I've always wanted to learn the backflip too but landing on my neck and imagining the worst-case scenario it may result in is scary AF.
I don't know you but you sound like a very intelligent person who values being able to move.
i did this when i was 14, i did it first time on the grass and actually hurt myself , 21 now and im not the same
I actually learned how to front flip before back flip, then when i tried on my trampoline, i screwed up and hurt my neck, nothing serious i was fine after an hour or so with ice amd ended up with the same mental block as matt since i was 13 and im 21, i can front flip in ground but cant backflip at all just the idea scare me

Yeah, almost anyone can give it all to learn something in 3 days. It is way harder to commit some minutes everyday to systematically master it.

Id like to commend Matt for getting past his own mind and keeping going but I also want to commend Ammar for telling Matt to not sit too long and let his nervous system kick in too much but to get right back up (since he obviously was not very hurt just scared). This is so important even though it doesn't feel like an important thing. I am sitting here actually clapping at my desk watching this. Much love from Canada.
It's really weird how many people in the comment section "broke" their neck or something similiar when learning a back flip. I've been flipping for a little bit more than a year now, and for everyone who wants to learn it I just want to say this:
Don't rush it immediately. First you need to get awareness of your body, in relation to being able to take control of your body in any situation possible, for example: worst case.. mid-air you find yourself realizing your jump wasn't high enough, or not rotated quickly enough. This awareness will help you to know early if you would'nt make the flip entirely, and more importantly will it allow for a readjustion so you don't injure yourself badly (not as much atleast).
The other thing is, really get to know the movement. Kind of play it in your head, reviewing each step you need to take at which time and picture it in your head. At the same time, even if it might sound stupid, feel your limbs moving with each step. This will make you more comfortable soon enough and you'll eventually even be less scared because you understand each step. You kind of studied this trick.
What I've learned after attempting swing back flips, front flips, even small corks (180° backflips in this case) is that this goes for almost every trick. You should always get these steps done if you want to ease it up for yourself. I've only had a very small injury in the entire 14 months I've trained and that was only for a few days because I messed up these steps on the trick.
I understand what issues there are, and yes it might seem more or less demanding (mentally and physically) for some, but in the end it's almost only about these 2 steps I'd say. The only other thing is the physical "fitness" you should maybe have. If you want it you can learn it. But take it step by step, later you'll need less and less time ofworking on body perception and you'll find yourself almost only having to understand the tricks themself.
I hope this helped atleast one single person, with even a tiny thing. If not, that's fine too. I just know how it can be in the beginning. Anyways, thanks for reading I guess
thankss man
Tought myself how to backflip when I was 16, did thousands of them, among other acrobatic/gymnastic tricks as well. The only way to get hurt on a backflip is to give into fear. If you don't commit, you will land on your head. So long as you use something that even resembles proper form, you will go all the way around and at worst you'll land on all fours which is no big deal.. Fear-lack of commitment is the number one reason people get hurt doing backflips. They really are a very easy movement. It's just unnatural. Once people overcome the mental battle, they realize that it was extremely easy all along..
I'm 32 now. I attempted one this past summer weighing 50lbs more than the last time I did one at 22 years old. I barely made it around and landed with my hands. Lol. I was lacking the physical strength, I didn't have the necessary physical ability to successfully land one at the time. But I still didn't get hurt, I simply committed to it despite knowing I may not land it.
That's the best way to ensure safety. Commit no matter what and you'll always be okay. Learning to backflip is an incredible practice in overcoming and understanding fear, as it's literally the only limitation for most..
I really have a mental barrier with doing a flip or just being upside down. Does anybody have any tips to help this? I'd like to be able to learn how to do a flip (front or back) and just have better body control. How do you work up to that and practice this?
@@coastalbeaches7181 Do you have Discord? I can try and help you over there. But in general either a friend/friends to spot or a trampoline are very nice options
@@RadBlaze naw, but thanks for the tips. My friend has a trampoline, but I'm usually to scared to try to do a flip on there since I don't have any practice with it.
Instead of going straight for hard ground practice it on grass and don't just do it once and move on practice until it feels natural and it's no longer difficult.

Same, I’m able to do one on a trampoline, but I don’t want to try off of a diving board or on land. I’m going to try and work on this over the summer with my cousin though :D
Me too, I can't even do a cartwheel it terrifies me. I'm going to a gymnastics class with my gf maybe next week though, so who knows?
the main thing is hight i guess. i can't do one right now but i go gymnastics and seen people prep for it by jumping up and landing on a high block with a mat on it and from there basically doing a backward roll. Just getting your hips high and rotating is good. its good if u can't face a backflip on the trampoline and you honestly can't get hurt from it

FACTS!!
I'm proud of Matt for trying to overcome this childhood fear. Some of these comments clearly show a lack of understanding about trauma/anxiety/fear, and a lack of empathy towards those that suffer from them. As someone who has severe PTSD, I can understand how paralyzing these fears can be, no matter how small they seem. These fears actually affect your daily life, make you doubt yourself or want to give up before you start.
Go Matt! Conquer your fears! I'm cheering you on!
I think this is the most I have connected to any of the videos. They all inspire me, but I felt like I saw myself in this one. The struggle with something small and brushing it off, but that avoidance giving the fear power. Facing it. Falling. Not wanting to try again. Going for it. Not achieving it the moment it was desired, but taking that time as reflection of growth rather than failure. Then, achieving it and feeling a growth of confidence. It’s so hard sometimes and I feel like the smaller things we fear can sometimes be the bigger ones, because they are the ones that can make us feel weak if we let them. I’m proud of you. Probably will not ever see this, and it may not mean much, but it inspired me... immensely. So I’m happy for you, and I thank you.

I applaud you Matt, the team of @yestheory and all their friends who stuck by him. I recently started watching your videos, and each time I learn something new that really resonated with me. Thank you for sharing

Matt: 'I'm thinking about it so much.."
Big mood
As a girl who broke her neck a dozen years ago, I would never attempt to do a backflip.
But I totally understand the mindset. I broke my neck because of getting bucked off a horse. In order not to develop this same mindset about horses, I forced myself to go back to my grandpa’s farm where I broke my neck that totally changed my life and brush one of the other horses than the one who threw me. About 10 years later, I actually got back on a horse and rode for like 3 hours through the countryside near Arches National Park. It made me recognize how much I really loved horses as a young girl and appreciate that for what it was.
I hope you'll keep on riding horses now :).
k
How are you now ? Does it still give pain ?
I had a spinal operation 20 years ago and as a result have acquired many mental blocks which I am working on to eradicate.
Best wishes.
This is the kind of comment I was looking for! All the other jokers are inappropriate now.
Matt need encouragement! He doesn't need to do it, but if he wants to we should all encourage him!
Going back to the actual place is an interesting point. Like reversing time, and getting yourself back to the point where you made that decision not doing this again. It made me wonder about my fears.
Sometimes you just gotta get back on the horse.. 😏
I'll see myself out now...
I appreciate all the genuine emotion shown here, in my opinion this is much more powerful that the end goal of doing a backflip. I think it's even better to see all the mistakes as I can connect with that. I get validation from seeing you guys make mistakes, struggle, and progress. I actually also have this same fear with on ground backflips and any kind of front flip and this inspires me to make it a goal to do this later! It also inspires me to put myself out there and try out some more socially challenging things and post them on youtube like you guys do! I love your message, I love your commitment and thank you so much for all these gifts of inspiration, empowerment and compassion, it means alot!
Hey yes theory crew so glad to see matt attempting to overcome a small fear like that. personally ive struggled with the same exact fear since I've had some bad spills as a kid. I've gotten better but still have yet to land a standing back also. For him to keep trying after those to hits is just inspiring since i would have called it a day there. Something that is really enjoyable and not dangerous at all is using lines on either side of you connected to a harness thay allows you to spin freely in mid air. Yes some people might say they are kid parks to help them learn standing backs without being able to hurt themselves but ive personally seen people from all age groups on these even old and it brings me joy and inspiration rather than just astonishment and slight jealousy to watch them overcome that fear or achieve that dream through repition in a controlled environment. Love you guys hope everything is going well and yall are staying safe, Love and peace. Is there a part 2 out yet cause I did go looking for it?
Why did they go straight from the spotted back flip into sand to hard concrete no spot? He should've gone to the grass next, I think. Either way, still very proud of him.

Listening to you talk about "overcoming every fear" in order to change the person you want to become really got me. It might sound small but today I voluntarily used an elevator for the first time in my life, alone. It took 5 years of therapy and a LOT of determination to get there. And I can put some of that down to the inspiration that you guys give me to overcome my phobias. I want to change the person I become because it might sound silly but thank you

I'm think it's very comforting giving us such an insight into your fear Matt, cause I do actually have the same fear and could just feel with you when you were falling and why you don't want to do it.
But I also just have to say that this video encouraged me to start trying it again, until I suceed. Most of the times when I started I would just tell myself I can't do it, and stop after the first 5-10 fails. But this video really motivated me.

To Yes Theory,
Long time fan here! This is really random but I love pretty much everything about your guys' merch! The designs are great, the colors don't fade much, the material seems to last and feels very comfortable to wear (ironic as "seek discomfort" is slapped on all of it haha). But as a tall person, anything with long sleeves (jackets, sweaters, joggers, etc.) tend to be too short for me, usually the torso length and the sleeve length fall short a couple of inches. Anyways, just wanted to say you guys could probably expand your market by allowing a tall option for merch and adding a couple inches to the length / sleeves. For me, I know It's definitely hard to find quality clothes like yours that fit too. Thanks for all you guys do!

Yo flips are extra hard. I understand completely. They are a mental game, they're a fight you vs you, and getting hurt doing flips ruins your self esteem, your self belive. Watch my first video, I only do basic flips but it took me years and years to actually be able to do them anywhere. Matt never did learn to backflip, there never was a part 2.. Instead Matt let his fear and discomfort win. Interesting that not long after this video he quit the channel..
Matt, we know you come back here to this video from time to time, since the backflip is something you ran from, we know it's eating you alive.. You shouldn't have allowed the fear to win, but there's still a chance. It's not too late. There's absolutely no reason why you can't backflip other than your own mind holding you back.. This is bigger than just a backflip. This is about you living your truth, this is about you and the battle against fear and evil...
Take back your power. Take back your agency. Get over your fear and learn how to backflip before it ruins you, Matt.. You can do it..
This is so inspiring! Thank you so much ❤️ I love your videos, amazing as always!! Also I’m really worried about Matt, are you okay?
When I saw that you were already on cement I knew you were going to get scratched or bruised up. I do “learn quick” videos on Instagram. As a fifth degree black belt in Kung fu and clinical psychologist, from my experience the backflip is actually something to be careful with and not hurry to achieve on cement. You could have tried it in the GYM, TALL GRASS, SAND NEAR THE SHORE, THEN something harder like CEMENT. Plus, you had already traumatic events in your past, so it is very easy to overthink or pullback from the backflip. Your body also needs to recover after training so much in only days. “ in 72 hours” always sounds great, but a potential trip to the hospital maybe isn’t so great. Nevertheless, keep fighting Matt. Learn to override your fear. Be talented, Be Great, BG. Cheers from SF - Johnnybgsf
Jonathan Fajardin hey man how can u do it by yourself safely
Yeah they rushed it way to fast, he wasnt ready for hard ground.
I couldn't agree more. He is there, but small careful steps are needed here.
Blue Animul That’s a good question. For those that don’t have a gymnasium or people to help spot you, the process is different and more challenging. So ideally you want go to the experts (gymnasts, cheerleaders, some martial artists), not only can they help but they could also show you what equipment they use. If you’re absolutely on your own, you’re going to need ALOOOT of tumbling Mats, cushions pillows, and anything that can make your landing soft. Be careful with mattresses. There’s another youtuber named Mike Boyd. He also tried the backflip like Yes theory. The problem was he also got hurt EVEN WHILE USING A MATTRESS ON A GRASSY AREA. It’s been over a year and he hasn’t made it yet. He said he never overcame the fear. So make sure you stay safe always. I preferred using sweats, a sweater and shoes while practicing to avoid scratching myself up and kind of have an “extra” thin layer over my body. When you got the “homemade equipment” it’s important to learn the technique and practice exercises for the backflip before actually just diving into it. Like Matt was able to do a lot of different exercises in the gymnasium before trying it, however if you’re on your own the truth is you’ll have less exercises in your power. Once you practice a lot of the exercises, watch a lot of tutorials, learn different exercises and techniques, you’ll eventually wanna try it. I highly recommend having someone (not a baby) that can spot you and help you get over when you try. Honestly it’s better to have someone strong enough to spot you and help you turn over if you don’t commit to it. If you’re on your own, to be honest it’s your own risk. What I can say is, like in skateboarding, you have to commit to it. If you’re trying by yourself and you’re doubting it, that might mean you need to practice more before trying . Take your time, it’s not easy. If you can buy an Air track on amazon (200-300 dollars) that can help. If you really want something, I’m sure you’ll do everything to get it done, and get it done safe. This inspired me to upload the learning process of the backflip on my Instagram: johnnybgsf. If you have any other questions you can DM me there. Stay safe. Be Great, BG
That's not cement. It might look like it but its that kinda sprongey plastic/rubber stuff that they have around some playgrounds
Adam: Don't think about it too much
Matt: *I'm thinking about it so much*
I got soooo excited whit that first backflip on the trampoline!!! I also got very emotional when you wanted to give up !!! I can’t wait for part 2 !!!!!! If it’s already out then I’ll comment on it, if not, I’ll be waiting !!! I believe in you !!!
Bro this man is a beast, if I’ve fallen that first time I would never try to do it again props to you, you for sure got bigger balls 🏈 hopefully that fail at the end stop you from trying to accomplish that backflip (I’m sitting her in quarantine waiting for part 2)
TD at the end killed me 😂😂
Great cliff hanger , Matt you’re a champ
He's acting or an idiot, maybe both.
Tried a backflip and broke my spine.
Life Discomfort.
You did it man! Despite the fall, you still stood! That's how you do it! Share love people
I know that feeling all too well. I am 18 years old, and have always been a "Music-boy" who has done sports, but never anything with flips! I started doing gymnastics 2 years ago, and I was terrified of everything, but mostly by being scared of what other people thought of me. I hated failing when there was an audience, and in the start, I was also very afraid of hurting myself.
It has become a lot better over the years, but in these corona times I quickly fall back into the thought patterns Matt is talking about, but now I can snap myself out of them! I really admire your tenacity with the backflip, and I know how hard it is to break that mental block, but I know you can do it!
There is a story about Houdini who wanted to prove that he could bust out of a prison cell in a few hours. After 1 hour his confidence started to fail, and after 2 hours he was bathed in sweat and collapsed on the door - which then opened. It was never locked! The moral of the story is, we don't know how many doors in our mind we think are locked, which really isn't. I believe this is one of those cases. I really hope you make a part 2 of this!
Thank you for the video Matt, not only did it realize the power of the human thought but also that even though i practice with people who are 5x times better than me, I might be alright at it as well ;)
Doctor: what brings you here today?
Me: *Haha just fix my neck please*
Ahhh you can’t leave it like that!! The cliffhanger!! Is he OK?! Did he go on the trip?
we need part two xd Matt needs to beat his fear thats all this chanel is about
Thanks for making this video. I landed on my neck really bad when I was trying to learn a front flip and it scared the crap out of me and I'm like Im never trying this again im done. I relate to this guy in this video so much with trying new tricks and hitting bigger jumps on my bike. This video really inspires me to not give into my fear.
