As we observe that the tone of the Philippine National Anthem was different from what we used to today, it is because the Philippine National Anthem before 1960s was written in English. It was changed in Tagalog in 1960s and set as an official anthem in 1998.

Mo nk - I hope you went to another country for education, not the Philippines, because if you did you must have been asleep while your teacher was teaching El Filibusterismo. Spanish was not a common language in the Philippines. Jose Rizal made that known for posterity in his novel El Filibusterismo. To quote “What will you do with Castilian, the few of you who will speak it” ---Jose Rizal.
The Americans killed the natives in the Philippines because those Americans were assholes but not because the natives were speaking in Spanish. They liked Spanish more than they liked the native languages; English and Spanish are both European languages. If not why would Manuel L Quezon have to lobby before the congress. To quote Manuel L Quezon:
“Fifteen per cent only can vote in the Philippines, because many good and well-qualified citizens have been deprived of this right by laws enacted by American officials.”
To be in the 15% one must meet any of the following qualifications
      Anybody may vote
who was an officeholder under the Spanish regime,
or who is able to speak or write either English or Spanish,
or who possesses property to the value of $250 gold,
or who pays taxes to the amount of $15 per annum.
I have asked the gentleman from Pennsylvania how many voters there would be in this country if the people of the United States were required to read and write German or any other foreign language. And I ask the same question again. Neither Spanish nor English are native languages in the Philippines

      He looks like Magsaysay.
In this presidential inauguration of the so-called 1949 "dirty election" where pres Quirino won, Maysaysay's political career was gaining momentum because he was helping to quell the rise of hukbalahap communism, not to mention also that he and Quirino are both members of Liberal Party at that time.
Magsaysay was the 'Chairman of the House National Defense Committee' during both 1946 and 1949 terms seat in the Philippine House of Representatives. In 1948, Pres Roxas (also Liberal Party) chose Magsaysay as Chairman of the Committee on Guerrilla Affairs to lobby a US Congress act giving benefits to Philippine veterans.
Pres Quirino eventually appointed Magsaysay as Defense Secretary until his resignation on Feb 28,1953. He resigned from Defense Secretary position because of several reasons:
      * met with interference and obstruction from the President and his advisers (in fear they might be unseated at the next presidential election).
      * To continue his fight against communism, and for a government for the people.
      * Eventually decided to oust the CORRUPT and bad administration of Quirino (Liberal party member) that, in his opinion, had caused the rise of the communist guerrillas.
He transferred to Nacionalista Party in 1953 and won the nomination during national convention to become their presidential candidate for the Dec 1953 election.
      Tid Bits:
      1. Quirino started the vote buying practice in 1949, hence called 'dirty election'.
      2. Magsaysay started the practice in 1953 election the use of "campaign jingles" - for one of his hobbies was dancing.
