    "Is he going to wake up?"
    "The nurses pool says no."
    "How much is in it?"
    "30 bucks."
    "if they were sure, it would be at least a hundred."
    Every single version of the L&O cast was hilarious in its own way.

      Those Dodge Diplomats had some brute engine power.

    • @tmseh
      @tmseh Před 3 lety +12

      Most of the patrol cars in NYC and other tightly packed cities had small V8s or V6s. I think NYC had suitable pursuit vehicles for the West Side Highway and other highways around the city. Saving a few miles per gallon was a huge savings on their budget using smaller engines. There was really no need for a high powered cruiser on Manhattan streets due to traffic volume and conditions. The 90s Chevy Caprice 9C1 and Ford Crown Vics were valued for their durability and ease of repairs. The 94 to 96 Chevy Caprice were equipped with 4.3 V6s, a 4.8 V8 I believe and a 5.7 V8 based on the Corvette engine but it made 260 horses and good torque, about 340 lbs/ft.
      Fun gearhead fact~ the 94-96 Caprice with the 5.7 had the best, cheap modification good for about 15 more horses. The top of the air intake had a hole in the plastic that decreased the airflow which reduced power. The first mod gearheads do is insert a hockey puck into the hole which fits perfectly!

      @@johndrake2729 The Dodge Diplomats in NYC mostly used Slant Sixes for regular patrol cars early on, some had the 318/5.2 V8. They may have had pursuit/highway cruisers with the 360/5.9 V8s. That was probably the mid 70s to mid 80s. Late 60s I'm sure had those juicy 400 and 440 mills. NYC had huge budget problems in the 70s and 80s so they had to find ways to reduce gas consumption, especially on such a gigantic fleet for the police department alone. Those Chrysler Slant Sixes were bulletproof as far as durability though.

    • @tmseh
      @tmseh Před 3 lety +6

      One more thing, I promise.
      The gearing for those cars were perfect for the city. Quick off the line, so 4.11 gears would be my guess. Compared to a state police highway cruiser, those would have 3.08 maybe even lower allowing for a higher top speed, 140 mph plus.

    • @tmseh
      @tmseh Před 3 lety +3

      @@johndrake2729 Sorry about geeking out here. This pandemic sucks.
      The Dodge Diplomat/Monaco and Plymouth Fury/Polara were absolute beasts in the late 60s and early 70s used by State Police departments. The Michigan State Police has a very rigorous testing program for cruisers built by the big 3. Great videos of how they test them. The final word on best police cruiser came from the CHP which was a massive customer for Detroit. They deemed the 1970 Plymouth/Dodge cruisers with the 440 engine the best ever. Officers said those cars could run at 140 mph till it ran out of gas and could do it again the next day no problem.
