I've turned down about $35,000 of vehicle extended warranties over the years. My unanticipated out-of-pocket repairs during that time...about $400.

Good info 👍. I’m glad I didn’t buy the extended warranty in 2012 when I bought my car. It was a few thousand dollars, don’t remember the exact amount. In the 7 years I’ve had my car, it has only gone in for recalls & a horn issue that was covered by the manufacturer’s warranty.

Whoo I like these videos..lol..ok, my take on warranties, my only experience is the 4 new vehicles purchased threw out the years, all Rams btw starting from 1999. I won't say don't get the warranty, I never have, and have never regretted it, but I take extremely good care of my vehicles. All I'll say is this, when I purchased my 2019 back in July I was given 4 different warranty choices. It was all labeled and put Infront of me, it was for different "care packages" as they call it..yayablah blah..it had prices for each package and what it covered. I won't go into it all here unless asked, but I was inquzitive to the tire package and explained to him why it was sorta worthless, the next package was for some nano ceramic coating, btw yes ceramic coatings work, but not from the dealer, go to a professional detailer who's cheaper and will do a better job, the kid in the back of the dealership who might make $13hr probably won't give to $hit on how it's applied..all I'll say is even new car paint needs to be prepped from sitting on the lot..it's a time consuming process. Needless to say at the end of the forth quote on the paper I had asked where he came up with these numbers, he said it was based on my driving habits and a few other things, so I then said ..oo..then your numbers are different for every consumer? He said yes, I then said-well that means your quotes are based on a sliding scale and they are very much negotiable, meaning you don't have to pay what the salesmen quotes you, just like the vehicle purchase, the warranty price is negotiable also..how I know..I got a letter 2 weeks ago from the dealer, saying."we noticed you didn't purchase a extended warranty" please call us to set up a plan before such and such miles...long story short, I declined the warranty, and now there wanting to still sell me one..and I bet ya , it's lower then the one I would have had to finance ontop of the new vehicle price..nah I'm good. Not only that, your paying for double coverage, the warranty ((((should))) in all fairness start at the end of the bumper to bumper warranty, it doesn't, it starts when you take delivery, so your new wang bang warranty they are charging you for is overlapping the initial warranty...if your planning on keeping the vehicle forever, then ya ok maybe purchase the warranty, esp if you beat the crap out of it and drive it hard. However if your plans are to trade it in at some point, save your $$$, it's a crap shoot, you nor the dealer know who will make out on it..your purchasing a peace of mind, that's pretty much it..I will say, in the defense of this video, I have a friend who purchased another companies SUV new, and he did purchase the warranty, he ended up using the warranty to cover problems with the power seats, fuel pump, and hvac issues, along with issues with carbon build up in the engine, so, did he get his money's worth..ya probably, he ended up trading it in before things got to bad right around the 70,000 mile mark..good advice in this video, but ask questions, and negotiate that price, they want to sell you something, and selling something is better then you waking away completely saying not interested, I have the letter here to prove they still want to sell me a warranty, for the hell of it, I'm curious as to what the new quoted price would be..after all, it's certainly worth something, I'm not saying there not..but what I think it's worth and what they think its worth are 2 different numbers..I also had a slight advantage of asking a mechanic that works there(friend) what are these Rams coming back for? And yes they do have some flaws, but none of what he said my truck had..do your homework, not saying to rip the paper up if your presented with it, but ask questions. And as far as them saying it will cost you more if you don't purchase it today? Not true..sorry for the rant, but certain topics definitely catch my interest..😺

My rule of thumb on extended warranties. If you want one. Buy the manufactures warranty, stay away from aftermarket offerings and never buy one from someone who cold calls you on the phone.
Ben's right-on about the 5yr/100,000 mile powertrain warranties only covering things that oil touches. These are good for the engine long block & heads, transmissions etc. but don't cover any of the bolt-on components or electronic control units which can be thousand's of dollars to buy & have replaced. These are the components that can make an extended warranty well worth the money, just make sure the warranty does cover these items & keep in mind that the extended warranties can be negotiated for pricing.

If you buy a used car without knowing the history or getting "the story" (when buying from a private party), a short extended warranty is a good idea. This, and markups of 30-45% on used cars are the reason why the perceived savings thereon are mostly a myth.

Yup! I don’t know if they offer it anymore but I bought it from Jeep when we got my wife’s Jeep Grand Cherokee. According to our service advisor we’ve had over
$ 50,000 in repairs on that vehicle. We’ve had a lot of problems with it. It’s bumper to bumper everything is included.

I think it depends on the vehicle manufacturer. I didn’t buy one with my tundra and have over 100k on it and not one problem. If I would buy from the big 3 I definitely would buy a warranty.

When a dealer tries to sell me an extended warranty on a new car, I ask them if I should buy the car, if it needs the extended warranty. They are not exactly instilling confidence in my new purchase.

    • @lexilogsdon1699
      @lexilogsdon1699 Před 7 měsíci

Let me start by saying that I'm sure you do your research on the vehicles you are interested in before deciding which one you want to buy.
Watching videos, reading reviews, all the jazz. I imagine you sit down, crunch numbers, map out finances, and discuss the idea with friends and/or family before you reach out to the dealership that has the one vehicle you truly have your heart set on. From that point, you have invested all the time and effort it takes to walk through the door and proceed with your HUGE purchase.
This is because YOU gave yourself the confidence to do so.
YOU decided to purchase your new car based off of what information you gathered long before ever getting to the dealership. It wasn't after the show your salesperson put on keeping you excited and saying how great everything is about your new car or by preaching about ALL the features and benefits. So, why would you be deterred by someone offering you a longer period of coverage than what you are guaranteed to get?
With my knowledge, Service Contracts (extended warranties) are offered on ALL vehicles, new or used. Personally, I don't view it so much as "they are not instilling confidence in your new purchase", but that they are maintaining a level of compliance and offering you an option to protect your investment. Similar to getting insurance on your cell phone or even medical insurance.
When given the option to extend your coverage, take into account what the manufacturer's warranty is. Ask yourself how long you plan on keeping the vehicle; how many miles a year will you be driving; what you will be using the vehicle for and under what conditions?
If you don't keep vehicles past the manufacturer's warranty then YOU DO NOT NEED a service contract, but if you plan on keeping your vehicle after the fact, I would recommend considering the idea.
From my experience, you are going to get better coverage options (and pricing) with a service contract when purchasing a new vehicle, as there are many factors (Year, Make, Model, Mileage, etc.) that come into play when a REPUTABLE warranty company offers to provide coverage for a used vehicle. Now this, of course, all depends on the dealership you are purchasing from and the warranty company providing the coverage, as Ben said.
Ultimately, ask as many questions as you can think of. Get as much information as you can on the coverages they offer. If you are still unsure, do your research before purchasing the coverage rather than straight up denying the option because you feel like they are not reassuring you.
We ALL hope when we buy something brand new and shiny nothing is or will ever go wrong with it. We can say we do/are going to take great care of the things we spend our hard-earned money on, but at the end of the day all vehicles are made by humans; humans make mistakes. As I said before, a service contract is no different than getting medical or phone insurance. We hope not to get sick or injured. We hope the case and screen protector on our phone will prevent damage.
I can attest that life is unpredictable and things can and do break.
Service Contracts are not evil and the people who offer them to you (from a dealership) are just doing their jobs and offering peace of mind or solution to a probable outcome of long-term vehicle ownership.

I'm confused about something, and I hope you can answer my question even though you made this video 3 years ago. My question is, don't car manufacturers offer basic bumper to bumper warranties on their cars? If so, then why would a customer buy an additional bumper to bumper warranty from the dealership?

When my mom and dad bought their car in 2013 the dealership under handly went ahead got them warranty and charge their card without there permission luckily my mom was smart enough to ask them to refund the warranty cause she didn't agree to it. The manager of sales was pretty pissed off and whatever just goes to show you what dealers will do to up hold your sale of purchasing a vehicle. They even switched the car my mom wanted she wanted the equinox with awd but that salesperson and Manager went ahead and switch it to a fwd model. Wow some dealers are shady.
