Maria is brilliant, she is on another level when compared to most other comedians... her stream of conscious honest dialogue strips life bare and then creates insight with huge laughs. I am constantly in awe of her comedy.
Stephen, you have articulated succinctly my thoughts on Maria Bamford.
Maria is not only one of the best comedic minds of our generation but a truly brave and inspirational person. This audience is very un empathetic (and humour less it seems) but she struggles on and that is ever more admirable. She gets a lot of respect and love from me.
The audience was super receptive, just not recorded on audio. Maria is brilliant here - all of it off the top of her head and honesty
well, it's a lunch. And the mic is not picking up the laughter. It's a luncheon mic, not a stand-up performance type mic maybe.

We love you Maria - just keep doing what you're doing. You are the best. Tough crowd you had to work with there.
Yeah, these kinds of places are always tough.

As someone who also struggles with my mental illness, she’s been such a shining example of how to be genuine and supportive to others through just sharing.
She says around 13:50 that the tremor is a side effect of her psychotropic meds.

Much of the audience was humorless, and it's frightening.
Anybody who's calling gives others more room for their own humanity just by speaking and being themselves is a rock star in my book. Maria Bamford is a rock star.
Her standups helped me make peace with depression and stop judging the hell out of myself ❤️
Her hands are not shaking due to anxiety.
She has a tremor due to her medications.
I hate to see her suffer. Always loved her comedy and I can't believe what she was going through while she was doing brilliant things.
She is heroic.
This comedian has stopped me in my tracks. She is so funny. I really appreciate her!
Her brilliance shines because she's been stripped of pretense.
Well said
