    04:09 - The big reason why you’re losing your sticks
    08:30 - Option #1 for fixing - “The index shift”
    10:36 - Option #2 for fixing - “The pressure change” (AVOID THUMB CRAMPING!)
    16:16 - Your step-by-step solution (ACTION STEPS)
    For so many of us as we start getting louder and faster, our sticks slide out of control. We either lose them entirely, or we cramp up trying to squeeze down on them to make sure they don’t fall out of our hands.
    Today I’ll teach you exactly how to adjust the amount of pressure you use at your fulcrum so that you can keep control without stiffening up your hands. This is a HUGE win when it comes to playing any fast rock song. YOU CAN DO THIS!

    One thing that I do, is to wrap tape at the end of the stick. I wrap it a few times so that its easy to feel. The tape is a touch signal that the stick is sliding and I can grip onto it tighter at that point until i can climb back up the stick.

    Stephen, you make really good observations about these mechanics and teach them in an accessible way. As for the thumb cramping and allowing the stick to move higher on your finger to relax the thumb: I'm an engineer, not a doctor, and I think there's a mechanical reason that's not really related to the thumb angle per se. When you're moving fast and /or hard, the stick WANTS to sit higher up under your finger. Trying to keep it down toward the tip is fighting physics and requires a lot of work from your thumb. Letting it go where it wants to go allows you to relax.

    Not an engineer or physiologist (college-level mechanical physics is the most even slightly related to this topic that I have studied formally), so take this with the appropriate grain of salt, but I would think that moving the stick up closer to the inside of your hand (method 2) works as a way to put more pressure because the closer you apply force to the fulcrum of a rotation, the more torque that is exerted, no? (Similar to your molars, they are able to exert more torque because they are much closer to the hinge of your jaw, or how nutcrackers work by putting the nut right up in the nook of the hinge)

    Drummers can of course have a range of dynamics and play somewhat softer or harder. But essentially I think you’re either a hard or a soft hitter. Drums are an emotional extension of yourself, and I question how much your expression actually can be changed through “forced practice”. I think it’s deeper than that. Well, that’s my 2 cents, what do you think?

    • @DrummClem
      @DrummClem Před 2 lety +3

      I think it is more about control. Of course, we have preferences, but it is important to know how to transition from soft to heavy hits, depending on the context.
      I've always been categorize as a heavy hitter, but I am now able to modulate these hits.

    • @flowerlandofjohn
      @flowerlandofjohn Před 2 lety

      @@DrummClem: Well, being a “hard hitter” myself I will certainly agree that control and technique is important and abled to be developed. But I’m not as sure that one can learn “the expression of assertive hard hitting drums a la Dave Grohl”. It’s that part I question. I don’t think it’s a matter of practice, but rather an “natural expression” of emotion. But of course, regardless of “your expression” you should develop your technique, but I think it comes naturally if you follow “your expression”. Generally I think it’s easier to practice softer strokes as an assertive hard hitter then the other way around.
      I’ve never “practiced my grip”, but my hands and body developed accordingly to what I want to express (and with that said not saying that that’s the way it has to be), but my experience of musicians the last 30 years have lead me to that conclusion. You either are or you’re not. And if you try to play what’s not natural it will clearly come across …
      With this topic raised I checked my last upload, I’m not playing over the top hard, but it’s certainly hard and assertive, but if you look at my hands it looks like I’m hardly holding on to the sticks: czcams.com/users/shortsmIC7B2im5Uw?feature=share
      However, I’m no expert, but wanted to raise the question/discussion 😅

    Fyi, another solution for the dry hands thing. I'm diabetic and it makes your skin dry and waxy. It's a big problem. Another diabetic drummer told me about 'vegetable glycerin' . It's basically a very fine vegetable oil. Just a drop or so rubbed between the hands really helps a lot. It's used in food production and cosmetics. Water soluable so if you use a little too much you can water it down or a bit more water will remove it entirely. Experiment just a little to find the right amount. It really helped me.

    Might be a little bit too advanced for some people, but try looking up French Grip... save on your wrists and work on your fingers. Namely after the fulcrum, middle finger and ring finger.

    Just starting to learn the drums in the last month or so, these videos are all super helpful. The problem I have with the suggested grip is I feel like I have to put a lot of pressure on the fulcrum or the stick slides out of the fulcrm travels up my finger towards the base leaving me pressing my thumb against my finger. Not sure if my hands aren't sticky enough or I'm misunderstood something fundamental about how I should be holding it.

    I had gotten into music a bit late. Got my first guitar at 18 while going to school in Seattle but didn’t really start practicing until I was 21. I had several guitars and wanted to play metal stuff. I bought a big 4x12 cab and a head for it and a decent drum set. I went to Iraq for 19 months and when I got home that stuff was gone. I asked my family what happened and my little brother finally admitted he sold it on Craigslist so he could by energy drinks, Xbox games, junk food, and pot. I was beyond angry and very upset especially about my amp because I loved it and worked hard to save the money for it. Never got any money back or an apology. My step mom actually laughed about it! It’s her son.

      This is the right thing to do; try and try different techniques to know what works for you. It took me 30 years to stop thinking about my grip. Not even calluses anymore. I've never seen someone explaining my technique so please do your own things and don't rely so much on others. You're searching 2 things: always getting better and not hurting yourself. If you're not improving and if you're hurting, change your technique.

    Steve Clark, my name is Joe and I am 32 almost 33 years old. I am a self taught drummer. I have been teaching myself how to play the drums since back in 2003. When started teaching myself in 2003/2004 I started with just a snare drum and trying to play with songs on the radio and by watching videos of bands playing live and watching the drummers, then in the end of 2004/ beginning of 2005 I got my first drum kit and did those techniques on my drum kit.
    I have issues playing fast cause of my wrists getting tighter, and I have issues with my drum sticks slides off my fingers. How can I try to get both my wrists to loosen up to play faster and clear files around the drum kit?

    • @DrummClem
      @DrummClem Před 2 lety

      I've been there. I have roughly the same background as you do : self taught, starting around the same time. (a bit older tho)
      I'm still locking up some joints sometimes, but with practice, I'm relaxing more and more. And with practice and time, I am becoming less and less tense.
      Regarding speed, look around to what extreme metal drummers do, and try to use both wrist and fingers. I am not mastering this thing, but I am getting better, and I really witness an improvement... but it takes time.
