  • San Diego Offshore Bluefin Tuna | CRAZY BITE | Slow Pitch Jigging | Best Tuna Jig
    We booked this trip a year in advance with no expectations except hoping to drop a jig and learn about the Bluefin fishery out of San Diego California. In this video we walk you through one of premier tackle shops for the area (Fisherman’s Landing Tackle) We show the bluefin tuna catch from the day prior and then head offshore fishing. We brought only slow pitch jigging gear and a ton of JohnnyJigs slow pitch jigs only. The results were amazing. Each of us limited out on the first evening of the trip and couldn’t have been more pleased with not only our catches, but also how our jigging gear preformed. We squeezed our way up to the wheel house to chat Capt. Aliyar and get a idea of how he is targeting bluefin tuna. Finally we head out to Fisherman’s Processing to show how we got our Bluefin tuna back to South Florida.

    Different regions are so interesting. San Diego basically started hollow core loop to loop splices and topshotting mono on top of braid to facilitate stand up fishing with smaller tackle. So they were way ahead of the curve there, but arguably behind the curve on technical jigging like slow pitch.

    It helps to have a $30,000 Furuno searchlight sonar. Some people think they are great fishermen, but the reality is they have a great captain who brought them to the fish. If you put the same fisherman on his own boat, most would not be able to find the fish.

      @@taylorfallen4322 Not sure what you are talking about. Last I checked, most of those guys on cattle boats rely on the captain to take them to fish. Sure, there are private boaters, but I'm not talking about them. I go fishing almost every week in the West Coast in Southern California during the warmer season. I own two boats and I have many people I know who has their own boat. Yeah, I know nothing about west coast fishing.

    The Katy Perry Colt Sniper 100 gram is the BEST bluefin lure for slide fishing. Cast it out let it sink and rip it back! The soft swimbaits work for everything! Mostly used for rockfish and calico bass fishing but I have caught yellowail, tuna, grouper snapper, and dorado on them.

    Love the video! I have always wanted to see a traditional slow pitching on our BFT from your perspective. Like some already commented, please come back around June to August for our cow tuna jigging mayhem (Angrier and heavier BFT ranging from 100 to 300 LBS). Fisherman's Landing Tackle is a very traditional socal shop with focus more on those swimbaits for calico bass and surface iron for yeallowtail (amberjack). You should definitely try the traditional socal surface iron targeting yellowtail. I am sure everyone here is waiting for someone to document surface iron technique in other states like Florida. BTW, can't wait to try your jigs. Tight lines!

    Awesome to see you come out to the west coast, I've been using some of your slow pitch and micro jigs out here for a bit now! One thing I'll say though is having used slow pitch gear out here a bit, you are lucky not to have hooked into a monster on slow pitch gear at night. It is really easy to get way outclassed at night because even in a school of 40lb fish you might randomly hook up on a 100+ and that can get rough on slow pitch.

  • @zeauz
    @zeauz Před 2 lety +1

    in a reverse scenario where the large bluefin tuna bites the bottom hooks and takes a run away from you that top hook is gonna hook his pec fin. Then your point at which your pulling on the fish changes from the mouth to the middle of the body. it can be the difference of landing a 150+ pounder in 15m vs 2 hours because you can never turn his head. For the smaller fish it doesent really matter but for the larger grade fish at night most captains are advising you remove the top hook and use 2 assist hooks only on the bottom for this reason.

    Those plastics you are referring to are used for a variety of fish around structure and kelp. I’d have to say they are used the most for Calico Bass and maybe even Halibut although don’t be surprised if you see a Yellowtail or even White Sea bass bust on them.I use them around the islands, kelp beds and rock area’s especially around breaking surf zones. Calico bass fishing in SoCal is lots of fun on lite/medium gear too.
    Btw great content here.👍🏻 I recently went out on the Pacific Queen and Sea Adventure 80 for my first BFT trip 2023, it was also my first time jigging like this. I think back to 20 years ago how many times we missed opportunities on night bites for these BFT that we only fished with live bait or surface jigs.

    The plastic are mainly for Calico bass fishing. Also sand bass and spotted bay bass. But truthfully you can throw them at anything. I like all white ones for dorado on kelp paddies that are reluctant to bait. For some reason they’ll eat a white bait as you troll away from the kelp paddy. Drop back a purple and black on jig strikes used to produce pretty good too.

    I fish lighter line most of the time as well, but on the sport boats it just isn't as practical. Those were more schoolie sized bluefin, but when bigger models are in the mix that 40lb mainline isn't going to cut it. Not so much in the sense that you CAN'T land it, but more in the sense that it is going to take a lot longer and gives the fish more time to break you off or chew through your leader. Also you REALLY don't want to be the guy taking an hour to boat a 50lb fish while the school has moved on and everyone is sitting on the deck watching you.

    • @JohnnyJigsTV
      @JohnnyJigsTV  Před 2 lety +1

    I'm surprise people weren't rude to you guys. I run slow pitch rods setups too and gets all the jokes from bass rods to reels too small. Deck hands rolling their eyes when they see the slow pitch rod getting hooked lol hahaha. IMHO, the slow pitch setup is great for mid size game (20-40) here in west coast, its just you won't be able to enjoy slow pitching on an open party boat because people are rigging for sinker rigs and heavy flat falls, plus fly lines, if you slow pitch jigging, you will get tangle 100%. I found that white yoyo and heavy flat falls are best case for my setup , keeps my line infront of me avoiding the tangle from the fly lines, landed 150# on phenix 6'3'' w/ BV300. I used sinker rigs for my heavier rods. The lines needs to be heavy because other fisherman don't give a shit about your line, plus the bigger fishing will rub your braid under the boat as well when they do the circle of death, deck hands will use a fork to protect your line if they like you lol haha. I usually bust out the slow pitch jigging setup when everybody is tired and there only a fewer fishermen out but on a full deck, you will tangle everyone doing it thus gets a bad reputation from other fishermen and deck hands.

    What really differentiates the SoCal fishery is the access to live bait! When was the last time you were on a boat with bait tanks like that? Aliyar and the PS has been killing it this year! The slow pitch jigging thing is starting to catch on out here too. My last 3 day there was a father/son who only fished jigs and did as well as anyone.

      I’ve been ordering jigs and gear from y’all for the past few years and I happy to see you guys hang some of our bluefin on the jigs. Hopefully y’all will get to experience a wide open yellowtail bite on fast pitch jigs around the Coronados someday. 🤙🏾

    Those plastics are fished for anything that swims. But... mostly used in around and on top of kelp for calico bass.

    Soft lure “swimbaits” very versatile for inshore bass, yellowtail. I like using them for local spotted bay bass and calicos. Can also be fished on the slide when trolling. Ive seen many monster largemouth bass caught on rainbow trout patterns at local San Diego lakes too. Great video; nice to see the East Coast perspective [and traditional slow pitch techniques!]. Thanks, tight lines!
    PS Fishermans processing is great and grab breakfast at Perrys across the street while you wait for your fish……

    I really didn’t think I would see you guys land anything with those rod and line setups. Pretty cool to see the Florida gear coming to our side of the country. But ya we don’t fish light braided lines over here. We run heavy lines and then adapt our leaders to what we’re fishing. Even the 10-30lb yellowfin we still run 60lb braid but might only be running 15-25lb leaders. But all my bluefin gear is 80-100lb braid with top shot of 40-80. Good job tho fellas, if you ever want to come up to Oregon and try for lings and halibut. Feel free to get ahold of me.

      The Slow Pitch Jigging style is definitely growing here on the west coast, both for pelagics like bluefin tuna, yellowfin tuna, and yellowtail, but even more so for bottom fish species like rockfish and lingcod.
