When I was a kid back in the 1960's. A member of my church was a survivor of the Bataan Death March. As horrific as the conditions were. Our friend told us the event was significant. This was the first time in the history of Japan. That the Japanese took prisoners of war. Before that, everyone was slaughtered.
So surviving was a big thing! He walked with crutches. And never regained all the weight he lost. But I always saw him with a smile. Being a survivor really gave him joy!

Don't forget those loyal Philippino soldiers had to fight for their US veterans benefits. They were more than allies...they were defending their Homeland!
Which just happened to be US territory...

Funny that Americans call a literal colony "allies" to this day and see no problem with it but if Japan calls Korea an "ally" in WW2 it would somehow be cynical.
American double standard at its finest

@@Leo-hr7yqI don’t know much about this subject but didn’t the Philippine people largely support the us before and after Japan invaded? Granted it’s a case of “which is worse” but they wanted the us there and to fight with them compared to how Korea was subjugated by Japan unless I’m mistaken

On my father side, my great grandpa died from this Death March. He was born around 1905 - 1910, so he died around 33 - 38 years old. And he never got to see his daughter who was born in April of 1943.

My Father survived this. Almost never spoke about any of it except for three times. Once in passing when he saw my brother and me watching "Hogans Heroes" tv show. Once he laughingly told us about when he was captured a Japanese guard was picking at a blasting cap he found with a nail and blew his hand off. One time I was complaining how hard Summer football camp two-a-days were. I foolishly asked him how far he ever had to walk or run. He said about 70 miles. Still not realizing what he was talking about I asked "where were you going?" He said "to jail". I then realized what he was talking about and felt bad for asking. I always look for my Dad in these photos

The 20 million chinese civilians including infants and toddlers that were brutally sodomized to death with bamboo and bayonets, the school girls that were raped repeatedly and the children who were given anthrax laced candies.
