Slow Pitch Jigging - Expert Tips with Reel Deal Tackle - Part 1 - Rod & Reel Setup

  • Slow Pitch Jigging, aka SPJ, is the latest craze in offshore saltwater fishing. At first glance, one look at a typical slow pitch rod and you would not think it was powerful enough to catch a 10 pound fish. However, avid SPJ anglers are tackling everything from snapper, grouper, yellowfin tuna, and swordfish on SPJ gear with great success.
    After accepting a recent invitation to join Mike Lipski and several other SPJ pro's for a deep jigging adventure to Pulley Ridge in the Tortugas, I thought it might be a good idea if I learned a think or two about SPJ and picked up a rod to get ready for the trip. Mike Lipski is owner of Reel Deal Tackle in Pompano Beach. Their shop is stocked with all of the right stuff for whatever type of fishing you want to do and they are the foremost experts in the world of SPJ with an entire section of the store devoted to the SPJ craft. If you're like me and just getting started, hopefully you find the information in this video very helpful when it comes to choosing the rod, reel, and gear you need to get started!

    Final update: this little reel is the little engine that could czcams.com/users/postUgkxSlytCJqozTF7EbdP4LWP-HUXf9WRDJ0e . It performed flawlessly and was easy to adjust drag in the moment while I was battling a 35lb bat ray behemoth. Mind you, this reel is spooled with only 25 lb braid and 25 mono topshot. It's paired with the kastking telescopic heavy power rod and the two work well together. This has now earned my respect and confidence when traveling and fishing. If you have ever hooked into large rays and sharks, you know they pull extremely hard and can run forever! This thing clamped down on the fish and was easy to adjust during the fight. It has a nice decently fast retrieve as well. Twice the fish went on mad runs and I was able to gain back line quickly to avoid spooling.

      I've got the Tokayo (Hearty Rise) SJ3 Power1 with an Accurate 500 narrow spool 2 speed, sweet combo. Have three of the Accurate 2 speeds, when you drop into low gear it reels so easy you'd think the fish got off. The Ocean Jigger (gray one with the slow fall lever) is a really nice reel also ( heavier than the Accurates), paired with a Poseidon custom rod is a pleasure to fish.

    In terms of the way you jig, is there a different way to jig when it comes to micro jigging or is the only difference the depth of water. I’m on the east coast, I’d like to try this with fluke and bass fishing from depths of 80-150 + feet.

    • @fishbluewater
      @fishbluewater  Před 2 lety

      I have not experimented with the micro jigs yet, however, the concept is the same so I would not expect the technique to change. I would recommend you reach out to the crew at Reel Deal Bait & Tackle in Pompano Beach. They will likely have some good insight for you.

      I slow off if nj 3 to. 4 times per week. Concepts hold. I use micro as well as jigs upto 280 grams. My go to us 112 and 135 most of the time. I pulled 3 striper less then 2 miles out over 35lbs on them just last week. Was dropping out at the rock pile in 180 to 230 caught so many black sea bass and blues i could barely reel anymore. No exaggeration if i lifted more than 3 times thought something was wrong.
