I have been taking acting classes for Tv and film and the casting director was saying how you don't want to separate yourself too much from the character, otherwise you won't be able to connect and it will feel less authentic. While there are still many differences between actors and the characters they play, they can always find similar personality traits and experiences to relate to the character!
