    As a former ad guy, I actually worked on the launch of the XJ (Cherokee) in 1983-84. What a great car. Paid about $10K for a new one under the supplier plan discount. Bought a new Wrangler in 1989 for $13K. Both of these were simple base models with manual transmissions and steel wheels.Yes, Jeep has priced themselves beyond what the brand deserves, particularly given that its plagued by build quality and reliability issues. Jeep has also watered down its DNA with models like the current Renegade, Cherokee and Compass and over-extended themselves with the ridiculous (and ugly) Grand Wagoneer. Back in the early 80"s, I remember the lament about "bean counters" and how they negatively impact the design of a new car. Looks like its gotten only worse.

      I feel like recent model year Wranglers are still reliable if you don't add lift kits, aftermarket accessories, et al. I have a 2017 Wrangler Sahara as my daily driver - 67k miles, and aside from things you'd expect to wear out at the 5 year/60k mile mark (e.g. tires, brake pads, battery), it's been as reliable as any other vehicle I've owned. Price wise, Jeep has been too expensive for a while - have enjoyed mine, but could only justify the purchase by getting a new, prior year model at a $6-7k discount vs. what the 2018s were selling for at the time. An upgrade would be nice, but the equivalent Wrangler to mine now is over $50k at much higher interest rates. Doesn't make sense.

      @ChiTownTx Před rokem +5

      Hah, the days of the unkillable XJ are long over. I worked in parts at a Jeep Dealership back in the early 2000's. Even back then we were starting to comment on how the reliabilty of Jeep was going down yet the price continued to go up. The Cherokee swapped out it's amazing trans for a much cheaper version back then and the overall quality of parts used started to take a huge nose dive. Mopar on a whole seemed to be finding new ways to make parts that cost them less money. Rams were commonly having a cycliner that wouldn't fire along with rust issues. Grand Cherokees we considered not worth buying at all (at that time) due to the many issues they had. Kinda funny but back then the Liberty was the most reliable model. Who knows what it looks like now but anyone I know that currently owns a Jeep isn't very happy with it. Especially for the insane prices they are trying to charge.

      After the mid 1990s, Jeep went down the toilet. IF you bought a Jeep of any kind before 1993, you got a decent car. My old Cherokee Ltd. lasted almost 12 years without any issues. The only reason I sold it was the age. It had turned into a ticking time bomb: every time something went wrong, I got the same response from the Mopar mechanics: "Dang, how old is this thing? We're lucky we still have the part!" I ran into a new issue: the engine was outlasting EVERYTHING supporting it. Had to rip out and replace the battery and cooling system. The mechanic said the same thing: "It's too old! I'm amazed it lasted that long!" When I sold my Jeep, it was still running: the power windows still worked, the door locks were fine (nothing a squirt of WD40 couldn't fix!). It still had the original engine and transmission. But looking under the hood, I realized it was time to let go of my precious Jeep. There were so many new components under the hood that I knew I was on borrowed time.

Back in 2015, I got a new Wrangler JKU Sport S for $31K, now Sport and Willys models are creeping up darn near $50K (depending on selected options), which used to be where the Rubicon would be. They have significantly increased the prices of the option packages-the cold weather group (remote start, heated seats & steering wheel) used to be $895, that package now is over $1,000 and for what? It is the same exact package! A 2023 Willys JLU is almost $5K more, with the exact same options, as my 2021 Willys. They really need to come back to reality with their pricing. I wonder how much of Jeep's sales have eroded due to the evolution of the "overlanding" fad? We've seen Ford and GM come out in recent years with lots more in the way of off-road capable packages of 1/2 ton and mid-size trucks (Ranger Tremor, Ranger Raptor, F150 Tremor, AT4 and AT4X, Trailboss, and the new Chev/GMC mid-size trucks are all about off-road, at very least in styling). Not to mention Ford going very hard at Jeep with the new Bronco lineup. So where Jeep was undisputedly the domestic brand that had its focus on off-road capabilities, now that other domestic automakers are moving into that space, Jeep's shortcomings (price, reliability, value) are under a bigger microscope and can't hold up against the new alternatives.

    • @DB-bw5fz
      @DB-bw5fz Před rokem +1

      I think the difference there is that trucks like the Raptor, AT4 sierras etc…are simply new packages of existing vehicles that already sell well. If you look at the Bronco, regardless of what you think about it…it generally captures the aura of the original Broncos fairly well. The Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer, and even the Cherokee don’t seem to do that in the same manner. The original Grand Wagoneer was a capable off roader, but was made more upscale by getting leather seats, nicer interior materials and maybe some additional options. The new Grand Wagoneer seems to be trying to cash in on the legacy of the name, while being built to compete more with vehicles like the Escalade. Might not be a bad vehicle for the segment…but it doesn’t quite fit it’s nameplate.
      Similar to how the Mach-E gets blasted for the fact that it wears the Mustang name. I’m not a Ford guy…and I kind of like the Mach-E….but it shouldn’t be a Mustang.

It’s just more dealing with the dealership service center which is a pain when there’s small issues but currently I’m waiting for Toyota to bring back the Land Cruiser or the redesigned 4Runner if I do trade it in one day.

    I agree the Jeep image is completely different then when I was growing up. My family has had many Jeeps over the years and they all lasted forever. My parents still have a 2008 Grand Cherokee with tons of miles and they drive it all the time with very little issues. Like you said Jeep always was a brand that seem to be built for ruggedness and appeared to be tough. Now they have the image of a prissy Range Rover. Except for the wrangler and the gladiator all the other models just seems to appear to look like the rest of the vehicles on the market. There’s no toughness appeal to them like you would expect out of the Jeep brand of the past. I like the Gladiator for the most part but I think they definitely missed the mark. The base model looks very weird with the small wheels and the long body which is a big turn off as I hear people all the time say they hate the look of it. I think they should not have made the gladiator look like the the wrangler but more like a traditional truck that was more rugged looking like the gladiators of old. Most people looking for a midsize truck I feel do not care to remove the roof. And if they would remove the 4 door only option and have a two door long bed then that would help out the gladiator. If they did that I would definitely be in the market for one. I have plenty of vehicles to haul people but would like to have a single cab long bed midsize for hauling items and not people. One other thing Jeep needs to do is change their option package for the Wrangler. The Wrangler is known for its outstanding toughness with bear minimum options. I feel you should be able to option a basic Wrangler with all the beefed up drive train and suspension components without getting all the luxury items. My wife has a rubicon and it perfect for her since it has the luxury items for everyday use and we still off road with it. But for me I could careless about those items for my vehicle but would love to have a base Jeep options with rubicon drive train. I drive a 95 wrangler now as my daily and love the basics of it but the drive train is weak. If Jeep sold a base Jeep with rubicon drive train I think it would sell very well but I know they make a huge profits by making people buy the upscale rubicon model. They could easily appease more people by offering both more rugged looking lower end models and a more luxury looking higher end of each model. This is just my opinions though.

Both vehicles are stripped down for the summer and leather isn't going to fare well under bright sunlight all day long. I paid the extra to make sure both vehicles were equipped with all of the off road goodies and electronics, stereo, etc but other than color that was it. I wasn't even fussy about engine choices. I'm still happy with my choice although I am definitely going to be looking for the next gen of Gladiator. I think there are going to be some big surprises.

    I do think Jeep should put itself in the premium brand category similarly to Mazda. Not quite luxury, but not an economy brand. That said, even economy cars of today have more luxury than many luxury car brands had in the mid 2000s. Now between more competition and their inflated prices they are feeling the downturn. They also have the same old boring powertrains in which need to be updated but have gone woke electric. Where is the twin turbo in-line 6? It should be available in the Grand Cherokee, Wrangler and Gladiator months ago! The pentastar while overall reliable is a very boring torqueless engine to drive and not a premium driving experience to go with their premium prices. I have one that I bought in 2021(WKII version) with the well sorted Pentastar V6 and proven ZF designed 8 speed transmission. I am confident in it's reliability with that powertrain. However the new one is now only offered in 4XE. Why not offer it with a lower cost, simpler (maybe higher reliability) ICE engine? This trim starts in the low 60s and is easily $65-67k with a couple of option packages. I bought my '21 new for $42.7k (had some generous discounts to lower the 49k MSRP, though). Yes, the new one is nicer and even slightly more capable but I still believe you shouldn't be forced to pay such a steep price - especially the cost increase due to being forced into the 4XE.
