For this historic church, The Durable Slate Company took off the existing Pennsylvania black slate roof, which was near the end of its service life. The roof will be replaced with new North Country black slate which has a life expectancy of 100 years or more.
St. Mary's Catholic Church in Conshohocken, Pennsylvania is a historic landmark that has been serving the community for over 150 years. The church, located on the corner of Hector and Maple Streets, was founded in 1866 by a group of Irish immigrants seeking a place to worship in their new home.
The first St. Mary's Church was a small wooden building that was built by the community members themselves. It was blessed by the Bishop of Philadelphia, James Frederick Wood, on November 17, 1867. In the early years, the church struggled to stay afloat financially and relied on the generosity of the community to keep it going.
By the late 1800s, the church began to grow and prosper. A new, larger church was built on the same site as the original building in 1884. This new church was made of brick and featured a slate roof, which remains a distinctive feature of the church to this day. The new church also featured stained glass windows and intricate woodwork, which added to its beauty and elegance.
One of the most notable features of St. Mary's is its slate roof. The roof, which was installed when the church was built in 1884, has been well-maintained over the years and continues to be a beautiful and distinctive feature of the church. The slate tiles add a unique touch to the church's architecture and are a testament to the skill and craftsmanship of the original builders.
In addition to its slate roof, St. Mary's also boasts a number of other distinctive features. The church's stained glass windows, which were imported from Europe, are a stunning sight to behold. The intricate woodwork and carvings, which can be found throughout the church, are another unique aspect of St. Mary's.
St. Mary's has continued to serve the Conshohocken community with a variety of programs and services. The church offers weekly mass, religious education classes, and a variety of social and community events. St. Mary's is also home to a number of organizations, including the Knights of Columbus, the Rosary Altar Society, and the St. Vincent de Paul Society.
In closing, St. Mary's Catholic Church in Conshohocken, Pennsylvania is a beautiful and historic landmark that continues to serve the community to this day. The church's slate roof and other distinctive features make it a must-see destination for anyone interested in architecture or local history.
