Paraphrasing here, but being comfortable with the space in between the noted you are playing, hit me right in the chest! Feel like I have 4 or 5 fills that get used all the time. Great video!
I'm not even on my kit watching this and I'm learning some seriously fresh stuff.
Keep it up, Stephen! We really appreciate all your insight!
Big hugs, dude.
Thanks the lesson... I’m an old dog learning maybe not new tricks but new pathways to more enjoyable playing. I also really learned alot on your series on hand techniques. Again, excellent lesson.👍

Great video,Stephen. Love the use of melody as a teaching method to create fills. That kit is singing, man.
Excellent breakdown Stephen, as always.

Easy to digest and full of gems. Just starting out and found this very helpful. Thanks dude 👍🏻
Great Video, great ideas! I particularly like the moving the fills a 16th, a subtle change but has that Funk Fever 👍✌️🥁
Brilliant video 👌

Great video!
Dude..THANK YOU
Thank you for this great idea , Godbless......
helped me thank you
Thanks a lot !!!
Thanks bro!!!
Thanks.
Again, a very nice and informative video. I have just one hint for you: Keep an eye on playing the strokes right after the accents/toms evenly loud compared to the other not accented singles and your hihat kind of moved from 2 and 4 to 1 and 3 at a certain point. :)
Keep on grooving.
Thank you for this informative lesson. Could you take couple of songs to show us how to listen and create fills based on its melody?
Great lesson. A lot of the examples reminded me of Nick Mason from Pink Floyd.
Sometimes I even do a reverse Tom roll, 16ths starting on the Flr and moving upscale ending with snare the 16th beat of the bar
I've been having a hard time imagining drum notes? Tunes? as a beginner, thanks a lot :)
Fills ALWAYS are determined by the song and what the other instruments are doing.
Yeah I just found this out. I wrote a few fills, refined them by using drum MIDI, practiced them over and over. They sounded great when it was just me on the kit.
But man they sounded awful when I was playing to music. They were way too overwrought, and even distracting. They even felt bad to play, once I had the music going, they didn't lock in all at.
Rookie mistake!
Do you use sinlge ply ambassador on SNARE batter ? Just wondering 👍what u like on snare ..i just changed up to remp amb batter on snare , but normally run dual ply..seems like i could get just as much sensitivity with the 2ply uv2 evans ..whats your take on snare batter thickness..?? Thanks 👍😀
Get rid of your week hand in 3 steps:
Step one. Hold large blade in stong hand
Step two. Place weak hand across snare
Step three. Rimshot
What do you use for ear protection?
I'm not a beginner, but I am still fairly new to drumming. What can I do to remember what note I'm on? Also, left handed drummer!
Sometimes the fear + energy takes over and i just create the nicest fills
Another simple hack that I use when trying to think outside the box is to think of a fill that is literally never been used by any drummer ever. Of course it has to make sense in the context of the song but this will really force you to focus on different stickings, Dynamics etc.
Ba du ka baba du du ka
I love drummer speak :)
Sometimes you can mirror the guitar riff on a song which helps you create new fill melodies. If you know what I mean.
Love your videos! You Need a teleprompter!
Pat Boone Debbie Ba Boo Boo Ba Boon! Good lesson mister!
* needs creativity
* gives them a formula
😂
Man. I haven't hit my floor tom in weeks. I play almost everyday. I use it like an endtable.
I would like to a student
I just am confused about how to count. I mean I know the 1+&ah bit.
I hate playing fills, I only play them because I feel like "duh, they are gonna think I don't know how to play them"
but I HATE THEM
STOP FILLS, PLAY LONGER BEATS
A drummer's diet should always be chops and beats. Best thing to eat before practice.
Nice lesson, but background music while talking is too loud.
I only know Pat Boone Debbie Boone... yes, I suck.
I still fill I’m not creative....
Good video.. JUST TO LONG
Bro! Get to the point quicker 3:00 in and you are still selling stuff! and also quite giving people poor advice! Same boring fills? Simple fills just work and have for decades. Variations sure, dynamics sure, but you have clearly fell victim to the “CZcamsr” thing! Anyone watching this needs to be aware! Listening and using simple fills to compliment the MUSIC is “ALL THAT MATTERS!” Unless you are a “CZcamsr” keeping viewers for add sense.
Maybe he meant 'boring' in the sense of playing them over and over again, some variation doesn't hurt and it keeps drumming fun to do.
Man I looked at your channel and it looks like you have a lot of nerve after i saw you screaming and acting weird? on your channel. I am happy to skip few minutes and really get some useful tips than not getting any except how to sit on your a or hold the stick. Even kid would be offened by that :D
